Verdict: The SparkMaker Original is hard to recommend as a practical printer today. It was a remarkably low-cost resin machine when it launched in 2017, but hands-on testing found muddled fine detail, slow real-world prints and frequent failures. Consider one only if it is very cheap, complete and demonstrably working—and you are comfortable troubleshooting an aging resin printer. For dependable miniature or model production, a current entry-level resin printer is usually the better choice.
This review concerns the Original, not the later SparkMaker Mini or FHD. It draws on published testing and the printer’s operating guide; it is not a new hands-on test.
What the SparkMaker Original is
The SparkMaker Original is a compact, LCD-masked UV resin printer introduced through a 2017 Kickstarter campaign. Unlike an FDM printer, which extrudes melted filament, it cures liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer using light shaped by an LCD. Its appeal was accessibility: the launch announcement advertised Kickstarter pricing as low as $99, an early crowdfunding price rather than a present-day value or dependable current offer (2017 launch announcement).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Original uses an uncomplicated offline workflow: prepare a model in compatible slicing software, save the output to an SD card, insert the card and start the job at the printer. That simplicity can suit a beginner, but the minimal controls also mean less feedback and adjustment at the machine. Resin printing still involves supports, exposure tuning, cleanup and post-curing; a one-button start does not remove those steps.

Do not transfer specifications between SparkMaker versions. The Original is reported to have a 720p LCD and a plastic resin tank. The later FHD was a distinct model with a higher-resolution display and a metal tank, while the Mini was another separate machine. Coverage of either successor is not evidence of the Original’s print quality or components (FHD review and model context).
Specifications: what the numbers do—and do not—tell you
| Specification | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Build volume | 98 × 55 × 125 mm | Small; check the exact machine and usable area before planning parts. |
| LCD | 720p | Original-model figure, not the FHD’s display. |
| Claimed XY resolution | 0.1 mm | A nominal specification, not a guarantee of crisp features. |
| Claimed layer thickness | 0.02 mm | A thin layer can improve vertical stepping, but cannot compensate for weak XY detail, poor exposure or failed supports. |
| Reported exposure figure | 8–15 seconds per layer | Not the complete time for a layer cycle or a whole print. |
| Resin | UV-curable photopolymer | Requires safe handling, washing and post-curing. |
| File transfer | SD card | Requires compatible slicing output and a working card-based workflow. |
These figures are reported in an independent hands-on review; they should not be mistaken for a promise of equivalent results. The same review found that fine details remained muddled, despite the attractive nominal resolution figures.
Print quality and speed in practice
The strongest published test suggests a narrow sweet spot. Smooth, simple shapes looked more promising than intricate miniatures: resin can produce smoother surfaces than many basic filament prints, but the Original struggled to preserve small features. For a miniature with faces, textures or fine accessories, the stated 0.1 mm XY figure is not a reliable proxy for useful detail.

- ③【Easy to Post-process】- The surface of standard resin printed works is hard and smooth, and it is easy to color after printing. It is one of the best choices for hand-made printing.
- ④【Low Shrinkage】- During the curing process, the standard resin has a low shrinkage rate, providing accurate size and shape of the printed parts.
- ⑤【High Cost-Effectiveness】- Standard resin provides good performance and durability at a relatively low cost, making it an affordable choice for those with a limited budget.
Speed is another mismatch between headline specifications and actual work. An 8–15-second exposure may describe how long light is applied for a layer under particular settings. Each layer can also involve lifting the platform, separating the cured layer, retracting, settling and any programmed delay. Resin type, color and exposure settings affect the cycle. In the cited review, a figurine under 50 mm tall took about seven hours on balanced settings. That is a single tester’s example, not a universal duration, but it gives a more practical sense of the machine than exposure time alone.
The same reviewer reported frequent failures—most attempted jobs in that experience—and identified semi-cured resin accumulating over the LCD window as a major problem. That is a serious warning, not proof that every unit will fail at that rate: condition, setup, resin and settings vary, and the evidence is not a controlled sample across machines.
Design and usability weaknesses
- Flat top to the build plate: The reviewer observed that resin could pool on the upper surface rather than drain away cleanly.
- Unsecured cover: The UV-resistant cover reportedly lacked positive retention, so a bump could push it down into the build plate.
- Limited build area: At the reported dimensions, larger parts and batches are out of reach.
- Minimal controls: The SD-card and button workflow is simple, but provides little control or diagnostic feedback at the printer.
- Aging ecosystem: Software, profiles, firmware, replacement screens and other parts may be difficult to find. Availability should be checked before buying or committing to a repair.
The first two points are observations from the published review, not claims about every revision or modified unit.

Setup and a sensible first-print workflow
Before loading resin, establish that the specific printer is safe and functional. Old age or unopened packaging does not guarantee a healthy LCD, vat film, power supply or software workflow.
- Inspect the machine. Check the power supply and connector, Z-axis movement, build plate, resin vat and film, LCD window, and cover. Look for cracks, clouding, cured residue, corrosion or signs of leaks.
- Check the optical area and vat. Remove cured debris before adding resin. Do not begin another job with fragments in the vat: they can obstruct printing or be pressed against the LCD.
- Level the platform. Follow the instructions for the exact unit. Poor leveling can prevent the first layers from adhering evenly.
- Prepare the model. Import an STL into SparkStudio or a compatible slicer, orient it, add adequate supports and use a profile meant for the Original. Unsupported sections and suction-heavy orientations can contribute to failures.
- Slice and transfer. Save the printer-compatible output to an SD card. The manual describes importing an STL, slicing it, saving the output to the card and starting from the printer.
- Watch the early layers. Stop and investigate if adhesion or curing looks abnormal. After an interruption, inspect the platform and vat, remove residual material safely and check the LCD before trying again.
- Finish the part. Remove it carefully, wash it using a suitable process for the resin, and fully post-cure it. Filter or store remaining resin as appropriate and leave the vat clean of debris.
The manual describes the button as a combined control. With the printer idle and its indicator green, turning clockwise raises the platform and turning counterclockwise lowers it. Pressing starts a job from the SD card. During a print, a press pauses after the current layer and raises the platform by about 20 mm; pressing again lowers it and resumes. Holding the button when the indicator changes to green stops the job. These are manual instructions and may not match every firmware revision exactly (SparkMaker operating manual).
Resin compatibility: possible, but not plug-and-play
The manual says third-party resin in the approximate 400–410 nm curing range may be used, but requires the user to adjust exposure and other parameters. A matching wavelength alone does not make every resin suitable. Formulation, color, layer height, bottom-layer exposure, optical condition and machine calibration all matter. Clear, highly pigmented, flexible, tough, casting and specialty resins can behave differently from ordinary model resin.

HARZ Labs publishes SparkMaker-specific exposure guidance, with example values varying by resin; common model-resin examples are roughly 10–18 seconds at 50–100 µm, while some dental or casting materials need much longer. Treat those values as starting points for calibration, not guaranteed settings for your bottle or printer (HARZ Labs SparkMaker settings; printer support guidance). The manual also cautions that third-party resin may affect warranty coverage.
Before buying specialty resin, verify its curing wavelength and find a calibration method compatible with the printer and slicer. Also confirm the vat film and LCD are in sound condition: resin compatibility cannot repair degraded optics or damaged hardware.

Failures: what to check and how to recover
A failed print is not just wasted resin. Residue left in the vat can cause another failure or damage the LCD, so inspect the machine before restarting. The manual specifically warns that leftover cured material or adhesive can cause failures and LCD damage (manual troubleshooting guidance).

| Symptom | Checks to make |
|---|---|
| First layers do not stick to the platform | Recheck leveling, bottom exposure and bottom-layer count; inspect whether the plate is clean; confirm the resin and machine profile. Resin temperature or viscosity can also affect adhesion. |
| Part sticks to the vat or fails partway | Inspect the vat for cured debris and cloudy or damaged film; check the LCD window, exposure, supports and model orientation; confirm the platform moves correctly and is not tilted. |
| Flat or incomplete output | Confirm the slicer profile, output format, file integrity, layer height and exposure. A software or firmware mismatch is also possible; community reports of flat prints and missing software are anecdotal, not controlled testing (owner discussion). |
| Sheet or fragments of cured resin in the vat | Do not start another print. Empty and inspect the vat, remove residue carefully, and check the LCD for contamination or damage before refilling. |
For semi-cured resin on or over the LCD, the published tester’s recovery involved emptying the reservoir and carefully peeling away the residue. Uncured resin is hazardous, and scraping or pressing debris against the optical surface can make damage worse. Use appropriate protection, avoid improvised force, and consult the manual before attempting cleanup. If the LCD is cracked, deeply contaminated or no longer curing evenly, price a repair before putting more resin through the machine.
Resin safety and post-processing
The printer’s low historical price does not make resin handling optional. Uncured photopolymer resin can irritate or otherwise harm skin and eyes. Wear suitable nitrile gloves and eye protection, work with adequate ventilation, and keep resin away from food-preparation areas, children and pets. Avoid skin contact and inhaling vapors; follow the resin manufacturer’s safety data and local guidance.
Wash parts and fully post-cure them before ordinary handling. Do not pour uncured resin or contaminated wash liquid down household drains. Treat used gloves, towels, filters and tools as contaminated waste and dispose of them according to local rules. Keep resin away from sunlight and other strong UV sources, and inspect the vat after a failed or interrupted print. These are general photopolymer-resin precautions, not a special property of the SparkMaker.

Buy only if the unit is very cheap, complete and demonstrably functional. There is no defensible universal fair price without a live survey of local used listings. The launch price of as little as $99 is historical context, not a price benchmark. The manufacturer storefront is accessible, but its displayed $99,999 figure is not credible evidence of normal retail availability (manufacturer storefront).
- Ask for a test print or a verified LCD exposure test. A powered-on display alone does not establish that the screen cures evenly.
- Inspect the vat and film for tears, clouding, leaks and cured material. Check whether a compatible replacement can actually be sourced.
- Check the build plate and Z-axis for damage, smooth movement and secure mounting.
- Verify the power supply and connector are present and in good condition.
- Confirm the workflow by locating compatible slicing software or profiles and proving that the SD-card output can be generated.
- Ask about resin age and storage. An unopened old unit may still have aged resin or degraded components.
- Price the repair first. Missing vat parts, LCD, build plate or power supply can turn a cheap machine into a poor-value project.
Do not pay close to the cost of a current entry-level resin printer simply because the SparkMaker was once marketed as an inexpensive breakthrough. Its original ecosystem and parts supply are uncertain, and a repair can cost more in time and components than the machine is worth.
Who should use one now?
- New buyer seeking reliable miniatures: Avoid, unless a particularly inexpensive, tested unit is available and you specifically want to tinker. A modern entry-level LCD/MSLA printer is generally a better route for reliability, current slicer support, parts availability and community help.
- Existing owner: It may still be useful for simple, smooth shapes if its LCD, vat and Z-axis are healthy and you can calibrate resin. Expect a small build area, careful cleanup and some troubleshooting.
- Collector or repair-minded maker: The Original has historical interest as an early low-cost resin-printer effort. Treat it as a restoration or learning project, not an assured production tool.
If comparing it with a current printer, look beyond screen resolution and advertised exposure: check build volume, replacement screen and vat availability, slicer compatibility, regional service, community support, warranty and the full cost of resin, film, PPE, washing and curing equipment. The Original’s compact size and offline simplicity are real conveniences, but they do not outweigh weak detail and reliability concerns for most buyers.
