Stainless steel offers a sleek appearance and a wipe-clean face. With either style, place and remove a knife deliberately so its sharp edge does not strike the holder.

Measure the wall and the usable span
The Wusthof is reported as 18 inches long; Epicurious measured the Modern Innovations bar at 15 3/4 inches. A longer strip may provide more room, but the useful capacity depends on knife widths, handle clearance and where the holder can be installed. Measure the intended location and allow room to grasp handles safely.
Weigh upkeep and appearance
Stainless steel suits a modern, easy-to-wipe surface. Wood brings a warmer, furniture-like look and should be cared for according to the maker’s instructions. Do not assume all wood finishes or cleaning directions are interchangeable.

Are magnetic knife strips safe for knives?
They can be used without damaging knives when blades are handled carefully, but a knife that snaps hard onto a strong magnet may chip. Epicurious reports knife maker Bob Kramer advising that the blunt backside of the blade should be the first part to contact the bar and the first part to leave it. - Hold the knife by its handle and approach the strip under control.
- Bring the blunt spine into contact first, rather than striking the sharp edge against the bar.
- To remove it, tilt or roll the knife away so the spine releases first; avoid pulling the cutting edge straight off the magnet.
- Position knives so blades do not collide with each other, the counter or nearby hardware.
Keep exposed blades out of children’s reach. A wall strip makes knives visible and accessible, which is useful for adults but also means the installation location matters.

How to install one without damaging the wall
The right attachment depends on the specific product and the surface: drywall, tile, stone and cabinetry do not take the same fasteners. The Wusthof report lists screws or adhesive mounting, but that does not establish that both methods suit every wall or carry the same load. Use only the supplied or manufacturer-approved method and follow the instructions for anchors, screws and adhesive curing.
- Check the product instructions. Confirm permitted mounting methods, required hardware and any weight or surface restrictions before drilling or applying adhesive.
- Choose a suitable location. Check clearance for handles and for removing knives, and make sure the bar can be mounted into suitable structure or an approved surface.
- Mark and level the mounting points. Use the product’s template or measurements where provided; do not estimate hole spacing.
- Use the correct attachment for the surface. For screw mounting, use appropriate anchors or framing as specified. For adhesive, confirm compatibility with the surface and observe the full curing time before loading the holder.
- Test the installation cautiously. Follow the maker’s directions before hanging knives, then place knives one at a time and check for movement or rotation.
If you rent or cannot verify that an adhesive or fastener is suitable for the wall, check with the property owner or choose a location and mounting method permitted by the lease. Improper mounting can damage a finish or allow a loaded strip to fall.
