To set up a YI Home Camera, install the official YI Home app, connect the camera to power near your router, use a compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, and complete the QR-code pairing process in the app. If the camera does not blink yellow, check its power supply and reset it before trying again.

The exact menus, status lights, storage limits, and features vary between the original YI Home Camera, YI 1080p Home Camera 2, Dome models, and later cameras. Identify the model first, then use the steps below.

What you need before setup

  • The YI camera and micro-USB power cable
  • A suitable USB power adapter and wall outlet
  • An iPhone or Android phone
  • The exact name and password of your home Wi-Fi network
  • A YI account
  • A paper clip or similar tool for the reset button
  • An optional compatible microSD card

For initial pairing, place the camera close to the router. You can move or mount it after confirming that it works.

1. Identify the camera model

“YI Home Camera” can refer to several generations, including the original YI Home Camera, YI 1080p Home Camera 2, Dome cameras, and later YI models. Check the label on the camera, packaging, manual, or existing account before following model-specific instructions.

  • CLOUD STORAGE: YI Cloud offers loop recording with no storage limit, keeping your footage secure even if your camera is stolen or damaged. SD card(sold separately) storage supports only Continuous Video Recording (CVR), lacks Smart AI Detection, and has no cloud backup protection.

This matters because Wi-Fi support, status-light meanings, firmware files, microSD capacity, and available features can differ. Do not install firmware or choose a memory card based only on the word “YI.”

2. Install the official YI Home app

YI’s support instructions direct users to search for “YI Home Camera” in the Apple App Store or Google Play. The current U.S. Apple listing is titled YI Home, is free with in-app purchases, and lists iOS 13 or later as a requirement. Verify the app name and developer before installing it:

Use an email address you can access, complete any verification step, and create a unique password. If other people need access, use the app’s camera-sharing or family-permission features where available rather than giving them your main account password. Menu names may differ by app version, operating system, and region.

3. Prepare a compatible Wi-Fi network

YI’s support material for the original YI Home Camera documents support for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not 5 GHz, with WPA/WPA2 security. Do not automatically apply that limitation to every later YI model, but treat it as the default requirement for the original camera and check the exact model documentation.

Before pairing:

  • Connect your phone to the intended 2.4 GHz network.
  • Keep the camera within a few feet of the router.
  • Avoid guest networks, captive-portal networks, and enterprise Wi-Fi.
  • Temporarily disable a VPN or aggressive network filter if discovery fails.
  • Check that router access control and AP isolation are disabled for setup.
  • Use WPA2 or a compatible WPA/WPA2 mode instead of WPA3-only mode.

Older YI guidance also recommends an SSID using English letters and numbers and warns that special characters in the password may cause problems. Treat this as legacy troubleshooting guidance rather than a universal requirement for every current firmware version.

If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

Many modern routers broadcast both bands under one network name. If pairing repeatedly fails, temporarily separate the bands:

  1. Open the router’s Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Give the 2.4 GHz band a temporary, distinctive name.
  3. Connect your phone to that 2.4 GHz network.
  4. Run YI setup again.
  5. Recombine the bands afterward only if the camera remains connected reliably.

You do not normally need to replace the router. The aim is simply to ensure that the camera receives a compatible network during setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Power on the camera

  1. Place the camera near the router.
  2. Connect the micro-USB cable to the camera.
  3. Connect the other end to a suitable power adapter and wall outlet.
  4. Wait for startup and look for a blinking yellow light.

A blinking yellow light generally means the camera is waiting for setup or connection. The exact light behavior can vary by model and firmware.

If there is no yellow light

Check the power supply before assuming this is a Wi-Fi problem:

  • Push the cable fully into the camera.
  • Try another known-good micro-USB cable.
  • Try another suitable USB power adapter and outlet.
  • Avoid a low-output laptop USB port during initial setup.
  • Remove the microSD card temporarily if the camera behaves abnormally.
  • Allow time for the startup voice prompt or status light.

If the camera still does not enter pairing mode, use a paper clip to press the reset button on the back. Wait for the camera to restart, then look for the yellow blinking light again. Resetting can erase configuration, so do not press it repeatedly without allowing the camera to restart.

See YI’s official setup instructions and YI’s connection troubleshooting for model-specific guidance.

5. Pair the camera in the app

  1. Open the YI Home app and sign in.
  2. Choose the option to add a camera.
  3. Select the closest matching camera model if prompted.
  4. Enter the name and password of the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  5. Let the app generate its QR code.
  6. Turn your phone’s brightness up.
  7. Hold the phone in front of the camera lens at the distance and angle shown by the app.
  8. Keep the phone still while the camera scans the code.
  9. Wait for the success announcement or confirmation.
  10. Name the camera by location, such as “Front Room,” “Office,” or “Workshop.”
  11. Wait for live video to appear.

A successful pairing should add the camera to your account and show live video, a connected status, settings, and recording or alert controls appropriate to the model.

Make QR-code pairing work

If the camera does not recognize the code:

  1. Increase or decrease the distance between the phone and lens.
  2. Raise the phone brightness.
  3. Remove glare from the phone screen.
  4. Hold the phone squarely and keep it still.
  5. Clean the camera lens.
  6. Confirm that the camera is blinking yellow.
  7. Close and reopen the app.
  8. Reset the camera and repeat setup if necessary.

If the app reports success but the camera remains unavailable, restart the camera and router, then reopen the app. QR recognition failure and an incorrect-password message are separate problems and should be diagnosed separately.

6. Configure the camera after pairing

Open the camera’s settings and review the options available for your model. Set its location name, time zone, image quality, microphone, two-way audio, motion alerts, and notification preferences. Avoid assuming that every model supports every advertised feature.

For a camera monitoring a room, office, or construction-related workspace, check the view during both daytime and nighttime conditions. Do not point it directly through glass unless you have tested for reflections and night-vision glare. Keep it away from moisture, heat, direct sunlight, and outdoor exposure unless that exact model is rated for those conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Add and format a microSD card

A microSD card is optional for initial pairing but useful for local recordings. YI’s documented limits include:

Camera Documented card guidance
First-generation YI Home Camera 4–32 GB, FAT32
YI 1080p Home Camera 2 Up to 64 GB, FAT32

YI recommends a Class 10 or faster card. These limits are model-specific and should not be generalized to every later YI camera. Choose a reputable card intended for repeated recording, but verify compatibility with the exact camera first.

  1. Power off the camera.
  2. Insert the card in the correct orientation.
  3. Power the camera back on.
  4. Open the camera settings in the app.
  5. Format the card through the app if prompted.
  6. Record a short clip and check it in playback.

Formatting deletes existing files. YI says recordings can be reviewed by opening the camera and moving through the app’s timeline. If live view works but playback does not, suspect the card, its formatting, capacity, or a model-specific storage limitation.

For the official capacity and playback guidance, see YI’s storage support page.

8. Verify that setup is really complete

Run this checklist before permanently mounting the camera:

  • Live video loads over home Wi-Fi.
  • Live video loads over cellular data if remote access is required.
  • Microphone audio works.
  • Two-way talk works, if supported.
  • Night vision produces a usable image in a dark room.
  • Motion alerts arrive as expected.
  • A short recording appears in playback.
  • The camera reconnects after being unplugged and powered again.
  • The camera remains within reliable Wi-Fi range.
  • The viewing area has no unwanted glare, obstruction, or excessive backlighting.

Local Wi-Fi success does not prove that remote access, notifications, or cloud history will work. Test each feature you intend to use.

9. Mount and position the camera

Once testing is complete, mount the camera securely and check the angle again. A slightly downward angle often gives better room coverage and reduces ceiling glare. Keep the camera where the Wi-Fi signal is reliable, and do not permanently fasten it until you have tested the final position.

For wall-mounting, outdoor use, temperature limits, and exact coverage recommendations, consult the manual for the specific model. YI’s support index contains separate guidance for these subjects.

Common problems and recovery steps

The camera will not connect to 5 GHz

This is expected for the original YI Home Camera, which YI documents as a 2.4 GHz device. Connect the phone and camera setup process to a 2.4 GHz network. For later models, check the exact specifications rather than assuming either band is supported.

The app says the Wi-Fi password is wrong

  • Confirm that the phone is on the intended 2.4 GHz network.
  • Re-enter the password exactly, including capitalization.
  • Check that the router is not in WPA3-only mode.
  • Temporarily make sure the SSID is visible.
  • Avoid guest-network isolation.
  • As a diagnostic, create a temporary 2.4 GHz test network with a simple alphanumeric name and password.

Do not leave a weak test password in place permanently. Older YI firmware may also reject certain special characters, so a temporary simple network can distinguish a compatibility issue from a genuinely incorrect password.

The blue light keeps blinking

YI associates a blinking blue light after pairing with poor network performance or incomplete connectivity. Try these steps in order:

  1. Reboot the router.
  2. Confirm that another device can use the same network.
  3. Move the camera closer to the router.
  4. Remove the microSD card temporarily and reconnect power.
  5. Try another USB cable or power adapter.
  6. Reset and pair the camera again if necessary.

A steady blue light generally indicates a network connection in the documented troubleshooting material. If video still does not load, check internet access, restart the app, and restart the camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live view buffers or will not load

  • Camera offline: check power, Wi-Fi, router configuration, and status lights.
  • Blue light steady but video buffers: check the phone’s internet connection, app session, and available bandwidth.
  • Blue light blinking: treat it as an unstable camera-to-router connection.
  • Live view works but playback does not: check the microSD card, formatting, card failure, or cloud-plan limitations.

Quit and reopen the app, restart the camera, and temporarily remove the microSD card if the problem persists. YI’s official troubleshooting page lists these recovery steps.

The camera belonged to someone else

Ask the previous owner to remove or share the camera from their account. If that is impossible, reset the camera and try pairing it as a new device. Do not assume that a reset always removes server-side ownership or cloud associations. Contact YI support if the camera remains account-bound.

Firmware update or recovery is needed

Use normal firmware updates through the YI Home app when available. For serious failures, YI publishes a manual recovery procedure for certain models and symptoms, including no voice prompt, persistent pairing failure, or a yellow light that remains stuck.

The documented manual procedure for the YI 1080p Home Camera 2 requires a computer with internet access, a card reader, a microSD card, FAT32 formatting, and the correct firmware file for that exact model. A 64 GB card may require a third-party tool to create FAT32. Never install firmware intended for another YI camera. See the official YI Home Camera 2 firmware manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you use microSD storage or YI Cloud?

MicroSD storage avoids a recurring fee and is suitable when you mainly need recordings at home. Its weakness is that footage remains inside the camera: theft, damage, or card failure can remove the recordings.

Cloud storage can preserve event history if the camera or card is lost and may suit remote monitoring or multiple cameras. It also depends on an account, an internet connection, and a subscription. YI’s cloud page has displayed a Standard plan covering up to five cameras with motion-detected history, but web and app-store plan displays and prices can differ by region, plan, platform, and account. Check the price and retention terms shown in the app at checkout rather than relying on an older advertised figure.

Cloud encryption claims should be understood as YI’s product claims, not as an independent security audit. Review cloud settings before enabling paid storage.

Security and privacy checklist

  • Use a unique YI account password.
  • Use strong Wi-Fi credentials and compatible WPA2 or WPA/WPA2 security.
  • Share the camera through app permissions instead of sharing your account password.
  • Install firmware only from official YI channels.
  • Avoid public, shared, or captive-portal Wi-Fi.
  • Review who can view the camera and whether cloud recording is enabled.
  • Unplug or physically cover the camera when privacy is critical.

When replacing the camera makes more sense

For an existing camera, the steps above can often restore basic operation. Replacement may be more practical if the unit requires repeated router compromises, has no reliable firmware path, cannot maintain a connection after cable and power checks, or no longer meets your needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A YI camera may be a poor fit for a new purchase if you require guaranteed 5 GHz support, local-only operation without a vendor account, detailed current security documentation, a particular smart-home integration, or a clearly supported long-term app ecosystem. Those are buying considerations, not proof that every YI model has the same limitations.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
