For most devices, buy standard low-self-discharge Panasonic eneloop AA batteries. They use 1.2V NiMH chemistry, offer a minimum rated capacity of 1,900 mAh, and are designed for repeated use and storage. Choose IKEA LADDA 1900 mAh when price matters, a higher-capacity Eneloop Pro or LADDA 2450 for demanding equipment, and a reputable 1.5V lithium rechargeable only when a device specifically needs a higher voltage profile.

Best overall: Panasonic eneloop standard AA
Standard Panasonic eneloop is the safest default for remotes, flashlights, game controllers, toys, cameras, portable speakers and jobsite accessories. It is a 1.2V low-self-discharge NiMH cell with a minimum rated capacity of 1,900 mAh. Panasonic lists up to 2,100 reuses under specified test conditions.

Panasonic’s cycle figure is a manufacturer rating based on defined testing; actual life depends on discharge depth, temperature, charger quality and storage.

Best value: IKEA LADDA 1900
IKEA LADDA 1900 is a strong-value 1.2V NiMH alternative. IKEA lists 1,900 mAh, up to 1,000 charges and a U.S. price of $9.99 for four when observed. It is precharged and ready to use.
LADDA is widely regarded as a capable low-self-discharge alternative to eneloop, but official IKEA pages do not establish that every LADDA cell is identical to an eneloop or made by the same supplier. Manufacturing and specifications can change. Its main drawback is availability: the value is less compelling if an IKEA store or reliable local stock is inconvenient.

Best for high-drain devices: Eneloop Pro or LADDA 2450
Use higher-capacity NiMH cells in camera flashes, wireless flash triggers, power-hungry toys, heavily used controllers and other equipment where changing batteries frequently is disruptive.

IKEA says the 2450 mAh LADDA provides approximately 30% more operating time than its 1900 mAh model, but rates it for half as many charges. That trade-off makes it sensible for frequent high-current use, not automatically better for a remote or emergency flashlight. A photographer may reasonably prefer Eneloop Pro for flash recycle performance; a household usually gets better long-term value from standard cells.

Are 1.5V lithium rechargeables better?
Not universally. A 1.5V lithium rechargeable AA normally combines a lithium cell with electronics that maintain a steadier output voltage. This can help devices that show an early low-battery warning or shut down because they dislike the normal 1.2V NiMH voltage curve.
They are a separate product category: use only a charger designed for that battery system, check the device manual, and do not compare their printed mAh directly with NiMH mAh. Built-in charging circuits, simple battery testers and devices that prohibit lithium cells can behave unexpectedly. For ordinary AA replacement, low-self-discharge NiMH remains the more universal choice.

The charger matters as much as the battery
Buy a smart NiMH charger with individual charging slots, automatic termination, temperature or overcharge protection, and the ability to charge one, two, three or four cells. The Panasonic BQ-CC87 individually controls up to four AA or AAA Eneloop cells. IKEA’s STENKOL charges one to four AA or AAA batteries and switches off automatically when charging is complete.
- Confirm that the cells are rechargeable NiMH before inserting them.
- Never charge alkaline, lithium-primary or other non-rechargeable batteries in a NiMH charger.
- Follow polarity markings and the charger’s instructions.
- Avoid paired-only chargers when you use odd numbers of cells or maintain multiple sets.
- Stop using any cell that becomes unusually hot, leaks, swells, smells unusual or repeatedly fails to charge.
Capacity, cycle life and cost: what the numbers mean
Capacity is only one part of the decision. Runtime also depends on current draw, cutoff voltage, temperature, age, cell matching and how the device measures remaining energy. A higher mAh figure generally helps in high-drain equipment, but does not guarantee proportionally longer runtime in every device.

Cycle counts are manufacturer claims under defined procedures. A “cycle” may not mean a complete 100%-to-0% discharge, and figures from different brands are not directly comparable without matching test conditions. As a rough arithmetic comparison using IKEA’s observed prices and stated claims, LADDA 1900 costs about $0.0025 per rated battery-cycle ($9.99 ÷ 4 ÷ 1,000), while LADDA 2450 costs about $0.0096 ($11.99 ÷ 4 ÷ 500). These are not laboratory measurements.
Compatibility and safety rules
- Check the manual when a device forbids rechargeable batteries, contains an internal charging circuit, specifies a voltage, or is safety-critical.
- In devices using cells in series, use matched batteries bought together. Keep each set labeled, charge it together and replace the whole set if one cell fails.
- A low-battery warning can be triggered by NiMH’s voltage curve even when useful energy remains. Actual shutdown indicates a compatibility problem.
- Cold temperatures reduce battery performance; follow the model’s operating and storage limits.
- Do not puncture, dismantle, short-circuit or expose cells to heat or liquid. Recycle depleted rechargeable batteries through an appropriate local program. IKEA’s safety guidance covers these hazards in detail.
What about USB-rechargeable AA batteries?
USB-integrated cells are convenient for occasional use, but they may be longer than a standard AA, require a cable or proprietary electronics, cannot be charged in a normal multi-slot charger, and are not replaceable when their internal cell ages. Choose them only when that convenience outweighs those limitations.
