A Samsung soundbar that is not working may have a power problem, the wrong input selected, a TV audio setting issue, or a failed HDMI ARC/eARC connection. Start by identifying what still works: test the soundbar with Bluetooth from a phone, then troubleshoot the connection that fails. This separates a soundbar fault from a TV, cable, or settings problem—and helps avoid an unnecessary factory reset or replacement.

Find the problem by symptom

What you see First useful test What it helps isolate
No lights or display Test the outlet and press the soundbar’s physical power button Power cord, outlet, or internal hardware
It powers on, but no source produces sound Play Bluetooth audio from a phone Soundbar audio path versus TV connection
Bluetooth works, but TV audio does not Check TV audio output, then test optical or HDMI ARC/eARC TV settings, cable, or connection handshake
TV speakers remain active Select the soundbar under the TV’s Sound Output settings TV audio routing
Display stays on D.IN with HDMI ARC Check ARC ports and HDMI-CEC, then try another cable ARC/eARC handshake
Main bar works, subwoofer or rear speakers do not Check their power and connection indicators Wireless speaker pairing or speaker settings
SmartThings cannot find the soundbar Confirm Wi-Fi and add the device again in SmartThings Network or onboarding issue
Audio cuts out from multiple sources Compare Bluetooth, optical, and TV playback; note when it happens Connection instability, software, or hardware

For model-specific instructions, find the model number on the soundbar’s rear or underside label, packaging, receipt, or—if it is connected—the SmartThings app. Samsung’s support page provides access to manuals, firmware, warranty details, and repair options. Menu names, reset procedures, and pairing steps vary by model and region.

1. Check power and basic controls

  1. Make sure the power cord is firmly connected to the soundbar and a wall outlet. Test the outlet with another device.
  2. Temporarily bypass a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord.
  3. Unplug the soundbar for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try both the physical power button and the remote.
  4. If the soundbar responds to its physical controls but not the remote, check the batteries, line of sight, and obstructions.

If there is no light, display, or response after testing a known-working outlet and cord, internal hardware may need service. Do not open the soundbar: internal components can present an electrical hazard. Stop troubleshooting and seek service if you notice smoke, a burning smell, liquid exposure, surge damage, or repeated breaker trips.

2. Select the soundbar’s actual input

Use the soundbar’s Source button or remote to select the input that matches the connection, then wait several seconds. Common labels include HDMI for a device connected directly to the bar, D.IN for digital input (often optical and, on applicable models, the initial ARC state), BT for Bluetooth, and TV ARC or eARC after a successful TV connection. A label such as D.IN is not automatically an error; what matters is whether the selected source matches the cable and device.

  • PICK UP EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE: Hear voices more clearly with dialogue automatically amplified so you don't miss a word.

3. Tell the TV to send sound to the soundbar

On many Samsung TVs, open Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output, then select the connected soundbar or receiver. The exact path and available choices vary by TV model and software version; options may include HDMI, optical, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi speaker, or TV speaker. On a non-Samsung TV, look under Sound, Audio Output, or Speakers.

If the TV’s own speakers also have no sound, check the TV’s volume, mute state, selected app or source, and audio settings first. A soundbar cannot play a signal the TV or source device is not sending. Samsung’s no-sound troubleshooting guide likewise recommends checking the selected output, source, and connection.

4. Troubleshoot HDMI ARC or eARC

ARC/eARC sends TV audio to the soundbar over HDMI. The cable must be connected to the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar port labeled something like HDMI OUT, TV-ARC, or eARC/ARC. Labels vary by model. An ordinary HDMI input on the TV is not a substitute for its ARC/eARC port.

  1. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and remove any protective caps.
  2. Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV. Samsung calls it Anynet+; on many Samsung TVs, find it at Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+. Other brands use names such as Bravia Sync, Simplink, EasyLink, VIERA Link, or CEC.
  3. Set the soundbar to D.IN as a starting point if required by the model. After a successful handshake, applicable Samsung soundbars may change to TV ARC or eARC. If it stays on D.IN, check the ports, cable, CEC setting, and TV output.
  4. Power-cycle the connection: turn off the TV and soundbar, disconnect HDMI at both ends, unplug both devices for about 30 seconds, reconnect HDMI to the ARC/eARC ports, then turn on the TV and soundbar. Select the soundbar as the TV output and check the display again.
  5. Try a short, known-good HDMI cable. A damaged or marginal cable can prevent a handshake; cable needs depend on whether the system uses ARC or eARC and on the formats being sent. Samsung recommends trying another cable if the expected ARC indication does not appear.

If the TV offers a digital audio format choice, temporarily select PCM as a compatibility test. If PCM works but Dolby, DTS, or passthrough does not, the issue may be format compatibility or output configuration. PCM can limit surround or Atmos capability, so do not assume it is the best permanent setting. Restore a supported advanced format after testing. If available, try eARC set to Auto, then ordinary ARC, and temporarily disable competing audio outputs.

  • PICK UP EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE: Hear voices more clearly with automatically amplified dialogue allowing it to stand out so you don't miss a word, no matter what you're watching.

To identify which device is at fault, test the soundbar with another ARC/eARC-capable TV if one is available. If ARC works there, focus on the original TV, its port, settings, or software. If ARC fails with both TVs, the cable or soundbar’s HDMI path becomes more suspect. If Bluetooth or optical works while ARC does not, the bar’s basic audio output may be functioning even though the HDMI connection is not.

5. Use optical as a test or fallback

  1. Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input; remove protective caps and seat both ends fully.
  2. Select D.IN on the soundbar and Optical or External Speaker/Optical in the TV’s audio-output settings.
  3. If there is no sound, try PCM on the TV and test another optical cable. A visible red light at the TV output can help confirm that it is sending an optical signal.

Optical can bypass HDMI-CEC and help determine whether the problem is limited to the ARC connection. It does not provide the same control and audio-format capabilities as eARC. Supported formats depend on the TV and soundbar.

6. Fix Bluetooth pairing

To test the soundbar independently of the TV, select BT on the bar and continue until the display shows a pairing state such as BT PAIRING or BT READY. Labels and button behavior vary by model. Open Bluetooth settings on a phone or tablet, choose the Samsung soundbar, confirm any prompt, and play audio with the volume raised on both devices.

If it will not pair, disconnect the bar from other phones, tablets, or TVs; remove old soundbar entries from the device’s Bluetooth list; move close to the bar; temporarily turn off nearby Bluetooth devices; and restart Bluetooth on the source device. Then try a second phone. If the bar pairs with another phone, the original device’s pairing or compatibility is more likely at fault. If it does not appear on any device, confirm pairing mode and check that another device is not occupying the connection. If it pairs but stays silent, check the source device’s selected audio output and volume.

If Bluetooth works from a phone but TV audio does not, that is evidence the soundbar can produce audio; focus next on the TV’s output settings and wired connection. Bluetooth is useful for diagnosis, but can introduce delay and may have fewer audio-format or control capabilities than ARC/eARC.

7. Reconnect Wi-Fi or SmartThings on supported models

Only some soundbars support Wi-Fi features. A router change, network change, reset, or software event may require setup again in SmartThings. Confirm the phone has internet access and is on the intended Wi-Fi network, restart or update SmartThings if discovery fails, then use the app’s device-add flow (often under Devices → Add device) and keep the phone near the soundbar. Some features require the TV and soundbar to be on the same network. Wi-Fi band support and app steps vary by model, region, phone, and software version; check the model manual rather than assuming every bar supports the same networks. If HDMI or Bluetooth works, a Wi-Fi discovery problem does not by itself mean the speakers are defective.

8. Check the subwoofer and rear speakers separately

The main soundbar can work while its wireless subwoofer or rear speakers are disconnected. Confirm each component has power and look at its connection indicator. A steady indicator generally suggests a connection; blinking or unusual patterns often mean pairing is incomplete, but meanings vary by model. For testing, keep the components reasonably close to the bar and away from large metal objects or enclosed cabinets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the exact model’s manual for the ID SET or manual-link procedure; there is no reliable universal button combination. Play Bluetooth audio directly through the bar: if the bar plays but the subwoofer does not, focus on pairing and speaker-level settings. If the main bar is silent too, solve that problem before troubleshooting surround components.

9. Consider a firmware update when there is a reason

Check model-specific firmware if the issue began after a software change, ARC/eARC repeatedly loses its handshake, SmartThings will not stay connected, audio drops out across multiple sources, or Samsung lists a relevant fix. Find the exact model and regional support page, download only firmware intended for that model and region, and follow Samsung’s instructions. Some models update through SmartThings or Wi-Fi, others through USB, and some may support both. Do not use a similar-looking model’s firmware or interrupt power during an update. Retest the original connection afterward before considering a factory reset.

Firmware files and versions vary by model and region. For example, Samsung’s Levant support listing for the HW-Q990F showed USB firmware version 1100, modified May 19, 2026; that does not establish which version is available for other regions or units. Use the Samsung support hub to find the page for your own model and location.

10. Reserve factory reset for last

A factory reset can erase Wi-Fi credentials, SmartThings registration, Bluetooth pairings, sound preferences, input settings, or speaker relationships, depending on the model. Identify the model, open its Samsung manual or support page, and follow the listed reset procedure exactly. Reset combinations differ; do not assume that holding the + and − buttons works for every soundbar. After a successful reset, reconnect the TV and speakers from scratch. If the reset does not complete or the display never confirms it, stop repeating the combination and seek model-specific support.

When the problem points to hardware

Continue troubleshooting if the bar powers on and at least one source works, or if the fault affects only one app, input, cable, or TV. Contact Samsung service if it has no power after outlet and cord checks, produces no sound from Bluetooth, optical, or another known-good source, repeatedly shuts down, has a damaged port, or still fails after relevant model-specific steps. Warranty eligibility depends on country, model, purchase date, seller, and damage; check the warranty and repair options for your region through Samsung support.

Before requesting service, note the model number, display message, connection type, and which tests worked. That evidence helps distinguish a TV or cable issue from a soundbar fault. Do not replace a bar just because ARC stopped working: a TV output setting, CEC handshake, or cable can cause the same symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Samsung soundbar show D.IN?

D.IN commonly identifies digital input and may be the correct source for optical or the initial state for ARC on applicable models. It is not automatically an error; check that the selected source matches the connection and whether ARC changes to TV ARC or eARC.

Why is my TV still using its own speakers?

The TV may still be set to TV Speaker. Open its Sound or Audio Output settings and select the soundbar or the connected HDMI/optical output; menu labels vary by TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I reset a Samsung soundbar?

Reset steps vary by model. Find the exact model number and use the reset procedure in its Samsung manual or support page; a reset may erase network, pairing, and sound settings.

Can I use optical instead of HDMI ARC?

Yes, if both devices have optical ports. Optical is a useful fallback or diagnostic, but does not provide the same control and audio-format capabilities as eARC.

Should I replace my soundbar if it has stopped working?

Not before testing another source and checking cables and TV output settings. If the bar fails across known-good sources or has physical or power damage, contact Samsung service and compare repair cost with replacement.
