Roborock began in Beijing in 2014 as a Xiaomi-backed company, launched its first robot vacuum through the Mi Home ecosystem in 2016, and introduced its own S5-branded robot in 2017. Since then, its development has tracked a broader shift in home robotics: from laser mapping and basic mopping to object recognition, mop-washing docks, and machines designed to handle low furniture and floor thresholds. The latest U.S. lineup, as of August 2026, includes Saros, Qrevo, Q, and remaining S8 models.

Roborock’s origins—and its relationship with Xiaomi

Beijing Roborock Technology Co., Ltd. was founded in July 2014. Xiaomi invested in the company that September, bringing Roborock into Xiaomi’s “ecological chain”: a network of companies whose products could work within Xiaomi’s broader hardware and software ecosystem. That relationship helps explain why Roborock’s first robot vacuum carried Xiaomi and Mi Home branding.

Roborock is best described as a Xiaomi-backed company that developed products for the Xiaomi ecosystem—not simply as a Xiaomi vacuum brand. The two names have been linked, but Roborock went on to build its own products, brand, app, and international business. Its company history traces the transition.

2016: The Mi Home Robot Vacuum

Roborock launched its first robot vacuum, the Mi Home Robotic Vacuum Cleaner, in September 2016. The product was associated with Xiaomi because it was introduced through the Mi Home ecosystem, although it was developed and manufactured by Roborock. Names and availability varied by market, so the Chinese-market product should not be assumed to have been sold everywhere under precisely the same name.

The launch established the company in robot cleaning and gave it an early base of customers. Roborock says the product became China’s bestselling robotic cleaner and that more than two million units had sold by 2018; those are company-reported milestones, not independent market measurements. The 2016 model matters to the history because it shows that Roborock’s story began before its own name appeared on the robot.

2017: The S5 establishes Roborock as a brand

In September 2017, Roborock launched its first robot vacuum under the Roborock name. Roborock’s later corporate filing identifies that model as the S5. According to the company’s history, it raised more than CNY 10 million through crowdfunding in four hours.

The S5 helped define the early Roborock proposition: laser-based mapping, planned routes, scheduled cleaning, room or zone control, and mopping in one robot. Roborock’s corporate filing calls it the world’s first LDS vacuuming-and-mopping robot; that superlative is the company’s claim. LDS, or laser distance sensing, uses a spinning laser sensor to help the robot map rooms and plan routes. S5 variants such as S50 and S55 appeared in different markets and configurations; their suffixes do not necessarily indicate a wholly new generation.

2018–2019: International expansion and more practical mopping

Roborock says it expanded officially into North America and Europe in 2018. A corporate filing reports 143.5% year-over-year unit-sales growth during that period and says cumulative global sales passed five million units in 2019. The expansion meant more than shipping the same robot abroad: localized distribution, retailer availability, and app support helped make Roborock a distinct international brand. Models and app arrangements could still differ between China and other markets.

The S6 was an evolutionary step from the S5, refining navigation, route planning, room segmentation, and scheduling rather than abandoning the mapped-cleaning approach. The transition in software identity was gradual, too. Documentation for at least some S6 devices directed users to Xiaomi Home, evidence that Roborock’s products continued to sit across both ecosystems in some regions. Check the specific model’s support information before assuming which app it uses.

Launched in November 2019, the S5 Max made mopping more controllable with electronic water flow, a larger water tank, and scheduled mopping. It helped move the pitch from “a vacuum that can also drag a damp cloth” toward a robot intended to mop on a routine. But the mop still required human care: owners had to fill the tank, clean the pad, and manage when the mop was attached. That is a different kind of convenience from later docks that wash and dry mop components.

2020: Cameras, obstacle recognition, and multiple maps

The S6 MaxV, launched on April 29, 2020, added dual-camera optical obstacle avoidance and Roborock’s ReactiveAI algorithms. The cameras and computer vision were intended to recognize and avoid some objects; LiDAR remained a separate tool for navigation and mapping. In short, the laser helped the robot understand the layout, while cameras could help distinguish objects in its path.

Camera-based avoidance has limits. Recognition depends on lighting, software, and the object itself; it cannot guarantee that every cable, shoe, toy, or pet-related obstacle will be avoided. A camera-equipped robot may also be the wrong choice for someone uncomfortable with onboard cameras, even if the intended function is obstacle recognition.

In May 2020, Roborock introduced multi-level mapping for the S6 MaxV. Saving maps for more than one floor is useful in a multistorey home, but it does not let a robot climb stairs: an owner may still need to carry it between levels. Whether a dock is available on each floor, and which mapping options work, depends on the model, app, and firmware.

Roborock was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market in February 2020 under stock code 688169, marking a corporate milestone alongside the product changes.

2021: The S7 makes the mop more active

Introduced on January 11, 2021, the S7 combined sonic mopping with VibraRise, a system that lifts the mop when the robot detects carpet under supported conditions. Roborock describes it as the first robot vacuum to combine ultrasonic mopping and mop lifting; that “first” claim is the manufacturer’s. Historically, the important change was not simply adding a mop, but letting the robot alter how it handled the mop as it moved between floor types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lifting is not the same as removing the mop. Lift height is limited, and thick or unusual rugs may still need no-mop zones or another setting. Carpet detection and app behavior also vary by model and software. The original S7 should be distinguished from later S7 versions sold with docks.

In July 2021, Roborock launched its Auto-Empty Dock. The dock reduced how often owners had to empty the robot’s dustbin, shifting part of routine maintenance from the robot to its base. It did not, by itself, wash or dry a mop. Auto-empty systems also bring new considerations: bags or other consumables, dock clearance, noise, and periodic cleaning.

2022: The dock becomes part of the cleaning system

The S7 MaxV Ultra, launched in January 2022, brought together robot and multifunction dock. The dock could empty dust, wash the mop, and refill the robot’s water tank. Roborock described the system as an industry first; that wording is a company claim. The larger historical shift is clear even without the superlative: the dock was becoming an active part of mopping rather than just a place to charge or collect dust.

Automating these tasks can reduce hands-on work, but it adds cost, space, and maintenance. Water tanks, trays, filters, pumps, seals, and dirty-water containers need attention; neglected standing water can smell. A dock that washes a mop does not eliminate upkeep—it changes what needs upkeep.

2022–2024: Qrevo and S8 widen the range

Qrevo developed alongside the S series rather than simply replacing every S model. Roborock’s corporate filing identifies Qrevo as its first robot vacuum with dual spinning mops. The family put substantial emphasis on mopping and multifunction docks; later models added features such as edge mopping, hot-water washing, drying, stronger advertised suction, and more advanced obstacle recognition. There is no single fixed Qrevo specification, so compare the exact model and dock.

The S8 became the next major S-series flagship line. Its dual-roller cleaning approach, mop lifting, and progressively more capable docks continued the series’ focus on navigation, vacuuming, and integrated mopping. S8 Pro Ultra and S8 MaxV Ultra represent higher-automation variants, not a specification shared by every S8. Roborock introduced the S8 MaxV Ultra and S8 Max Ultra at CES 2024, alongside new Qrevo products.

The S8 MaxV Ultra illustrates the mature dock approach: its official U.S. product page lists dust emptying, mop washing and warm-air drying, water refilling, hot-water washing, dirt detection, and corner-to-edge cleaning. Some versions are sold with refill-and-drainage plumbing support; the standard dock should not be assumed to include it. Plumbing adds installation requirements and may be impractical for renters. As with earlier multifunction docks, more automation means more parts and surfaces to keep clean.

2025: Saros Z70 experiments with manipulation

The Saros family signals a newer flagship direction, with greater emphasis on lower-clearance bodies, sensing, anti-tangle systems, and mobility. The Saros Z70, introduced in January 2025, added a foldable five-axis OmniGrip mechanical arm intended to move selected small objects out of the cleaning path. Roborock’s corporate filing describes it as the first mass-produced robot vacuum with a foldable mechanical arm; that description is the company’s claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The arm marks a conceptual change: a robot that tries not only to sense and avoid its surroundings, but also to interact with them. It is not a general-purpose household robot or a promise that the machine will tidy a room. Manipulation is task-specific; an owner should not assume it can safely or reliably move every object, especially irregular, heavy, fragile, or hazardous items.

2026: Saros pursues thresholds and autonomy

At CES 2026, Roborock announced the Saros 20, Saros 20 Sonic, and Qrevo Curv 2 Flow. The Saros 20’s AdaptiLift Chassis 3.0 targets floor transitions, with Roborock claiming passage over a single-layer threshold up to 4.5 cm and a combined threshold arrangement up to 8.5 cm (a 4.5 cm threshold plus an additional 4 cm track). These are stated test conditions, not a guarantee for every threshold, and they do not mean the robot can climb stairs.

Roborock’s figures also vary by source: its CES material lists a 35,000 Pa motor claim for the Saros 20, while its current U.S. store advertises 36,000 Pa. The difference is a reason to cite a precise product page and market when discussing specifications, not to treat suction pressure as a universal measure of cleaning quality. Brush design, navigation, floor type, and software all matter.

The Saros 20 also features StarSight Autonomous System 2.0. The Saros 20 Sonic emphasizes a low-clearance design and VibraRise 5.0 mopping. Roborock’s U.S. listings, checked as of August 2026, include Saros 10, Saros 10R, Saros Z70, Saros 20, and Saros 20 Sonic, alongside Qrevo and Q models and some S8 products. Availability and specifications vary by region; see the official U.S. model listing for the lineup presented there.

Roborock’s model families at a glance

Family Historical role Typical emphasis What to check
Mi Home / Xiaomi-era Roborock’s entry into robot vacuums Xiaomi ecosystem integration and mapped cleaning Regional name, app, and compatibility; do not assume later dock support
S Traditional premium flagship line Mapping, mopping, carpet handling, and advanced docks Suffixes and features vary; S5, S7, and S8 are different generations
Qrevo Parallel line with strong emphasis on mopping automation Dual spinning mops and multifunction docks Navigation, obstacle sensing, mop design, and dock capability differ by model
Q More accessible or simplified family Core vacuuming and selected smart or dock features Not every Q model has mop washing, water refilling, or a full-service dock
Saros Newer flagship direction Low clearance, advanced sensing, manipulation, and threshold mobility More complex capabilities do not make every model a better fit for every home

How the technology changed—and what it means for an older model

  • Navigation: LiDAR mapping enabled structured routes, room selection, and scheduled cleaning. The raised sensor can limit clearance under furniture, and maps may need adjustment after major changes to a room or dock.
  • Obstacle handling: Cameras added another way to recognize objects beyond mapping the room. Recognition is imperfect and can raise privacy concerns.
  • Mopping: Water control and scheduling made early mopping more practical; sonic agitation and mop lifting later made it more active. A mop that lifts remains attached, and no system removes the need to consider rugs and floor types.
  • Dock automation: Emptying, washing, drying, and refilling steadily moved routine work to the base. Each task adds convenience but also space needs, consumables, and maintenance points.
  • Physical adaptation: Low-clearance designs, mechanical manipulation, and threshold-crossing chassis address limits that stronger suction alone cannot solve. Their advertised capabilities are specific, not evidence of human-level housekeeping or stair climbing.

An older Roborock is not automatically obsolete because a newer model advertises higher suction or a more elaborate dock. The S5 can still make sense for basic mapped vacuuming if its condition, app support, and replacement parts suit the owner. An S7 may remain useful in a mixed-floor home if its mop-lifting limits fit the rugs. An S8 may offer a mature automated-cleaning setup without Saros’s newest mobility features. For any used or older model, check battery condition, app compatibility, parts availability, dock compatibility, and the maintenance the specific dock requires.

Choose by household problem, not release order. For routine vacuuming, prioritize reliable mapping and serviceable parts. For pets, consider brush design, obstacle avoidance, and how often the dustbin or bag needs attention. For mixed floors, check mop-lift behavior and rug settings. For frequent mopping, inspect the dock’s washing and drying functions and be realistic about upkeep. For low furniture or thresholds, verify the exact clearance or transition specification. If camera privacy matters, compare models’ sensing systems before buying.

Roborock’s history is a progression from a Xiaomi-ecosystem robot with mapped navigation to a family of machines that increasingly manage their own maintenance and respond to more of the home around them. The defining advances have not been suction figures alone: they have been changes in navigation, mopping, docks, perception, clearance, and mobility.
