The best-supported choice for most household mouse problems is a traditional, mouse-sized snap trap. Set several near signs of activity, with the baited end against a wall, and keep them where children and pets cannot reach them. There is no controlled, current comparison here establishing seven retail models as “best,” so this guide compares seven trap types honestly rather than inventing product rankings or test results.
How to choose a mouse trap
For a home, start with the capture method—not a brand ranking. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends traditional snap traps for reducing rodents around the home and says to choose a trap sized for mice, not rats. The University of Missouri Extension guide to controlling house mice also describes wood-based snap traps as effective. Your practical choice depends on whether you want a single catch or multiple catches, whether you accept a lethal trap, and how you can position and dispose of it safely.
The CDC advises against glue traps and live traps for household rodent control. Some extension and government resources describe those devices as available options; that does not make them equivalent recommendations. The CDC’s position is the clearest household health guidance in the sources cited here.

The Iowa State Extension guide to mouse damage management and University of Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator Training Program material discuss multi-catch traps. Wisconsin’s page says certain automatic traps can hold “up to 15” mice; that is the page’s stated capacity, not a verified capacity for every current product.

Where to put mouse traps
Look for signs first: droppings, gnawing, or routes along walls and behind objects. Set traps on the floor along those routes, near likely movement between shelter and food. Rodents tend to travel beside walls and objects; the CDC recommends placing a baited snap trap with its baited end next to the wall so the trap forms a T with it.
Use multiple traps in active areas rather than relying on one device. Missouri Extension advises not spacing traps more than about 10 feet apart where mice are active. Wisconsin’s training material says no more than 10 feet for mice and notes that 3 feet is preferred in certain environments. These are extension recommendations, not a universal spacing formula or a guarantee of results. Iowa State Extension also suggests setting two traps together with their bait sides facing opposite directions.

What bait to use and how to set a snap trap
The CDC recommends a small amount of bait on the bait pan, giving chunky peanut butter and mutton fat as examples. Missouri Extension lists peanut butter, chocolate candy, dried fruit, or a small piece of bacon secured to the trigger. Use a modest amount and follow the trap maker’s setup instructions; no single bait is established as best for every home.
- Choose the right device: use a mouse-sized snap trap, not a rat-sized one, and read its instructions before setting it.
- Bait the trigger: apply a small amount of bait to the bait pan or secure it to the trigger as the device instructions direct.
- Place it on an active route: put it on the floor by a wall, with the bait end against the wall, near signs of mouse activity.
- Set additional traps: place them at other active locations; in some settings, extension guidance favors close spacing, but do not treat any distance as a guaranteed formula.
- Check traps and handle catches carefully: follow the cleanup steps below and the trap maker’s directions.
Missouri Extension suggests that a baited but unset trap can be left in place until a mouse has taken bait once, then set; this is a source-specific tactic intended to reduce the chance of trap-shy mice, not a guaranteed fix.

Keep traps away from children and pets
Place every trap where children and pets cannot reach it. The EPA gives the same instruction for traps and baits in its options for dealing with rodent infestations. A covered format does not remove the need to follow the device’s instructions and keep it inaccessible. If you use rodenticide bait as a separate control method, follow its product label and EPA safety guidance; poison bait is not interchangeable with a trap.

Trapping addresses mice already inside; exclusion and housekeeping reduce the reasons and routes for them to return. The CDC recommends filling small holes with steel wool and securing it with caulk or spray foam. For larger openings, use durable materials such as metal, cement, or hardware cloth. How to clean up a catch
For droppings, urine, nests, or a dead rodent, CDC guidance says to wear rubber or plastic gloves and wet contaminated material with disinfectant. Leave the disinfectant in place for five minutes or for the time on its label, whichever the label directs. For a dead rodent, CDC instructs readers to bag the animal and used trap, seal the bag, and place it inside a second bag. Contact a pest-control specialist for contamination you cannot reach or clean safely. Follow the CDC’s rodent cleanup instructions for the complete procedure.
