The safest choice is a residential carbon monoxide (CO) alarm listed to UL 2034, installed on every level and outside sleeping areas, with battery backup or another power arrangement that suits your home. Interconnected alarms are preferable because all units can sound when one detects CO. No alarm replaces proper installation and maintenance of fuel-burning appliances.
“CO alarm” and “CO detector” describe the same essential household safety device; CPSC commonly says alarm, while CDC uses detector. CO is colorless, odorless and poisonous. CDC estimates that more than 400 Americans die each year from unintentional, non-fire CO poisoning, more than 100,000 visit emergency departments and more than 14,000 are hospitalized. What to look for in a carbon monoxide alarm
UL 2034 listing
Choose a residential alarm that is listed to UL 2034. CPSC recommends this standard, and UL Solutions identifies UL 2034 as the standard for single- and multiple-station CO alarms. A listing is a buying criterion, not proof that a particular model was independently tested for this article. Verify the marking on the product and its current documentation.

Power that remains available
Compare battery-only, hardwired, plug-in and hardwired units with battery backup. The right choice depends on your wiring, outlet locations and the likelihood of a power interruption. Check whether batteries are replaceable, sealed for the product’s life or used only as backup.

Single-station or interconnected operation
A single-station alarm sounds only at its own location. Interconnected alarms communicate so that when one sounds, all connected units sound. CPSC says interconnected alarms are best; confirm that every unit in the proposed system is compatible and that the manufacturer’s instructions permit the intended wiring or wireless connection.
Application and combination listings
Buy a CO-only alarm when that is all you need, or a combination smoke/CO alarm when one device is appropriate for both hazards. UL Solutions notes that combination products may carry both UL 217 for smoke alarms and UL 2034 for CO alarms. Do not assume a combination product has either listing without checking its label.

Where to install alarms
- Install alarms on every level of the home.
- Install one outside sleeping areas so it can be heard while occupants sleep.
- Follow the selected device’s instructions for mounting and spacing.
- Do not place an alarm in the kitchen or directly above a fuel-burning appliance.
- Keep it away from heating vents and from locations where furniture or other furnishings could cover it.
These locations come from CPSC guidance. Local building or fire requirements can differ, so check the rules that apply where you live.

Testing, replacement and upkeep
What the test button proves
Press the test button on the schedule stated in the instructions and make sure the alarm sounds. CPSC cautions: “Using a test button tests whether the circuitry is operating correctly, not the accuracy of the sensor.” A successful test therefore does not certify sensor accuracy or detect every failure mode.

When to replace an alarm
Use the manufacturer’s stated replacement age and end-of-life signal. CDC advises replacing a CO detector according to the manufacturer’s instructions or every five years; follow the selected product’s instructions when they specify a different service interval. Replace batteries as directed, and keep vents and openings clear.
Appliance maintenance still matters
CPSC says an alarm is no substitute for proper use and upkeep of fuel-burning appliances. Have the home’s heating and fuel-burning equipment maintained as required, and never rely on a digital display, test button or alarm alone to prevent CO exposure.

Important plug-in detector warning
In a 2026 warning, CPSC said consumers should stop using and dispose of certain KH Alert 4-in-1 plug-in natural-gas and CO detectors. The agency reported 91 reports of those named detectors failing to alert consumers to gas and/or CO leaks. This warning concerns the specified KH Alert products; it is not a finding about every plug-in CO alarm. CPSC again advises buying CO detectors that meet UL 2034. A practical buying process
- Map the home. Count levels and sleeping areas, and note locations of fuel-burning appliances, vents and outlets.
- Set the system type. Decide whether battery-only, plug-in, hardwired or hardwired-with-backup power fits each location.
- Filter for UL 2034. Confirm the listing on the alarm itself and in current manufacturer literature.
- Choose interconnection where feasible. Verify compatibility before mixing models or brands.
- Check service life. Record the replacement age, end-of-life signal and battery requirements.
- Install exactly as instructed. Keep alarms out of kitchens, above fuel-burning appliances, near heating vents and where furnishings can cover them.
- Maintain the whole system. Test circuitry, replace batteries as specified and replace the alarm at the stated end of life.
What “best” means here
There is no evidence in the available material to rank current retail models by detection speed, false-alarm rate or long-term reliability. For a defensible choice, prioritize UL 2034 listing, correct placement, dependable power, compatible interconnection, clear end-of-life signaling and a replacement schedule you can follow. Confirm the product’s current listing, instructions, warning or recall status and any local requirements before purchase.
