Thanko’s Handy Salt Meter was a real kitchen gadget, but it was not a universal detector for salt in any food. It was designed to estimate salt concentration in hot liquids such as soup, broth and sauce—at roughly 60–80°C (140–176°F)—and its reading did not directly tell you how much salt or sodium was in an entire meal.
What the Handy Salt Meter was
Introduced in 2013, the Thanko Handy Salt Meter was a slim, thermometer-like device with a probe at one end and an LED readout. Contemporary reports described it as powered by four LR44 button batteries and intended for hot liquid or semi-liquid foods, including soup, gravy, broth and noodle stock. Its reported measurement range was approximately 0.3% to 2.0% salt concentration, with an operating temperature of about 60–80°C (140–176°F). New Atlas’s 2013 report covered the device and its limits; the reported launch price of about US$19.80 is historical, not a current price.
So the headline claim that it “measures the salt in your food” needs a boundary: it was for a suitable hot liquid sample, not solid foods or an arbitrary whole meal.
How a reading translates into salt per serving
The display represented concentration, not the total salt in the bowl. As a rough calculation, multiply the food’s mass by the displayed percentage:

These examples assume the sample represents the serving and the percentage is interpreted on the same approximate mass basis described in contemporary coverage. A probe reading by itself does not tell you the amount in the entire bowl: you also need a serving weight, and unevenly mixed food can make the sample unrepresentative.

What it could—and could not—test
- Intended use: hot soups, broths, sauces, gravies and similar liquid or semi-liquid foods.
- Not intended for: solid foods such as bread, meat, burgers or snacks, or cold foods outside the stated operating conditions.
- Temperature matters: contemporary reports put its operating range at about 60–80°C. Readings outside that range should not be treated as reliable.
- Range matters: the reported scale ran to about 2%. A result at the upper limit—or a food saltier than the scale can represent—is not a precise measurement above that limit.
Even in a soup or stew, a single probe point may not tell the whole story. Salt can settle unevenly; broth and solids may differ; sauces can separate; and noodles or other ingredients may absorb different amounts. Stirring before sampling can help make a liquid sample more representative, but it cannot turn the meter into a full-meal analysis.
Salt is not the same as sodium
The Handy Salt Meter was described as estimating salt concentration, not as a validated laboratory measurement of sodium ions. Salt usually means sodium chloride; sodium is the nutrient shown on U.S. Nutrition Facts labels. A 1% salt-concentration reading does not mean “1% sodium,” and it should not be copied directly into a sodium-tracking app as though it were a sodium result.

Recipe ingredients, serving size and the food’s full composition all matter when estimating sodium consumed. For packaged food, use its nutrition label. For medical sodium tracking, follow guidance from a clinician or dietitian rather than relying on this gadget.
How dependable was it?
Contemporary reports describe the intended function and operating limits, but the available documentation does not establish independent laboratory accuracy, repeatability, a calibration procedure or an error margin for this specific model. It is best understood as a rough indicator for comparing suitable hot liquids—not a precision instrument or a health verdict.

Complex recipes also raise questions the available product reporting does not answer, including how the meter responds to salt substitutes, fermented ingredients or mineral-rich foods. Do not assume its displayed percentage is a validated measure of every kind of salty ingredient.

Is the Handy Salt Meter still available?
As of August 18, 2026, a current official listing, price, warranty or support status for the original Handy Salt Meter could not be verified. Thanko’s official site remains online, but an active company website does not establish that this particular model is still being made or sold. Treat the roughly US$19.80 figure in 2013 coverage as a launch-era price only, and be cautious about third-party listings that may describe a used or different device.

For a different class of instrument, HORIBA’s pocket-meter range includes salt/sodium-ion and conductivity instruments. Those are not direct substitutes for the inexpensive Thanko gadget: the right instrument depends on whether you need a salt-concentration estimate, sodium-ion measurement or conductivity, and the professional-style meters may be more than a home cook needs.

Because the probe contacts food, clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions if you have an original manual. The available reports do not establish a specific cleaning method, so do not assume the device is waterproof or suitable for a particular cleaning routine.
