“Somfy RTS receiver” does not identify one universal part. It can mean a radio receiver built into a motor, a standalone receiver for a compatible wired motor, a specialized receiver for an SDN or IGC control system, or a TaHoma smart-home hub. Identify the motor and control architecture before ordering: an RTS label or matching radio frequency alone does not prove that a receiver is electrically or operationally compatible.
Choose by the system you have
| Your installation | Likely next step |
|---|---|
| The motor is marked RTS and already works with a Somfy RTS remote | Pair a compatible RTS transmitter; an external receiver may be unnecessary. |
| A standard wired motor needs wireless RTS control | Check whether the Somfy Universal Receiver RTS is approved for that motor, voltage, and application. |
| The motors are on an SDN Connect bus | Ask about the RTS Receiver for SDN V2, reference 1871471. |
| The system uses IGC or specialized group/synchronization controls | Check the Synchronization Control RTS Radio Receiver, reference 1810481, against the installed architecture. |
| You want app, scene, schedule, or smart-home control | Consider a compatible TaHoma hub rather than treating it as a simple wired receiver. |
| You cannot identify the motor or controller | Photograph the labels and get the model and receiver reference confirmed before buying. |
Somfy describes RTS (Radio Technology Somfy) as a 433.420 MHz, one-way radio-control technology used with motorized interior and exterior shading. Its RTS overview describes omnidirectional control and a general range of up to 65 feet. Individual products and site conditions differ, however; the Telis 1 RTS Patio, for example, lists 164.05 feet in an open field. Walls, metal enclosures, receiver placement, and interference affect real-world performance, so neither figure is a guaranteed range inside a particular building.
Do you need a separate receiver?
Many Somfy RTS motors contain their own radio receiver. If the motor already responds to a Telis, Situo, Smoove, or other compatible RTS control, the usual task is to add or re-pair a transmitter—not install another receiver. Somfy describes single-channel controls as suitable for one product or group and multi-channel controls as a way to select different products or groups.
A separate receiver is more plausible when a compatible wired motor lacks radio control, or when an existing commercial control system needs an RTS interface. A receiver does not make every motor wireless-compatible: its electrical ratings, motor type, wiring, application, and control architecture all have to match. If a motor already has an integrated receiver, adding another can be unnecessary or unsuitable.

Somfy receiver types compared
Universal Receiver RTS
This is the closest fit when someone means an external receiver to add RTS control to a compatible standard motorized treatment. The Universal Receiver RTS manual documents transmitter and sensor memorization, a local sequence button, and particular wind and sun sensor configurations. Do not assume every part marketed as a universal receiver is interchangeable. Confirm the exact receiver reference, motor voltage and type, treatment, regional electrical requirements, and intended sensor functions with the manual or a Somfy professional.
RTS Receiver for SDN V2 — reference 1871471
This is a bus-system component, not a general-purpose receiver for a standalone awning motor. Somfy positions it for SDN Connect systems, where RTS transmitters can control SDN groups. Its product information lists support for up to five RTS channels, Situo or DecoFlex RTS controls, connection to an SDN bus device port, 11–24 V DC power, and compatibility with Set Pro configuration software. Select it only after confirming that the installation is SDN Connect.
Synchronization Control RTS Radio Receiver — reference 1810481
Somfy describes this professional receiver in relation to IGC systems and group control, including use of RTS interfaces with groups of motors in a standalone SDN system. Its applications include awnings, screens, blinds, draperies, pergolas, and rolling shutters. See the product page and linked instructions. It is not a default replacement for a single residential motor receiver; the installed IGC/SDN architecture determines whether it is appropriate.

TaHoma: a hub, not a basic wired receiver
The current TaHoma switch provides app and smart-home control for compatible RTS and Zigbee products. Somfy lists up to 40 RTS channels and 60 Zigbee products for this model. It can be a better fit for smartphone operation, scenes, schedules, and supported integrations, but adds network and setup dependencies. Compatibility and available features vary by product and integration; Somfy’s Apple Home support, for example, is limited to applicable selected Zigbee motors, not every RTS device. Ethernet-equipped TaHoma switch reference 1871038 is listed separately on its product page.
Identify the system before ordering
- Read the motor label. Record the full model, technology marking, voltage, and any wiring or bus details. Do not infer the control technology from the Somfy name alone.
- Read the receiver/controller label. Record its reference number and take a clear photo. When replacing a failed part, matching the reference is safer than matching only “RTS” or 433 MHz.
- Note what already works. Record the remote model and channel, whether one or several motors respond, and whether a local button operates the motor.
- Identify the control architecture. Determine whether the installation is an integrated RTS motor, a standard wired motor, SDN, IGC, io-homecontrol, Zigbee, or another system. RTS, io, and Zigbee are not interchangeable radio labels.
- Define the job. Decide whether you need local remote control, a wall control, sensor automation, group operation, or app/voice control. These needs may point to different equipment.
- Confirm the match with documentation or a qualified installer. Check power, motor type, number of motors, bus requirements, sensor support, region, and commissioning requirements before purchase.
Pairing a transmitter with the Universal Receiver RTS
The following sequence is for the Universal Receiver workflow in its official manual. It is not a universal procedure for every Somfy RTS motor or receiver.
Rank #2
- Extends the range of the standard Radio Technology Somfy signal
- Plugs into any 120V AC outlet
- Should be placed halfway between control device and motor
- Repeater receives the signal from the remote and re-transmits it to the shade
- Useful in exceptionally large areas or rooms
- Check local operation first. Use the receiver’s sequence button. The documented sequence is UP, STOP, DOWN, STOP. If the motor does not respond locally, remote pairing is unlikely to fix the underlying power, motor, or receiver problem.
- Enter programming mode. Press the receiver programming button for about two seconds, until its LED lights and the motor jogs.
- Memorize the transmitter. Press the programming button on the Telis transmitter or RTS sensor. The manual describes an LED blink and motor jog as confirmation.
- Check direction before normal use. Send DOWN and verify that the treatment moves down or out as intended. UP should move it up or in.
If the motor direction is wrong, stop and have a qualified installer correct the motor wiring or configuration. The manual describes de-energizing the circuit and reversing the motor’s red and black wires for this receiver, but this is mains electrical work—not a casual pairing adjustment. Incorrect direction on an awning can create a hazard, particularly when a wind sensor is involved.
Sensor behavior on the Universal Receiver
The Universal Receiver manual documents specific sensor behavior; these timings should not be applied to other receiver models. In wind-only mode, an Eolis RTS or Eolis WireFree sensor can trigger UP after the wind threshold is exceeded for approximately two seconds. Manual commands are ignored while the high-wind condition persists, and manual control returns about one minute after wind falls below the threshold.
Recommended Free Tools
In sun-and-wind mode, the manual describes a Soliris RTS sensor or an Eolis WireFree/Sunis combination. Above the configured sunlight threshold, a DOWN command occurs after about two minutes if wind is not active. When sunlight falls below the setting, automatic retraction occurs after approximately 15–30 minutes, again assuming no wind condition is active. A sensor override or delay can therefore look like a failed remote or receiver.

The remote indicator works, but the motor does not move
- Check whether the remote is on the intended channel and whether it is paired to this motor.
- If the receiver has a local sequence button, test it. No local response points away from a simple remote-pairing issue.
- Check power and circuit protection without opening energized equipment.
- Look for a sensor or safety condition that may be overriding or delaying commands.
- Observe whether the receiver enters programming mode and whether the motor jogs.
- Confirm the receiver reference and whether the installation is RTS, SDN, IGC, or another system before considering replacement.
The motor jogs during programming but still does not respond as expected
A jog confirms a programming event, but it does not prove the motor is the intended one, the transmitter is on the intended channel, or that the receiver and motor are correctly commissioned. Recheck the memorized channel, pairing confirmation, motor direction, and system architecture. In a bus-based or grouped installation, configuration may be required rather than ordinary remote pairing.
One motor responds when you intended to control a group
Check channel assignment and how the group is configured. A multi-channel remote can address different products or groups, but that does not automatically create a group or enroll every motor. SDN and IGC systems may require professional configuration.
Rank #3
- Extends the range of the standard Radio Technology Somfy signal

- Should be placed halfway between control device and motor
- Repeater receives the signal from the remote and re-transmits it to the shade

Control is intermittent or range is poor
Test from several positions and consider receiver placement, building materials, nearby metal, and interference. Do not assume that a general RTS range figure applies to every transmitter or building. If local receiver controls work consistently but radio control does not, check transmitter battery, channel, pairing, and the exact receiver/transmitter compatibility.
The awning or shade moves the wrong way
Stop using it until corrected. This is a direction/configuration issue, not a weak remote signal. Have a qualified installer verify the motor direction and sensor response before returning an exterior treatment to service.
When a receiver replacement is the wrong fix
If the motor does not run from local controls, the problem may be power, the motor, wiring, a safety state, or another controller component. If the motor already contains RTS, a compatible replacement remote may be all that is needed. If the system uses SDN or IGC, a generic external receiver may not communicate with its bus. If the actual goal is phone control, TaHoma may be more suitable than adding a basic receiver—but only after confirming the product is supported.
Buying and installation checks
- Match the exact reference number where possible; do not substitute on radio frequency alone.
- Verify motor voltage/type, application, required direction and stop functions, sensor needs, and number of motors or channels.
- For SDN/IGC products, confirm the bus architecture and commissioning method with the installer or Somfy dealer.
- Check the product’s regional availability, warranty, and return terms. Somfy’s cited US pages present several specialized receivers and current TaHoma products through professional channels; availability may differ by market.
- Keep low-risk transmitter pairing separate from receiver wiring, mains work, bus installation, and commissioning. Use a qualified electrician or Somfy professional for those tasks.
Somfy’s documentation library and controls catalog are useful starting points, but the motor and receiver references should drive the final selection.
