Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott transformed their New York City apartment with interior designer Young Huh, combining bold wallpaper, layered fabrics, antiques, custom plaster and concealed technology. The result is maximalist by design: every room has its own mood, but custom architectural work, color and entertaining needs tie the home together.
Who designed the apartment?
Deschanel and Scott worked with designer Young Huh, while Scott also contributed his home-improvement expertise. Architectural Digest’s October 23, 2025 Open Doors roundup describes the property as a maximalist home and specifically highlights the raised foyer ceiling, floral wallpaper, redesigned kitchen and piano.
The Architectural Digest Open Door tour presents the renovation as a combination of permanent construction and collected decoration. Custom millwork, plaster, tile, ironwork and built-in storage establish the architecture; patterned fabrics, antiques, lighting and vintage pieces supply the changing layers.
The foyer makes maximalism architectural
The entry was designed to make an immediate impression. Deschanel says she fell in love with a multicolored printed mural by Ixel, while the tour describes custom crown and plaster details and reproduction lanterns.

Scott says the original foyer ceiling was “less than eight feet originally.” He explains that it was raised, although the tour does not give a final height. Raising the ceiling changed the proportions of the arrival space before wallpaper and lighting added the decorative impact.

A kitchen planned around entertaining
The former kitchen was described as a small, closet-like space. The redesign opens it up as a social hub so the hosts can cook while staying connected to guests. Scott sums up the goal simply: “The kitchen is the heart of the home.”

The tour identifies custom millwork and storage, a stone surface, a dedicated coffee station and panel-ready appliances. Panel-ready fronts keep the appliances visually integrated with the cabinetry rather than making them the room’s focal point.
Deschanel names an ILVE range chosen for its design and says the couple moved from gas to induction. She also praises the appliance design of JennAir. The tour does not identify an exact ILVE range model or offer an independent performance comparison, so those comments describe the couple’s selections and preferences rather than a product test.
Living and family rooms hide the technology
Living room
The living room is intended to be comfortable and used, not formal. Deschanel describes mixing fabrics and patterns, and the room includes a custom rug and colorful furnishings.

A television is concealed in the ceiling because, as Deschanel puts it, “I also don’t like to see a TV in a living room.” The tour also mentions a hidden karaoke setup, allowing the room to support entertainment without leaving equipment permanently visible.

Family room
The family room takes a more built-in approach to comfort. The couple says a fireplace was added against what had been a brick wall, with custom work intended to make the feature look as though it had always belonged there. A second movie screen is concealed in the room, while vintage sconces and antiques keep the technology from dominating the scheme.

The apartment has three private terraces. Deschanel and Scott say the terraces were previously exposed and were substantially improved with custom tile, greenery, ironwork and plantings.

The bedroom shifts from pattern to calm
The primary bedroom is described as peaceful, with blue tones continuing into the bathroom. That cooler palette creates a deliberate contrast with the stronger color and pattern used in the entertaining spaces.
Huh’s collection is credited for the bathroom wall tile. Tall marble-look panels echo the paneling in the bedroom, linking the two rooms through material and vertical rhythm rather than matching every decorative detail.
The tour also briefly mentions a Scott Living mattress. No model information or independent quality assessment is provided.
