The Roomba Combo 10 Max Robot + AutoWash Dock is the Roomba that was described as “almost entirely hands-free” when iRobot announced it in July 2024. It vacuums, mops, empties its debris, refills its mop reservoir, washes and dries the mop pad, and cleans the dock. But owners still handle water, replace the debris bag, and periodically clean the robot and dock. And as of August 18, 2026, it is no longer iRobot’s newest Roomba.
What the AutoWash Dock does
The dock is the main reason the Combo 10 Max needs less day-to-day attention than a basic robot vacuum or mop. After a cleaning run, the robot returns to the dock, which empties the vacuum debris into a disposable bag and refills the robot’s mopping reservoir. The robot positions its mop pad for washing; the dock scrubs it, collects the dirty water, dries the pad, and runs a self-cleaning cycle. iRobot says the dock pumps clean water through itself twice after washing the pad.
The robot can vacuum, mop, or do both in a cleaning routine. It does not make every floor mess suitable for automation: sticky spills, heavy grease, large wet messes, loose cords, and clutter may still need a person to intervene.

What still needs your attention
“Self-cleaning” describes specific dock functions, not a robot that can be ignored indefinitely. You still need to supply clean water, dispose of dirty water, and keep moving parts and sensors clear. IEEE Spectrum’s reported use case put water handling at about once a week with frequent mopping and bag replacement at roughly every two months. Those are estimates, not fixed service intervals; household size, pets, cleaning frequency, and debris all affect them.

Hair and debris can also collect around the robot and the dock’s washing area. The robot may need help if it encounters a jam, stuck wheel, tangled cord, blocked ramp, or failed docking attempt. Periodically turning it over to inspect and clean its internals remains part of ownership, as IEEE Spectrum noted.

How its cleaning and navigation features work
The Combo 10 Max combines an edge brush, dual rubber brushes, suction, and a mop in a four-stage cleaning system. iRobot says the rubber brushes are designed to reduce pet-hair tangles. Its retractable mop lifts away from carpet to help keep it dry, though that is not a guarantee for every carpet, transition, or floor plan.
- SmartScrub: Optional back-and-forth mopping with downward pressure. iRobot claims it scrubs twice as deeply as its standard vacuum-and-mop mode on coffee and grime.
- Dirt Detect and Dirt Detective: Dirt detection can prompt extra passes, while Dirt Detective uses cleaning history and detected dirt to prioritize rooms.
- Object recognition: PrecisionVision navigation uses a front-facing camera and sensors to recognize and avoid items such as cords, shoes, socks, toys, pet bowls, stairs, and pet waste. Avoidance is a capability, not a promise that the robot will handle every object safely.
- Mapping: iRobot claims the robot can make a complete map up to seven times faster than before and identify room types with up to 90% accuracy after one run.
The “twice as deeply,” “up to seven times faster,” and “up to 90%” figures are iRobot’s claims; they should not be read as independent test results. Mapping and room recognition can still be imperfect, and loose objects may require pickup before a run.

The dock is a substantial space commitment
The robot measures 13.3 × 13.3 × 3.4 inches and weighs 11 pounds. The dock measures 15.8 × 20.1 × 17.6 inches and weighs 23 pounds. That is a large appliance rather than a small charging base. IEEE Spectrum observed that it can look like a piece of furniture; its top can be used as a shelf, since access is from the front.
Before buying, check that the dock fits without narrowing a walkway or blocking furniture, and leave a clear approach for the robot’s ramp and docking path. A narrow hallway, shallow closet, or compact apartment may not offer a practical location. Poor clearance or clutter around the dock can also make docking less reliable.

Price, current status, and alternatives
When announced in July 2024, the Combo 10 Max was positioned at about $1,400 in the U.S.; shipping began in August 2024. iRobot’s U.S. product page listed it at $1,399.99 and in stock on August 18, 2026. It remains available, but it is not the newest Roomba in iRobot’s current catalog. Prices and stock are U.S.-specific snapshots and can change.
At that price, the useful comparison is not only how well a robot cleans, but how much recurring floor-care work its dock removes. iRobot’s current lineup includes newer models at lower listed prices. For example, the Max 775 Combo with AutoWash Dock was listed at $999.99, with a roller mop, heated water, mop washing and drying, and automatic debris emptying. The Max 705 Combo with AutoWash Dock was listed at $1,299.99 and adds a PowerSpin Roller Mop, PerfectEdge, PrecisionVision AI, and ClearView Pro LiDAR. The Plus 575 Combo with AutoWash Dock was listed at $799.99; iRobot presents it as a smaller-footprint option. These are comparison points, not proof that one model is better for every home. Check each model’s current configuration, price, and availability before deciding.

For a less expensive step down, iRobot’s catalog showed the Roomba 105 Combo with AutoEmpty Dock at about $299.99. Its dock automates debris disposal, not the full mop-washing and drying routine of an AutoWash Dock. The difference in dock function matters more than the similar-sounding product names.
Consumables add to ownership costs. On August 18, 2026, iRobot’s site showed Combo 10 Max replacement bags at $19.99 for three or $69.99 for 12, a three-pack of high-efficiency filters at $36.99, dual rubber brushes at $39.99, and a replenishment kit at $65.99. Prices, promotions, and compatibility can change, so verify the exact model and dock before ordering.

Camera and privacy considerations
The front-facing camera and sensors help the robot recognize obstacles and dirt, which can reduce the number of times it gets stuck on everyday objects. For some buyers, a camera-equipped cleaner is a privacy trade-off worth considering. iRobot says it protects customer data with encryption. That is the company’s stated position, not an independent privacy audit; review the current app settings and privacy policy if camera use or data handling is a deciding concern.
Who is it for?
The Combo 10 Max is most plausible for households with substantial hard flooring, some carpet, and a strong preference for frequent automated vacuuming and mopping. Pet owners may value scheduled cleaning and the rubber brushes, while busy households may appreciate that the dock takes care of debris disposal and mop-pad washing. The fit is best when there is room for the dock and someone is willing to manage water and occasional maintenance.
It is a poor fit if the home has little space for a large dock, if dirty-water handling is unacceptable, or if you expect a device that never needs attention. It is also not the obvious choice for someone whose main priority is owning iRobot’s newest generation: newer Max-series models are available. Homes with many loose cords, heavy clutter, troublesome floor transitions, or surfaces unsuitable for wet mopping will still require preparation and supervision.
Verdict
The Roomba Combo 10 Max automates much of the repetitive work around vacuuming and mopping, especially the disposal of vacuum debris and care of the mop pad. Its AutoWash Dock is genuinely useful, but the system is better described as mostly hands-off than maintenance-free. The deciding trade-off is whether that reduced daily intervention is worth the premium price, water-tank chores, consumables, and furniture-sized dock—especially now that newer iRobot options are available.
