For a permanent Samsung TV setup, use HDMI ARC or eARC whenever both devices support it. It carries audio from built-in TV apps, usually enables Samsung-remote volume control, and is generally more dependable than Bluetooth. Use optical when ARC/eARC is unavailable, Bluetooth when cable-free convenience matters most, and Wi-Fi only when you specifically need compatible SmartThings features. Q-Symphony is a separate, model-specific feature—not a synonym for pairing.
First, identify what “pairing” means
People use pairing to describe several different connections:
- Bluetooth: wireless device discovery between the TV and soundbar.
- HDMI ARC/eARC: a wired digital audio link, not Bluetooth pairing.
- Optical: a wired digital fallback.
- Wi-Fi/SmartThings: network setup and device management.
- Q-Symphony: synchronized playback from compatible Samsung TV speakers and Samsung audio devices.
- Subwoofer/rear speakers: wireless links within the soundbar system, normally paired to the bar rather than directly to the TV.
Before starting, note the exact TV and soundbar model numbers and year. Check for a TV port labeled ARC or eARC, a soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC), Bluetooth-audio support, Wi-Fi/SmartThings support, and Q-Symphony compatibility. Samsung’s compatibility list is model-specific and changes by generation (check the current list).

Choose the connection

Samsung describes HDMI as its best-quality connection guidance, while Bluetooth is the convenience option (Samsung connection guidance). Actual results still depend on the TV, soundbar, source, supported audio format, firmware, and room.

Recommended setup: HDMI eARC or ARC
Connect the ports correctly
- Connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC).
- Do not use an ordinary TV HDMI input or the soundbar’s HDMI IN for this TV-return connection.
- Use a suitable, working HDMI cable. A certified cable appropriate to a high-bandwidth eARC/video setup is sensible; an expensive branded cable is not automatically required.
Set the soundbar and TV
- Turn on both devices.
- Press Source on the bar or remote and select D.IN (the model may then show TV ARC or a similar indication).
- On the TV, open Settings > All Settings > Sound > Sound Output or Speaker Select.
- Select the soundbar, HDMI receiver, or receiver (HDMI) entry.
- If required, enable Anynet+ or HDMI-CEC so power and volume commands can pass between devices.
Menu names vary by region, model year, and firmware. If the label differs, use the model manual’s Sound Output instructions.
eARC is preferable when both devices support it, but it does not guarantee every surround format: Samsung notes that its TVs do not support DTS Master Audio or DTS:X, and codec support remains model-dependent (Samsung eARC notes).
Bluetooth setup
Bluetooth is useful for a temporary installation, a TV without ARC/eARC, or a room where running a cable is impractical. Samsung cautions that it does not provide HDMI’s sound quality.
- Put the soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode. Press Source until Bluetooth appears, then choose BT PAIRING or the equivalent model-specific prompt.
- On the TV, open the Sound Output or speaker-selection menu and choose the Bluetooth speaker/device list.
- Select the soundbar and confirm that output changes from TV Speaker to the Bluetooth device.
The bar must not already be connected to a phone, tablet, or another TV. If it does not appear, turn off nearby devices’ Bluetooth, delete the old TV entry, power-cycle both products, move the bar closer, and search again. Bluetooth can introduce lip-sync delay or reconnect to internal speakers after standby; HDMI is the better permanent choice.

Optical setup
Use optical when the TV lacks ARC/eARC, HDMI-CEC is troublesome, or the soundbar is older.
- Remove protective caps from the optical cable.
- Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input.
- Set the bar to D.IN or optical mode.
- In the TV’s Sound Output menu, select optical/digital audio.
Optical carries audio only and generally offers fewer capabilities than eARC. Samsung documents TV-remote volume and mute control for supported optical and HDMI ARC installations (remote-control guidance).
Wi-Fi and SmartThings
Wi-Fi can add Samsung ecosystem features, but registering a bar in SmartThings does not automatically make it the TV’s active speaker.
- Put the soundbar in Wi-Fi mode using its Source control.
- Open SmartThings, tap +, choose Device, then AV.
- Select the soundbar category, tap Start, and assign the room and location.
- Return to the TV’s Sound Output menu and select the Wi-Fi speaker if it is supported.
The phone, TV, bar, and router may need to be on the same network. Guest-network isolation, mesh systems, and band steering can block discovery. Samsung also warns that Wi-Fi soundbar setup may disconnect the TV from Wi-Fi, requiring the TV to be reconnected (SmartThings instructions).

Q-Symphony: a separate compatibility check
Q-Symphony lets compatible Samsung TV speakers and a compatible Samsung soundbar or wireless speaker play together. It is not ordinary Bluetooth pairing, and a Samsung TV plus Samsung soundbar does not automatically qualify.
On supported models, use Home > Settings > All Settings > Sound > Q-Symphony Setup, select the discovered audio device, and choose Apply. Samsung’s current US page lists different combinations for selected 2025, 2024, 2022–2023 TVs and selected older soundbars; verify the exact model numbers rather than relying on a product family name (current compatibility list).
Listen with Q-Symphony on and off. If combined playback creates an echo or tonal mismatch, choose the soundbar alone. Firmware, connection method, and network requirements can affect whether the option appears.

Fix common problems
No sound over HDMI
- Verify the TV ARC/eARC port and the bar’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC) port.
- Set the bar to D.IN/ARC.
- Select the soundbar or HDMI receiver under Sound Output.
- Reseat the cable, remove connector plastic, and test another known-good cable.
- Power off, unplug briefly, reconnect, and restart both devices.
- Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices to isolate a CEC handshake issue.
- Check Anynet+/HDMI-CEC. If eARC is unstable, test standard ARC or optical.
These checks reflect Samsung’s no-sound troubleshooting sequence (official troubleshooting).

The bar is connected but TV speakers remain active
Manually select the bar in Sound Output. For HDMI, recheck the ARC label and source; for optical, select optical; for Bluetooth, confirm the connection remains active; for Wi-Fi, select the speaker as output rather than only adding it to SmartThings.
Audio is delayed
Prefer HDMI over Bluetooth, test a built-in TV app and an external HDMI source separately, disable unnecessary TV audio processing, and use the available audio-delay/lip-sync control. eARC improves the path but cannot remove all source or speaker processing latency.
Q-Symphony is missing
Check exact model numbers against Samsung’s list, update both devices where applicable, use a supported connection, place Wi-Fi devices on the same network, and restart discovery. If the feature produces an echo, leave it off.

Remote volume does not work
Ensure the external bar is selected, enable HDMI-CEC for HDMI, and test optical if appropriate. Samsung documents volume and mute control through HDMI ARC and optical; Bluetooth behavior is more model-dependent. Use the bar remote or SmartThings when necessary.

Subwoofer or rear speakers do not work
Pair the main bar with the TV first, then follow the soundbar’s model-specific instructions for its subwoofer and rear speakers. Do not add each component separately in the TV’s Bluetooth menu unless the manual explicitly says to.

Choose Samsung when you already own a compatible Samsung TV and value Q-Symphony, SmartThings, and ecosystem integration. The compact HW-S60D suits dialogue improvement and simple rooms but lacks a separate subwoofer and rear speakers. A package such as the HW-Q990D targets buyers wanting a complete premium surround system with bar, subwoofer, and rears; it is excessive for a small room or basic dialogue needs.
Consider another brand if you use a non-Samsung TV, prefer a different sound signature, or do not need Q-Symphony. In every case, check HDMI ARC/eARC, audio-format support, dialogue controls, wireless-speaker options, and HDMI-CEC behavior for the exact TV and bar. Samsung’s catalog and product pages warn that prices, promotions, availability, and specifications can change.

Can a Samsung TV connect to a non-Samsung soundbar?
Yes, through standard HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or compatible Bluetooth. Q-Symphony and some remote-control features are Samsung-specific, so verify the exact equipment.
Should I use Bluetooth or HDMI for my soundbar?
Use HDMI ARC/eARC for a permanent setup and reliable TV-app audio and control. Use Bluetooth mainly when cable-free convenience outweighs possible delay and reconnection issues.
Why is Q-Symphony unavailable on my Samsung TV?
The exact TV and soundbar combination may not support it, the connection may be unsupported, or discovery/firmware/network setup may be incomplete. Check Samsung’s current model list.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Connect the Samsung TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC), select the bar under Sound Output, and use Bluetooth only when convenience is the priority. Treat optical as the dependable fallback and Q-Symphony as an optional feature that must be confirmed by exact model number.
