The five shoes in Better Homes & Gardens’ U.S. roundup cannot be identified from the available published evidence, so none of the products named here should be presented as BHG-tested winners. A BHG newsletter excerpt says testers wore gardening shoes “for months,” but it does not name models or report individual results. For choosing footwear in the meantime, match coverage and grip to the work: waterproof, more-closed shoes suit wet or muddy jobs; ventilated clogs are easier to wear in dry conditions but let in dirt.
What is—and isn’t—confirmed about BHG’s five picks
A BHG newsletter excerpt says, “Gardening shoes have to be comfortable, durable, and somewhat easy to clean. Our testers tried out these pairs for months to make sure they live up to our high standards.” The excerpt confirms extended testing in general, but gives no model names, test count, or model-by-model findings. Its original send date is not established. It therefore does not support attributing any particular shoe or result to BHG. Read the BHG newsletter excerpt.
Other published roundups can inform what to compare, but they are not substitutes for BHG’s list. Bob Vila’s guide, updated June 17, 2024, says it tested eight pairs over two months, with 16 active testing hours per pair and five tests; those are Bob Vila’s reported methods, not BHG’s. Its tested-product prices ranged from $25 to $125 at the time of publication, not necessarily current prices. See Bob Vila’s tested gardening-shoe guide.

Wet beds, mud, and cleanup
For persistently wet ground or muddy work, prioritize waterproof construction and enough coverage to keep splashes and debris out. A closed slip-on or ankle boot generally offers more protection than a clog with open ventilation. Easy rinsing also matters when soil is likely to collect on the upper or sole.

Dry-weather jobs and quick trips outside
A ventilated clog can be convenient for short, light jobs because it is easy to put on and allows airflow. The trade-off is that ventilation ports can admit dirt. Bob Vila’s discussion of the Crocs Classic Clog identifies it as a lighter-use option rather than heavy-duty gardening footwear; that classification belongs to Bob Vila, not BHG.
Digging and heavier yard work
For digging or prolonged work on uneven ground, pay closer attention to sole grip, coverage, fit, and how securely the shoe stays on. Not every shoe marketed for gardening suits every surface: Bob Vila notes that its Bogs Digger pick was not intended for hard, compact soil. That is a task-specific qualification, not a general finding about all gardening shoes.

What to compare before buying
- Water protection: Check whether the shoe is described as waterproof or merely water-resistant, and consider whether open ports defeat the protection you need.
- Coverage: Clogs and low slip-ons are easier to take on and off; ankle-height styles can keep more splash and debris out, though added coverage may feel warmer.
- Fit and comfort: Consider width, arch support, cushioning, and comfort while walking, kneeling, or standing for the duration of your usual tasks.
- Traction: Look for a sole suited to wet or uneven ground, and consider whether the tread is practical for the surfaces where you work.
- Cleaning and durability: Think about how readily the material can be rinsed and whether its construction seems suited to repeated exposure to soil and water.
These are comparison criteria, not claims that the unconfirmed BHG five were tested on each measure. Bob Vila’s guide uses criteria including fit, comfort, traction, breathability, durability, and cleaning effort, and its product notes illustrate why task matters as much as a broad “gardening shoe” label.

If you need a pair now, choose by your actual conditions: favor waterproof coverage for wet, muddy work; consider ventilation and easy on/off for short, dry jobs; and check grip and fit for digging or uneven ground. Treat the named alternatives above as other publishers’ recommendations, not as a reconstruction of BHG’s five. Without the original U.S. article’s model list and findings, a reliable five-shoe BHG ranking cannot be given.
