A useful spring-cleaning checklist has three jobs: remove clutter and wash neglected textiles, control dust with surface-appropriate methods, and find moisture or maintenance problems before they worsen. Work one room or category at a time, clean from higher surfaces downward, and use ordinary cleaning for routine dirt. Disinfect only when there is a specific reason, such as illness in the household.
Before you start
Choose a manageable scope
Pick one room or category and finish its decisions before moving on. Sort items into donate, repair, store and discard groups. This keeps decluttering from becoming a second source of mess.
Gather a small, suitable kit
- Damp cloths
- A vacuum appropriate for floors and upholstery
- A mop for hard floors
- Laundry detergent
- Surface-appropriate cleaner
You do not need a large collection of products. Read every label and warning, ventilate while using indoor cleaning products, never mix cleaners, and keep chemicals away from children and pets. See CDC home-cleaning guidance and EPA indoor-air guidance.

Whole-home spring-cleaning checklist
1. Dust without sending it airborne
Use a damp cloth on settled dust rather than a dry duster that can redistribute it. Work from high surfaces to low ones, including ledges, shelves, trim and other overlooked areas. EPA describes damp dusting as a routine dust-control measure (EPA guidance; EPA spring-cleaning advice).

2. Vacuum floors and upholstery
Vacuum carpets, rugs and fabric-covered furniture, using the attachments suited to each material. Empty or dispose of collected dirt in a way that does not spill it back indoors. A vacuum with a HEPA filter can help keep some vacuumed dust from escaping into the air, but EPA presents this as an option, not a requirement (EPA particulate-matter guidance).
3. Wash household linens
Wash bedding, throws, washable covers, curtains and other household linens according to their care labels. Dry them completely before putting them away; damp textiles can encourage mold.
4. Damp-mop hard floors
Dust and vacuum first, then damp-mop hard floors with a product compatible with the flooring. Excess water can damage some wood, laminate and porous surfaces, so follow the floor and cleaner instructions.

5. Wipe high-touch surfaces as needed
Clean handles, switches, remotes, rails and other frequently touched surfaces when visibly dirty or as your household needs. Routine cleaning is generally enough for most homes. If someone is sick, use the product labeled for the surface and follow the directions.

Clean soil and frequently touched areas
Use a cleaner suited to the countertop, fixture, tile, glass or appliance finish. Clean visibly dirty surfaces before sanitizing or disinfecting. If a disinfectant is warranted, keep the surface visibly wet for the label-stated contact time; wiping it dry too soon can defeat the instruction. Ventilate damp rooms
Run exhaust fans that vent outdoors while showering, bathing or cooking, where available. Ventilation helps manage indoor air and moisture. CDC discusses mold and dampness at its mold-health guidance, and EPA covers biological contaminants and indoor air at this page.

Look for water problems
Inspect under sinks, around tubs and toilets, near windows, behind appliances and along exposed plumbing. Look for leaks, condensation, staining, soft materials or recurring dampness. Repair the water source and dry affected materials; cleaning alone will not prevent mold while moisture remains. EPA’s moisture guide explains the principle at this guide.

Match the method to the material

People with asthma or allergies should leave the area while dusting or vacuuming if possible. They may need more frequent or extensive cleaning; EPA offers related advice in its indoor-air guidance and spring-cleaning advice.
Mold and moisture check
Act quickly after leaks or flooding
Fix leaks, remove standing water and dry wet materials promptly. CDC advises drying a flooded home fully and quickly, within 24–48 hours if possible (CDC mold guidance).

Manage indoor humidity
EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60% if possible, with 30–50% considered ideal. A dehumidifier, air conditioning and effective bathroom or kitchen exhaust can help, but the right solution depends on the moisture source (EPA guidance).
Clean visible mold safely
Do not mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner. Ventilate and follow the product label. People with allergies, immune suppression or underlying lung disease should not take part in mold cleanup, according to CDC. Larger, hidden or complex damage may require professional assessment; do not diagnose the extent from a checklist. CDC’s cleanup instructions are at this page.

CDC does not recommend routine home mold testing to decide what to do. Address visible mold and its moisture source instead (CDC).

Do you need to disinfect everything?

Disinfection is not an automatic seasonal requirement. Never combine products, and ventilate as directed by the label.
What to do about air ducts
Professional duct cleaning is not a routine spring-cleaning task. EPA says to consider it when there is substantial visible mold, pest or vermin infestation, or substantial dust and debris blocking components. If you decide service is necessary, EPA recommends obtaining at least three estimates (EPA duct-cleaning guidance).
