SwitchBot devices can now reach Home Assistant in three main ways: directly over Bluetooth, through Matter (using a SwitchBot Hub 2 or Hub 3 for compatible devices, or Wi-Fi for certain products), and through SwitchBot’s cloud for some hub-controlled products. For Apple Home users, Matter can make a compatible device available in both ecosystems, so Home Assistant can complement—not necessarily replace—the Home app. The right route depends on the exact model and whether you value local control, broader device features, or the least extra hardware.
From a 2025 announcement to a broader set of options
The March 2025 news about SwitchBot expanding Home Assistant support was a starting point, not the full picture. On June 26, 2025, Home Assistant welcomed SwitchBot to its Works with Home Assistant program. Home Assistant says participating products are tested for functionality, local operation without a required cloud connection, and long-term support. That certification is meaningful, but it applies to tested device and configuration combinations—not automatically to every SwitchBot product or every feature.
Home Assistant introduced its SwitchBot Matter integration in version 2025.6, and its current integration pages describe a broader range than the original announcement. SwitchBot also documents Bluetooth and cloud routes. Check the live Matter and Bluetooth pages for your exact model before changing a working setup; product support and available controls vary by route.

Bluetooth: local control without a SwitchBot Matter hub
Home Assistant’s SwitchBot Bluetooth integration communicates with compatible devices locally. Depending on the device, it can expose controls, sensor readings, modes, or energy information. The supported range includes products such as Bot, Plug Mini, Relay Switch, sensors, curtains, and locks; consult the live integration page rather than assuming every model has identical support.

Your Home Assistant host needs Bluetooth coverage where the device is installed. If a device is distant, behind a metal enclosure, or separated from the server by several walls, a USB adapter or an ESPHome Bluetooth Proxy placed closer may help. Home Assistant’s Works with Home Assistant testing used a USB Bluetooth adapter and an ESPHome Bluetooth Proxy. A proxy is often a more practical fix for weak coverage than switching to cloud control.
Matter: a local, standardized route
Home Assistant classifies its SwitchBot Matter integration as Local Push: communication and updates are local in the documented Matter setup. There are two relevant arrangements:
- Matter over Bridge: A compatible SwitchBot Hub 2 or Hub 3 bridges supported SwitchBot accessories onto a Matter network.
- Matter over Wi-Fi: Certain SwitchBot products connect directly to Matter over Wi-Fi and do not require a SwitchBot hub.
Matter is useful for sharing supported devices across platforms, but it is not a promise of feature parity. The standardized controls may omit manufacturer-specific settings or actions. Home Assistant notes, for example, that a Hub 2 bridge can expose curtains, locks, and blinds in a documented configuration but not lights. Compare the entities available through Matter with those offered through Bluetooth or cloud before moving automations.

Cloud: useful for products that need a hub or broader access
SwitchBot describes cloud integration for hub-controlled products, including IR appliances and robot vacuums, and says additional products may be added through its API. Cloud access can help when a device is not covered by local Bluetooth or Matter, or when you need access beyond Bluetooth range. It is not equivalent to the documented local Matter path: an internet outage, account-authentication issue, API change, or service interruption can affect control or state updates.
Which devices are listed?
Home Assistant’s current SwitchBot Matter integration page separates devices bridged through a SwitchBot hub from standalone Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices.

The Bluetooth integration has its own device list and capabilities; it is not simply a fallback name for Matter. In particular, Home Assistant notes that the Hub Mini Matter Enabled supports sensor-data retrieval but not device control in that Bluetooth integration context. A device being HomeKit-enabled, Matter-capable, Bluetooth-compatible, or Works with Home Assistant certified are distinct claims. Verify the exact model and route.

SwitchBot’s Home Assistant page names products with the Works with Home Assistant badge, including Lock Ultra, Air Purifier, Air Purifier Table, K20+ Pro, Hub 2, Hub 3, and S20. Because vendor product lists can change or be presented inconsistently, use Home Assistant’s live certified-device directory and integration pages as the practical references.

What HomeKit users gain—and what they do not
The main benefit for an Apple Home household is coexistence. If a SwitchBot device or bridge supports Matter, you may be able to keep using Apple Home for Siri, Apple Watch, scenes, and the familiar Home app while adding the same Matter accessory to Home Assistant for more involved automations, dashboards, and coordination with devices from other brands. SwitchBot says compatible Matter products can connect with Apple Home, Home Assistant, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings, though device types and features vary by platform.
SwitchBot specifically says its Hub 2 can connect certain existing Bluetooth products, such as Curtain, Lock, and Blind Tilt, to a smart-home ecosystem through Matter, potentially avoiding replacement of that hardware. However, a bridge does not expose every attached device or proprietary feature. Nor does a HomeKit label on a product prove it has native Home Assistant support or identical controls in both apps.

Adding a Matter device to one platform also does not mean it will automatically appear in another. Matter multi-admin or a bridge’s sharing process must be supported and completed for the device and controllers involved. Home Assistant is a Matter controller; it is not a general-purpose Matter bridge that turns every Home Assistant entity into an accessory for Apple Home. Keep Apple-specific automations where they work best, and use Home Assistant for the cross-platform logic you want to centralize.
Choosing the right route
- You already own a Hub 2 or Hub 3: Try Matter first for compatible accessories if local, shared access across Apple Home and Home Assistant is the goal. Check the feature list before relying on it for a particular action.
- You have one nearby Bluetooth SwitchBot device: Try Home Assistant’s Bluetooth integration before buying a hub. Add a USB adapter or Bluetooth proxy if coverage is weak.
- You want the most SwitchBot-specific controls: Compare the native Bluetooth and cloud integrations with Matter for your model. Matter’s simplicity can come with fewer controls.
- You need an IR appliance or a hub-controlled product: SwitchBot cloud may be the applicable route. Accept the account and internet dependency, and confirm support for the appliance and desired actions.
- You want a new Matter bridge: Hub 2 and Hub 3 are options, but neither should be purchased on the assumption it exposes every SwitchBot product and function. Check compatibility first. A standalone Matter-over-Wi-Fi product or existing Bluetooth coverage may avoid a hub entirely.
- You are new to Home Assistant: Home Assistant Green is an option if you need the Home Assistant platform itself. It is not necessary merely to connect a SwitchBot device if you already run Home Assistant reliably.
There is no universally best route: Bluetooth may minimize additional cost, Matter offers local interoperability for listed devices, and cloud can cover product classes outside those local paths.

Add a Bluetooth device
- Update Home Assistant and confirm that Bluetooth is available on the host or through a supported USB adapter or proxy.
- Place the SwitchBot device within reliable radio range. If discovery is unreliable, move the radio closer or add an ESPHome Bluetooth Proxy.
- In Home Assistant, open Settings → Devices & services and add the SwitchBot integration or select the discovered device.
- Review the entities created and test the controls and readings you intend to use.
Add a SwitchBot Matter bridge
- Use a Matter-capable Home Assistant setup. Home Assistant’s documented approach recommends Home Assistant OS; do not assume the standard Matter setup works identically in Home Assistant Container.
- In Home Assistant, open Settings → Devices & services and configure the Matter integration if it is not already present.
- In the SwitchBot app, open the compatible Hub 2 or Hub 3 and enable its Matter pairing or sharing mode.
- Use the pairing code provided by SwitchBot to add the bridge as a Matter device in Home Assistant.
- Check which accessories, entities, and actions appeared, then test them before adapting automations.
For a standalone Matter-over-Wi-Fi product, follow the product’s commissioning instructions and add it to the same Matter controller setup; a SwitchBot hub is not required for products Home Assistant lists in this category. App labels and pairing steps can change, so follow the current device instructions if the wording differs.

- Choose the right mode for the job — Use Press Mode for button presses; use Switch Mode for pushing/pulling rocker switches (Switch Mode requires an add-on) — plus scenes and ecosystem automation via the SwitchBot app and API.
Keep Apple Home while adding Home Assistant
If a compatible Matter accessory is already in Apple Home, use its Matter sharing or multi-admin process to add it to Home Assistant rather than assuming it will be discovered automatically. Verify that both platforms still control the accessory and compare their available features. Preserve existing automations until the Home Assistant entities and behavior are tested.
Limitations and troubleshooting
- The accessory pairs but a feature is missing: This is often a Matter device-model limitation or a bridge restriction, not a failed pairing. Check the Home Assistant Matter and SwitchBot device pages, then consider Bluetooth or cloud if that route supports the required feature.
- Matter commissioning fails: Confirm the exact model is Matter-compatible, update device firmware and Home Assistant, put the correct hub or accessory into pairing mode, and check that Home Assistant has a functioning Matter Server. Stale pairing state or network segmentation that blocks local discovery can also interfere. Remove a failed pairing only after noting any existing automations that rely on it.
- Bluetooth discovery or commands are unreliable: Improve radio placement or add a Bluetooth proxy; weak range is a common practical constraint for locks and curtains located far from the Home Assistant server.
- Cloud devices stop responding: Check internet access, SwitchBot account authentication, and service availability. Cloud-mediated control has dependencies that local Matter does not.
- You run Home Assistant Container: The documented Matter approach has a limitation for Container installations; this is not a claim that Bluetooth or cloud integrations cannot be used. Check the relevant integration requirements for your installation.
For locks and other security-sensitive devices, confirm whether Home Assistant exposes an actionable lock/unlock control or status only, and review safeguards on the exact model. Avoid broad or geolocation-only automatic-unlock rules. Test what happens when Home Assistant is offline and retain a physical or manufacturer-app fallback.
Bottom line
SwitchBot is a more credible option for mixed Apple Home and Home Assistant homes than the March 2025 headline alone suggests. Matter can provide a useful local bridge between ecosystems, while Bluetooth and cloud remain relevant for different devices and feature needs. Choose by exact model, connection method, and required controls—not by a general compatibility badge—and keep Apple Home if it remains the better everyday interface.
