The Philips Hue doorbell spotted in the company’s app in March 2025 later became a real product: a wired video doorbell listed in the US for $169.99. Matter 1.5, meanwhile, officially added cameras and video-doorbell support in November 2025. But Matter did not wait until version 1.5 to define smoke alarms: the notable later development was the arrival of Matter-over-Thread alarms, including products marketed for Apple Home.
For homeowners, those distinctions matter. A product listing for Apple Home does not guarantee every camera feature or recording option, and smart-home compatibility is no substitute for checking an alarm’s local safety certification and operation.
Three developments, not one launch
The story combines a product leak, a standards update and the arrival of new alarm hardware. They are related by the broader push for smart-home interoperability, but one did not automatically cause the others:

- Matter 1.5: was rumored in 2025 and released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) on November 20, 2025, with camera and video-doorbell support among its additions.
- Matter smoke alarms: the category was already represented in earlier Matter documentation. The change was that manufacturers began offering consumer hardware using Matter over Thread.
What the Hue doorbell leak showed—and what it did not
In March 2025, an updated Philips Hue app exposed the name and imagery of an unannounced Secure video doorbell. That was evidence that a product was in development, not an official specification sheet. It did not establish the final price, release date, power design, video resolution, storage arrangements or the extent of Apple Home or Matter support. An early report’s possible fourth-quarter 2025 release was a forecast, not a confirmed launch date.

The product eventually appeared on Philips Hue’s US site as the Wired Video Doorbell. The leak was real; its early unknowns should not be mistaken for confirmed product details.

These details are from Philips Hue’s US product page; price and availability can change and may differ outside the United States. The installation trade-off is consequential: this is a wired product, not a battery replacement, and buyers should check the transformer rating before ordering. A conventional chime should not be assumed to work.
Apple Home, Matter and HomeKit Secure Video are different claims
Philips listing Apple Home and Matter compatibility does not, by itself, prove that the doorbell exposes every camera control, recording feature or alert in Apple Home. Nor does it establish support for HomeKit Secure Video. Those are distinct questions: what works in the Hue app, what Hue exposes through Matter, what appears in Apple Home, and where recordings are stored or managed.

Hue describes its own security service separately. Its US plans page lists free 24-hour video history, a Basic plan at $39.99 per camera per year for 30-day history, and a Plus plan at $99.99 per year for 60-day history for up to 10 cameras. Plan details and included features can change; Philips manages plans in the Hue app under Settings > Security > Plans. Check the current Hue plan terms and verify the specific Apple Home recording behavior you need before buying.
Matter 1.5: from rumor to camera support
The CSA released Matter 1.5 on November 20, 2025. It added cameras—including a framework for video doorbells—along with closures such as doors, windows and shades, soil sensors, and expanded energy-management capabilities.
For cameras, the specification includes live video and audio, two-way communication, WebRTC-based streaming, multiple streams, pan/tilt/zoom controls, privacy and detection zones, and local or cloud recording options. These are capabilities the standard can support; they are not a guarantee that every Matter camera implements all of them, or that every platform exposes them in the same way.

The CSA’s Matter 1.5.1 update, announced March 31, 2026, refined camera performance and multi-stream delivery, added media and installation flexibility, refined chime and intercom-related device types, and included clarifications and fixes. So the old question of whether Matter might support cameras has an answer: the standard now does. The practical question is what a particular device and controller implement.

Matter documentation predating version 1.5 already included a Smoke CO Alarm device type. The CSA’s Matter 1.3 device library is one reference. The more accurate timeline is that Matter defined a model for smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms before a wider range of consumer products arrived. Matter 1.5’s headline device additions were cameras, closures and other features—not the creation of smoke-alarm support.
That distinction also helps decode “the first Matter smoke detector on HomeKit.” “First” could mean first announced, first offered for preorder, first shipping, first certified, or first in a particular country. It could refer to a smoke-only alarm or a combined smoke-and-CO model. Apple Home compatibility, Matter certification and safety certification are separate claims. Without independent evidence settling each definition and market, treat “first” as an attributed marketing or reporting claim, not a universal fact.

Sensereo MS-1 and MSC-1: what the product claims mean
The MS-1 was presented in 2025 as an early Matter-over-Thread smoke alarm and offered for preorder. Its manual describes a photoelectric smoke alarm that requires a Matter-compatible Thread hub. Sensereo and Nordic have described a dual-battery approach for the MS-1, separating core alarm functions from smart features. The available information does not establish its current stock, price or availability by region.
Sensereo’s later MSC-1 product page describes a Matter-over-Thread combined smoke and carbon-monoxide alarm, lists Apple Home compatibility and claims EN 14604 and EN 50291 certification. The page showed an early-bird price of $69.99 and said a Matter-over-Thread hub is required. Price, shipping statements and availability are time-sensitive; the product page’s claims do not establish universal shipping or approval in every country.
For US buyers in particular, European EN standards should not be presented as equivalent to US approval. Check the exact model and regional SKU for relevant local requirements—such as UL 217 for smoke alarms and UL 2034 for CO alarms where applicable—before treating a smart alarm as suitable for a home. A Matter connection is not a safety certification.

What Apple Home users need for a Matter-over-Thread alarm
- A compatible alarm. Confirm the exact model supports Matter over Thread and is available and appropriately certified for your country.
- Thread coverage. The alarm needs a functioning Thread network and a Thread border router. A Matter controller and a Thread border router are different roles, although one device can provide both.
- Apple Home setup. Apple’s Matter guidance describes adding Matter accessories through Apple Home, typically using a QR code or setup code. Follow the alarm maker’s instructions as well; its app may be needed for registration or firmware updates.
- A home hub for remote features. Apple says a compatible home hub is needed for remote access and automations. Check Apple’s current home-hub requirements and the compatibility of your specific HomePod or Apple TV model and software version.
- Independent alarm operation. Confirm the siren and essential safety behavior work locally without internet, cloud service, Apple Home or Thread. Smart notifications supplement—not replace—the audible alarm.
Once commissioned, Apple Home may show alarm states or notifications, but the available controls, characteristics and alert behavior depend on the device and Apple’s implementation. Do not assume all proprietary diagnostics, low-battery reporting or advanced features will appear in Home.
Choosing between the Hue doorbell and a Matter smoke alarm
Hue Wired Video Doorbell
It is the more natural fit for a household that already uses Hue, has suitable low-voltage wiring and wants doorbell events to work alongside Hue lighting and security products. It is a weaker fit if you need battery power, want to reuse a conventional chime, require local-only recording, or want a camera whose recording experience is centered on Apple Home. Before purchase, verify the transformer, the chime arrangement, the actual Apple Home features in your region and whether Hue’s history limits or subscription terms meet your needs.
Matter-over-Thread smoke alarm
It may appeal to a technically confident smart-home household seeking cross-platform integration. Put certification and local alarm behavior ahead of Apple Home convenience: check the precise regional model, local approval, local audible operation, battery and fault behavior, and whether multiple alarms interconnect in the way your home or local rules require. Matter reporting does not automatically provide code-compliant whole-home alarm interconnection. Also establish whether setup or updates depend on a vendor account and whether you have the required Thread infrastructure.
