How structural height differs from deck height
Structural height measures the bridge structure
In the compiled list’s definition, structural height is the vertical distance from the bridge’s highest part—such as a tower—to the lowest exposed point where a pier, tower or mast emerges from ground or water. It describes the scale of the bridge’s supporting structure.
Deck height measures clearance below the roadway
Deck height is the vertical distance from the roadway to the ground or water beneath the span. It answers a different question: how far above the terrain or water the road runs. A bridge can have a very high deck without having exceptionally tall towers.

Why Huajiang Canyon Bridge is called “highest”
Huajiang Canyon Bridge is often described as the highest bridge because its deck is reported to sit 625 m above the gorge. Wikipedia contributors’ current page, accessed in 2026, gives its two towers as 262 m and places the bridge outside the top 20 by structural height. Its extraordinary clearance over the canyon does not put its towers among the world’s tallest bridge structures.
Why published structural-height figures may differ
Structural height is not always measured between identical endpoints. A source may measure to a tower’s structural top, the main-cable axis or an architectural top; the lower point may be water level, a foundation header or the tower base. Rankings should therefore be compared using the same stated convention where possible.

The Millau Viaduct illustrates the issue. The compiled list gives it a structural height of 336.4 m and a deck height of 277 m. An October 3, 2025 article by Interesting Engineering instead describes its highest pylon as 343 m and its deck as about 270 m. Those figures use different descriptions or measurement endpoints; they should not be combined as though they were identical measurements.
