As of the latest available U.S. IKEA listing, the company’s newest air-quality monitor is ALPSTUGA, not the VINDSTYRKA featured in a 2023 teardown. For $34.99 in the United States, ALPSTUGA combines CO₂, particulate, temperature and humidity sensing with Matter over Thread. A teardown identified a Sensirion SEN63C sensing module inside, alongside a Silicon Labs MG24 controller. That is an intriguing combination at this price—but a respected sensor module does not, by itself, establish the accuracy of the finished device.
Which IKEA sensor is the latest?
The “latest” in the 2023 Hackaday teardown title meant VINDSTYRKA. IKEA’s newer model is ALPSTUGA, the subject of this updated look. The distinction matters: the products measure different things and use different smart-home platforms.
In the U.S., IKEA lists ALPSTUGA as article number 706.093.96 for $34.99. Its display shows CO₂, PM2.5, temperature, humidity and a clock. The unit is about 3½ inches long by 1½ inches wide by 1½ inches high. USB-C cable and power adapter are sold separately. Prices and availability vary by market. IKEA’s U.S. ALPSTUGA listing
ALPSTUGA uses Matter over Thread. For smart-home control, IKEA says a Thread Border Router is required; the listing names Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey, Samsung and IKEA DIRIGERA among compatible ecosystems. Matter support does not guarantee that every controller will display every measurement in the same way.

IKEA’s listing for VINDSTYRKA advertises tVOC, while ALPSTUGA’s listing highlights CO₂ instead. Opening the enclosure: an observed teardown, not a repair procedure
A third-party teardown found no obvious external screws and used the front display area as an entry point. The shell is held by plastic clips. The reported unit opened relatively cleanly, but one of its six clips broke. That is one person’s experience, not an IKEA-approved service method or a guarantee that every production version opens identically. Teardown observations
- Unplug the USB power before opening the case.
- Use a thin plastic spudger at the front display bezel or panel, working gradually around the clips rather than twisting the housing.
- Photograph cable routing before disconnecting anything; the sensor module is connected to the main board by a wire.
- Inspect the board markings and module without touching the optical sensing chamber, fan or air path.
- Reconnect any cables before closing the shell, then check the display, readings and smart-home pairing.
- Make sure the rear air passages are clear after reassembly.
Opening can scratch the display or bezel, break clips, damage a cable or compromise the shell’s fit. It does not establish that parts are consumer-replaceable or that the device is repairable. What the teardown found inside
Sensirion SEN63C sensing module
The central component is a Sensirion SEN63C environmental-sensing module. Sensirion confirms that the module is used in ALPSTUGA and describes it as measuring PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10, temperature, relative humidity and CO₂. IKEA’s consumer-facing listing is narrower: it highlights PM2.5, temperature, humidity and CO₂. The teardown identifies the specific module as SEN63C-SIN-T. It cites typical module specifications of approximately ±(100 ppm + 10% of measured value) for CO₂, ±0.45°C for temperature, ±4.5% RH for relative humidity and ±(5 µg/m³ + 5% of measured value) for PM2.5. These are attributed to the sensor module, not guarantees for the assembled IKEA product. Enclosure airflow, placement, firmware and calibration affect what the complete device reports.
Controller and display electronics
The teardown identifies a Silicon Labs MG24 as the main controller/radio chip. It also reads a Vinka VK16D32 marking on a component believed to serve as the display driver; that role is a probable identification, not a fully documented component analysis. The teardown does not establish a complete pinout or firmware architecture.
The architecture is more than a single CO₂ chip: a multi-parameter sensing module works alongside separate control and display electronics. That is technically notable for a low-cost consumer product, but component identity alone says nothing conclusive about finished-product accuracy.
What the readings can—and cannot—tell you
CO₂ is a ventilation clue, not a complete safety score
CO₂ readings can help you notice when ventilation may be inadequate, particularly as occupancy changes. They do not measure carbon monoxide, radon, formaldehyde, allergens or every other indoor pollutant, and they do not directly measure viral risk. A high reading does not identify the cause: occupancy, room size, ventilation and sensor placement all matter. Keep dedicated smoke, carbon-monoxide and other required safety alarms; this monitor is not a substitute.
The manual cautions that CO₂ readings can be inaccurate under some conditions. Follow its placement and calibration guidance rather than assuming a universal warm-up time from the sensor module alone.

PM2.5 estimates particles, not their chemical identity
Optical particle sensors estimate particle mass from how particles scatter light; they do not identify the chemicals or sources in the air. Cooking, open fireplaces, sprays and polluted outdoor air can raise PM2.5, as IKEA notes in its VINDSTYRKA product information. A spike can be a real event rather than a faulty reading. Conversely, a low reading does not establish that the air is free of gases or other hazards.
IKEA’s ALPSTUGA manual gives 15 µg/m³ as a PM2.5 warning threshold. Treat that as the product manual’s stated threshold, not as a universal health standard. Do not overinterpret small fluctuations, especially near the low end.

Placement and airflow affect usefulness
- Keep the rear intake and outlet unobstructed, as the manual directs.
- Avoid placing the sensor directly beside a stove, purifier outlet, open window or supply vent unless you are deliberately checking that local condition.
- Expect different signals from different events: an air purifier may reduce particles without lowering CO₂, while opening a window may lower CO₂ but bring in outdoor particles.
What independent testing does—and does not—show
South Coast AQMD published field and laboratory evaluations of VINDSTYRKA, identifying its sensor as a Sensirion SEN54. Its field evaluation used an external polling script because VINDSTYRKA has no built-in data logging. Those results concern VINDSTYRKA and its SEN54, not ALPSTUGA and its SEN63C. For ALPSTUGA, the available evidence here establishes the sensor-module identity and component specifications, not an independent accuracy test of the assembled product. A Sensirion module’s pedigree is useful context, but it is not proof that the finished unit performs to module tolerances in every room or placement.
Thread setup and common pairing snags
To use ALPSTUGA as a smart-home device, you need a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router. Pairing to a platform is not the same as confirming that it exposes all the sensor values you want; presentation can differ by controller and firmware.
The manual says pairing mode remains open for 15 minutes after activation and is indicated by a pulsing white LED. If setup fails, check for a Thread Border Router, confirm that your chosen controller supports the relevant Matter endpoints, and retry pairing according to the manual. Do not assume compatibility with IKEA’s discontinued TRÅDFRI gateway: VINDSTYRKA’s instructions explicitly distinguish it from DIRIGERA, while ALPSTUGA is a Matter-over-Thread product. Is ALPSTUGA worth buying or hacking?
ALPSTUGA is compelling if you want a small, always-powered monitor with a display, CO₂ and particle readings, and already have (or plan to add) the Thread smart-home infrastructure. The U.S. price is low for that mix of advertised functions, though the required USB-C cable and adapter are not included. Its display also makes it usable without opening a phone app.
It is a weaker fit if you need battery operation, the VINDSTYRKA’s advertised tVOC reading, proven independent accuracy data for this exact finished model, or a device that works as a standalone modification platform. Opening the case gives access for inspection, but it does not turn the product into an easy-to-repair sensor module.
