The most dependable connection depends on what you are trying to do: use the projector’s built-in apps over Wi-Fi, connect a laptop or console with HDMI, cast from Android with Google Cast, mirror an Apple device with AirPlay, or send sound to Bluetooth or wired speakers. HDMI is usually the reliable, low-latency choice; wireless casting is more convenient when the projector and app support the same standard.

Before you start
“Smart projector” is not a universal specification. A model may include Google TV, Android TV, generic Android software, Google Cast, AirPlay, Miracast, or only a manufacturer’s own app. Having Android TV does not automatically mean the projector supports AirPlay, full-screen mirroring or every streaming service.
- Find the projector’s exact model number and keep its remote nearby.
- Have your Wi-Fi name and password ready.
- Check for HDMI, USB, USB-C, 3.5-mm, optical, Ethernet and ARC/eARC ports.
- Identify the source device and its operating system.
- Check whether the projector or attached device says Google TV, Android TV, Google Cast, AirPlay, Miracast or Screen Mirroring.
- Have the correct HDMI cable or device-specific adapter. A USB-C port carries video only when the source supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or another compatible video standard.
Bluetooth is generally for audio accessories and peripherals, not full-quality video. Video normally uses HDMI, Wi-Fi-based Cast, AirPlay, Miracast or a manufacturer app. Do not assume a projector’s USB-A port is a video input; it may be intended for media files, firmware or power.

Menu names differ by brand, firmware and region, but the first-run process is usually similar. Epson’s Google TV and Android TV instructions follow this sequence: connect to Wi-Fi, complete the wizard and optionally sign in to a Google account (Epson Google TV setup; Epson Android TV setup).

- Plug in and turn on the projector.
- Pair the remote if prompted, then choose language and region.
- Select Set up with phone or Set up manually, if offered.
- Choose your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
- Sign in to a Google account if you want account-linked apps, recommendations or Google Assistant. Basic projector operation may not require an account, but particular features can.
- Finish the wizard and install any offered system updates.
- Open a built-in app or the network settings page to confirm that the connection works.
The expected result is a home screen showing the connected network and an app that can reach the internet. App access may still require separate paid subscriptions.
If Wi-Fi setup fails
- Recheck the network name and password.
- Move the projector near the router during setup.
- Try the other available band if your router separates 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
- Restart both the projector and router.
- Avoid guest, hotel, school and workplace networks that require a browser-based sign-in or block device-to-device discovery.
- Use a phone hotspot only as a temporary test; speed and compatibility vary.
- Use HDMI from a laptop or streaming device if the projector cannot complete its smart-platform setup. Google lists hidden SSIDs, distance, isolated networks and captive portals among common setup problems (Google Wi-Fi troubleshooting).
2. Connect a laptop, console or other source with HDMI
For presentations, gaming, protected video and anything that must simply work, HDMI is usually the best starting point.
- Put the source device in sleep mode or turn it off.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the source to the projector’s HDMI input.
- Turn on both devices.
- Press the projector remote’s Source, Input or similarly named button.
- Select the exact port in use, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
On Windows, press Windows + P and choose Duplicate, Extend or Second screen only. On macOS, open System Settings > Displays and choose the projector and display arrangement. Labels can change between operating-system releases.

If the picture is unstable or absent, temporarily lower the source’s resolution or refresh rate to one the projector supports. HDMI avoids wireless discovery problems and normally gives lower gaming latency and more predictable audio than mirroring.
HDMI says “No signal”
- Confirm the selected input matches the physical HDMI port.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends.
- Try a different HDMI cable and another projector port.
- Restart the source and projector.
- Remove an HDMI switch, AV receiver, soundbar or splitter and connect directly.
- Lower resolution or refresh rate.
- Test the source on another display, or test another source on the projector.
Google’s HDMI guidance recommends checking the input, power supply, cable, port and display in this order (HDMI troubleshooting).
3. Cast from Android or Google Cast
Use this path when the projector has Google Cast built in or a compatible Google TV/Android TV receiver. Casting a supported app is different from mirroring the entire phone screen.

- Connect the phone, tablet or computer and projector to the same Wi-Fi network and SSID.
- Open a Cast-enabled app, such as YouTube or another supported service.
- Tap the Cast icon and select the projector’s name.
- Wait for playback to begin. To stop, tap the Cast icon again and choose Disconnect.
Google documents the same-network requirement for Google TV and Cast devices (Google TV casting; Google Cast requirements). In Chrome, you can cast a browser tab or desktop to a compatible receiver (Chrome casting).
Full Android-screen mirroring
Full-screen mirroring may require Google Home, a projector-specific app or a Miracast/wireless-display mode. It is not guaranteed merely because the projector runs Android TV. For example, BenQ documents Google Home casting for supported QS02 configurations (BenQ instructions), while XGIMI’s steps vary by model (XGIMI support).
When the projector is missing from the Cast list
- Make sure the phone is on Wi-Fi rather than cellular data and both devices use the same SSID.
- Disable guest-network or client-isolation settings.
- Enable the projector’s Cast receiver and restart it.
- Update the app, projector firmware and Google Cast components.
- On iOS 14 or later and macOS 15 or later, allow the app Local Network access.
- Check that the app supports casting the specific content; some content supports casting but not mirroring.

4. AirPlay from an iPhone, iPad or Mac
AirPlay works only when the projector has an AirPlay receiver, a compatible receiver app, or an attached device such as Apple TV. An iPhone cannot AirPlay to every projector automatically.
- Put the Apple device and AirPlay receiver on the same Wi-Fi network.
- For a supported video or photo, tap the AirPlay button. For the entire screen, open Control Center > Screen Mirroring.
- Select the projector or attached receiver.
- Enter the on-screen passcode if requested.
- To stop mirroring, return to Screen Mirroring and choose Stop Mirroring.
Apple distinguishes streaming from an app through its AirPlay button from duplicating the entire display (Apple’s AirPlay instructions). Some subscription apps restrict AirPlay or screen mirroring because of content-protection rules. Nebula, for example, notes that certain Android TV projectors need its Nebula Cast app and that protected content may not mirror normally (Nebula guidance).
If AirPlay fails, verify receiver support, same-network status and Local Network permission; then restart the Apple device, projector and router and update their software. If protected video still refuses to play, use the service’s native app, an external streamer or HDMI (Apple troubleshooting).

5. Connect without Wi-Fi
A wired connection is the fallback for unsupported wireless standards, captive-portal networks and unreliable discovery.
- iPhone or iPad with USB-C: use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, then connect HDMI to the projector.
- Older iPhone or iPad: use a Lightning Digital AV adapter and HDMI cable.
- Mac or laptop: use its HDMI output or a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, provided the USB-C port supports video output.
- Prepared streaming device: plug it into HDMI and complete its Wi-Fi setup elsewhere before travel, if necessary.
Some adapters need external power. Plugging a phone into a projector’s USB-A port does not normally display the phone screen; USB video behavior is model-specific.
6. Add speakers or headphones
- Bluetooth: pair headphones or a speaker through the projector’s Bluetooth settings if the model supports Bluetooth audio output. Some projectors support Bluetooth remotes or speakers but not headphones.
- 3.5-mm output: connect powered speakers or a soundbar.
- HDMI ARC/eARC: use the projector’s labeled ARC/eARC port and a compatible soundbar or receiver. Both devices must support the feature.
- Source-device audio: send sound directly from a console, laptop or streaming device when projector audio routing is problematic.
- Optical output: available on some models.
Bluetooth can introduce lip-sync delay, which is especially noticeable in games. Model-specific support differs; BenQ’s compatibility FAQ illustrates why Bluetooth, ARC/eARC and external streaming are separate questions (BenQ audio guidance).
Built-in apps or an external streaming device?
An external Google TV, Apple TV, Fire TV or Roku device can be the better choice when the projector’s software is slow, missing an app, no longer updated, or lacks AirPlay or Cast. Connect the device to HDMI, supply power with its included adapter when possible, select that HDMI input and complete its own Wi-Fi and app setup. XGIMI describes this arrangement as useful for projectors without adequate built-in smart functionality (XGIMI connection guidance).
A streamer does not make every subscription free, and app availability and certification vary by model and region. Native apps on a certified projector or streaming device are generally more reliable for protected services than phone screen mirroring.
Symptom-led troubleshooting

Keep ventilation clear and follow the projector’s manual for cooling and power-down procedures. Do not place a projector on bedding or soft furniture or enclose it tightly.
