Yes—most Samsung TVs can send audio to most modern soundbars. The key is choosing a connection both devices support. HDMI eARC is usually the best option; HDMI ARC is the next choice, with optical as a dependable fallback and Bluetooth mainly for convenience. Samsung-only features such as Q-Symphony require a compatible TV-and-soundbar combination, so basic audio working does not guarantee every advertised feature will work.
What “compatible” means
Compatibility is not a single yes-or-no test. It has several layers:
- Connection: The TV and soundbar need a shared connection, such as HDMI ARC/eARC or optical. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi work only when supported by the particular devices.
- Audio format: The TV, soundbar, content, source device, cable and settings all affect whether you get stereo, surround sound or Dolby Atmos.
- Control: HDMI-CEC can let the TV remote control soundbar volume and power. Samsung calls its implementation Anynet+.
- Special features: Q-Symphony, wireless Dolby Atmos and some app or calibration features require particular Samsung products and may depend on model year, region and connection method.
A third-party soundbar can usually play TV audio through a compatible connection without offering Samsung-specific functions. Samsung’s soundbar setup guide describes HDMI eARC, HDMI ARC, optical, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection options.

This is a general guide, not a compatibility guarantee. Check the documentation for your exact TV and soundbar models, especially if Atmos or Q-Symphony is important.

Which connection should you use?
1. HDMI eARC: the best starting point
If both devices have eARC, connect the TV’s HDMI port labelled eARC or ARC to the soundbar port labelled HDMI OUT, TV-ARC or TV-eARC/ARC. Do not use an ordinary TV HDMI input: it will not return audio to the soundbar.
eARC offers more bandwidth than ARC and is generally the safest choice for broad modern audio-format support, including Atmos setups. It also supports HDMI-CEC control on compatible devices. It cannot guarantee Atmos by itself: the source, TV settings, HDMI chain and soundbar must all support the format.
Use a soundbar-supplied or reliable, correctly rated High Speed HDMI cable. A damaged or marginal cable can cause dropouts, handshake trouble or loss of eARC features; an expensive cable does not automatically improve sound.

2. HDMI ARC: a good alternative
Use ARC if one device lacks eARC. It is suitable for everyday TV audio and many surround formats. Its format capabilities depend on the TV, source and soundbar, so do not assume every Atmos signal will pass through every ARC setup. eARC is the safer choice when maximum format compatibility matters.

3. Optical: a straightforward fallback
Optical is useful with older TVs, for a simple installation, or when ARC/eARC is misbehaving. Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input, remove any protective caps, then select Optical, D.IN or the equivalent input on the soundbar. Set the TV’s sound output to optical or receiver/optical.
Optical generally offers fewer audio-format options than eARC and usually does not provide HDMI-CEC volume and power control. It is a useful diagnostic connection, but not the preferred route for maximizing modern home-theater formats.
4. Bluetooth: convenient, with trade-offs
Bluetooth can avoid a cable for casual or temporary listening. On many Samsung TVs, open Home/Menu → Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output → Bluetooth Speaker List, then choose the soundbar. Labels vary by model year, software and region.

5. Wi-Fi: for supported Samsung setups
Wi-Fi can be useful for compatible Samsung TV-and-audio combinations, including supported Q-Symphony configurations. It may require both devices to be on the same network and setup through SmartThings or the current Samsung audio app, depending on product generation. Model support, app setup and network conditions matter. Samsung’s Q-Symphony guidance describes supported Wi-Fi operation; Samsung also warns that some screen-sharing functions can interrupt Wi-Fi audio in its support guidance.
Q-Symphony: a model-specific Samsung feature
Q-Symphony lets compatible Samsung TV speakers and a compatible Samsung soundbar play together. It is not a general soundbar standard, does not automatically turn the soundbar into a rear-speaker system, and is not guaranteed just because both products are Samsung or one is a Q-Series bar. Check the precise TV and soundbar model numbers, region and supported connection method.
Samsung notes that some older sound devices used with 2026 products may operate in a legacy compatibility mode with limited performance. The menu name and available behavior can vary by generation. On some 2024 TVs, for example, Samsung provides a dedicated Q-Symphony setup flow; newer menus may differ. See Samsung’s 2024 setup instructions and its current feature guidance.
The result depends on the room, seating position, TV speakers, soundbar design and calibration. If the combined sound is distracting or out of sync, disable Q-Symphony and compare with soundbar-only output.

Check your exact TV and soundbar before buying
- Record the full model number for both products, including regional suffixes where shown.
- Check the TV’s ports and the soundbar’s connection options. Confirm that the TV has an ARC/eARC port if you plan to use HDMI return audio.
- Check model-specific support for the feature you care about: Atmos, Q-Symphony, Wi-Fi, app control, or compatible rear speakers.
- Confirm the intended source path. Built-in TV apps and external HDMI devices can have different audio-format limits.
- Check dimensions and placement. A bar can obstruct the TV’s IR sensor or sit awkwardly on a stand; rear speakers need suitable placement and power outlets.
- Confirm local availability, included accessories and warranty. Samsung model suffixes and product bundles vary by region.
Set up HDMI eARC step by step
- Find the TV model number in its About/Support menu or on the rear label, then check which audio ports it has.
- Connect the correct ports: TV HDMI ARC/eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV-ARC/eARC port, using one HDMI cable.
- Select the soundbar on the TV: On many Samsung TVs, go to Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output and choose the HDMI receiver or soundbar option.
- Enable Anynet+ if needed. Its location varies, but it is generally under external-device or connection settings. Anynet+ is Samsung’s HDMI-CEC control feature.
- Check digital audio output. Start with Auto or Pass-Through if the connected devices support the format. If there is no sound, temporarily select PCM as a diagnostic.
- Choose the right soundbar input. Depending on the model it may display TV ARC, eARC, HDMI or D.IN.
- Test more than one source: Try a built-in TV app and an external HDMI device, if you use one. Confirm the soundbar plays audio and the TV remote controls volume.
Samsung’s connection instructions cover the ARC/eARC port pairing. Menu names vary by model, software and region.

No model is right for every Samsung TV or room. Choose based on the listening experience and physical setup you want, then verify feature compatibility separately.

Troubleshooting by symptom
No sound from the soundbar
- Make sure the cable uses the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s TV ARC/eARC or HDMI OUT port.
- Set the TV’s Sound Output to the soundbar and the soundbar to the matching source.
- Check volume and mute on both devices; toggle Anynet+/HDMI-CEC off and on if needed.
- Power-cycle the TV and soundbar. Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices to simplify the chain.
- Try PCM output. If ARC/eARC still fails, test optical to see whether the problem is specific to HDMI return audio.
- Try a different reliable HDMI cable and check for firmware updates. Reset the soundbar only after simpler checks, and note its settings first.

The TV still plays through its own speakers
Recheck Sound Output, the soundbar’s selected source and mute state. Disconnect any Bluetooth device that may have taken priority, then restart both products. If using Wi-Fi, verify the network and app setup. If Q-Symphony is active, TV-speaker playback may be intentional.
Q-Symphony is missing or unavailable
Check the exact model pairing and supported connection method. Also check firmware, whether another sound-output mode is active, and any app or account setup the model requires. A Samsung TV may recognize a soundbar as a generic receiver without exposing Samsung-specific features. Family names alone do not prove compatibility.

Confirm that the title and source actually provide Atmos, the TV or external source is set to output a compatible format, and the soundbar supports it on the chosen input. Optical and Bluetooth are not the preferred paths for maximizing modern Atmos compatibility; the HDMI chain may also include an ARC-only device. Check the soundbar display or app information as well as any logo—the logo alone is not a complete diagnosis.
Audio is delayed
Prefer HDMI over Bluetooth, test a built-in TV app separately from external sources, and try the TV’s audio-delay control or soundbar sync adjustment. Temporarily use PCM and turn off unnecessary audio processing. If only one app or device has a delay, focus on that source first.
Wi-Fi audio drops or the remote will not control volume
For Wi-Fi, put both products on the same stable network, avoid guest-network isolation, and re-add devices in the appropriate Samsung app if necessary. Temporarily stop screen mirroring or Smart View. For HDMI remote control, confirm Anynet+/HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV and that the soundbar is connected through ARC/eARC; optical generally does not provide the same HDMI control path.
Bottom line
Most Samsung TVs can work with most soundbars, but the connection and desired features determine how well. Start with HDMI eARC when both devices support it, use ARC if eARC is unavailable, and treat optical as a practical fallback. Before buying for Q-Symphony, Wi-Fi audio or another Samsung-specific feature, verify the exact TV and soundbar models for your region.
