Samsung SmartThings is an app and smart-home platform for controlling and automating compatible Samsung and third-party devices from one home dashboard. You can add many Wi-Fi, cloud-connected, and some Matter devices without buying a separate hub; Zigbee, Z-Wave, and certain LAN-connected products generally need a compatible SmartThings hub. Compatibility is model- and feature-specific, so check the exact product before buying. Samsung describes the platform and its supported features; its device and hub requirements are documented in SmartThings device support.
What the SmartThings app does
The SmartThings app is the consumer-facing control panel for a SmartThings home, which Samsung calls a location. The wider platform includes device integrations, hubs, Matter support, and developer tools. A Samsung Account is used to register and manage devices. SmartThings is not limited to Samsung products: its value is coordinating supported products from multiple manufacturers, with the available controls depending on each device’s integration.
- Control and status: Use the app to operate compatible devices and check reported states, such as whether a device is on or a sensor has changed.
- Organization: Put devices in rooms, customize the Home or Favorites view, and group supported lights or cameras.
- Automation: Build routines that act on time, sensor changes, device state, presence, or other supported conditions.
- Household access: Share control with household members and use notifications for supported events.
- Samsung integration: Connect compatible TVs and appliances, and use supported energy features and other Samsung services. Samsung also promotes features such as 3D Map View and built-in hub functions on certain newer TVs; availability varies by model and country. See Samsung’s SmartThings overview.
SmartThings Find and related Galaxy-device finding features are part of Samsung’s wider connected-device experience, not the same thing as controlling smart-home equipment. Don’t assume that every Samsung product—or every feature of a product—can be controlled in SmartThings.

SmartThings is strongest as a balance of Samsung integration, third-party support, Matter compatibility, and approachable automations. It is not universally better than Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, or Home Assistant; device support, preferred voice assistant, and willingness to maintain a hub or server should guide the choice.

Which devices work with SmartThings?
Samsung products
Compatible TVs, refrigerators, washers, dryers, air conditioners, air purifiers, robot vacuums, and Galaxy devices may connect to SmartThings. The exact model, year, firmware, region, account setup, and network can affect both availability and features.
Works with SmartThings products
Third-party products may connect through a certified or supported integration. A retailer’s generic “smart home compatible” claim is not enough: confirm the exact model in SmartThings and check whether it exposes the feature you actually want, such as dimming, a specific thermostat setting, or a sensor event.
Matter products
Matter can make supported devices easier to use across ecosystems, but the Matter label does not guarantee that every controller, phone, network, or advanced feature will work. Matter products may communicate over Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet where supported. Thread products need a suitable Thread network, typically provided by a Thread border router.

Many Wi-Fi and cloud-connected products can be added without a SmartThings hub. Zigbee and Z-Wave products, along with certain LAN-connected devices, generally require one. A Wi-Fi product can still rely on its manufacturer’s cloud rather than communicating locally with SmartThings, so “on the home Wi-Fi” does not necessarily mean it will work during an internet outage. Check compatibility before you buy
- Open SmartThings and go to Devices.
- Tap Add (+), then search for the product’s exact brand, name, or model number. You can also browse by brand or device category.
- If available, scan the product’s QR code to see whether it is recognized in the setup flow.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions and SmartThings listing for the required hub, bridge, Wi-Fi band, phone app, account, and region.
- Confirm the specific capability you need—not just that the device can be added. Check for subscriptions or separate manufacturer apps needed for advanced settings.
Samsung recommends searching by product name or model number; a product missing from the compatibility flow may not be supported. Its current lookup instructions are at Samsung’s device compatibility support page. Before checkout, verify the exact model and region, protocol, bridge or hub requirement, and whether the feature you plan to automate is exposed in SmartThings.

What you need before setup
- An Android or iOS phone or tablet that meets the current SmartThings app requirements. Samsung directs users to the app-store listing for current operating-system and storage requirements.
- The SmartThings app from the Galaxy Store, Google Play, or Apple App Store, and a Samsung Account.
- A reliable home network and the device’s QR or setup code, if it has one.
- The device powered on and put into pairing mode using its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Bluetooth, local-network, location, or notification permissions when the app or the feature requires them.
- A compatible SmartThings hub for products that need one, including Zigbee and Z-Wave devices.
App screens and available features can vary by software version, model, and country. If a label differs from the steps below, look for the equivalent device-add, routine, or voice-assistant function.
Install SmartThings and add your first device
- Install the app and sign in to, or create, a Samsung Account.
- Allow the permissions needed for the features you plan to use. Bluetooth and local-network access may assist pairing; location access is relevant to presence features, and notifications are needed for alerts.
- Create or select your home/location.
- Open Devices and tap Add (+).
- Choose the appropriate path: scan a QR code, scan for nearby devices, select a Samsung or partner brand, search by model, or choose Matter setup.
- Put the product into pairing mode as directed by its manufacturer. Keep it near the phone or hub while pairing, and follow any prompts to select a network or hub.
- Choose the correct location, assign a room, and give the device a clear name.
- Test the basic control in the app, install any offered firmware update, and add the device to Favorites or Home if you use it often.
SmartThings documents QR, nearby-scan, brand-selection, pairing, and room-assignment flows in its device support guide. Pairing screens differ by product, and some manufacturers require their own app or account for activation or advanced configuration.

- Assign every device to the correct room and use consistent room names in SmartThings and any linked voice assistant.
- Choose distinct, voice-friendly names such as “Living Room Lamp” rather than “Lamp 3.” Avoid duplicate device names.
- Keep frequently used devices visible in Favorites or Home; group similar lights or cameras where grouping is supported.
- Share access only with people who need it, and review membership when household access changes.
Routines and scenes: automate actions without creating surprises
Routines use conditions and actions
A SmartThings routine uses an IF condition to trigger THEN actions. Depending on the integration, conditions can include time, a sensor event, device state, presence, or other supported inputs. When a routine has multiple conditions, choose whether All conditions or Any condition must be met. Available triggers and actions depend on the device capabilities SmartThings receives. Samsung’s routine instructions describe the IF/THEN flow.
Scenes set a group of states
A scene is a preset combination of device states that you can run as a group. For example, a “Movie” scene might dim supported lights and turn on a TV; an “Away” scene could turn off selected lights and set compatible devices to chosen states. A scene is useful when you want one command to set a configuration rather than wait for a condition.
Create a routine and test it
- Open Favorites/Home or Routines, then tap Add (+) and choose Routine.
- Tap Add (+) beside IF and select a trigger.
- Add other conditions if needed, then choose All conditions or Any condition.
- Tap Add (+) beside THEN, select the device, service, routine, or location action, and set its target state.
- Name and save the routine. Run it manually or test its trigger before relying on it.
Examples that keep the logic simple
- Entry light: IF the front-door contact sensor opens after sunset, THEN turn on the entry light for five minutes and send a notification.
- Good morning: Run a scene to raise compatible blinds and turn on selected kitchen lights; add time or weekday conditions only if they match the household’s schedule.
- Leaving home: Use a presence trigger to turn off selected lights and set compatible devices to an away state. Test who counts as present before depending on this routine.
Start with one trigger and one action. Add complexity gradually, and check that two routines do not undo each other or repeatedly retrigger. Keep a manual override for actions that affect locks, climate, lighting, or other household-critical equipment.

Do you need a SmartThings hub?
You may not need one
If your setup consists of supported Wi-Fi, cloud-integrated, or direct Matter devices, you may be able to add them without buying a separate hub. This is the simplest starting point, but cloud-dependent products may rely on internet access and manufacturer services.
A hub is useful for protocol support
Plan on a compatible SmartThings hub for Zigbee, Z-Wave, and certain LAN-connected devices. A hub may also support hub-based local control or automations where the device and routine allow it, but its presence does not make every third-party product or feature compatible.
Check for a hub you already own
Certain Samsung TVs, including some Q60-or-higher models released after 2022, have a built-in SmartThings Hub supporting Matter, Thread, and Zigbee. This varies by exact model and region; verify the television’s specifications rather than assuming it includes these radios. Samsung’s overview is at Samsung SmartThings.
Samsung’s US page for the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 listed a price of $119.99 when checked, while availability showed unavailable. Price and stock change; check the current official product page before purchasing. It is an example of a hub option, not a required accessory for every SmartThings household.
Matter setup: what it solves and what it does not
Matter is designed to improve interoperability across smart-home platforms. It does not remove the need for a supported controller, a suitable phone/app, a working Wi-Fi or Thread network, or capability checks. A Matter device may expose basic control while keeping manufacturer-specific functions in its own app.

Check requirements first
- Use a Matter-certified device and a compatible SmartThings controller.
- For the documented commissioning flow, Samsung lists SmartThings app version 1.7.91 or later on Android, or iOS 16.2 or later with SmartThings app version 1.6.94 or later.
- Certain listed SmartThings controllers require firmware 45.9 or later.
- Know whether the device uses Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread. Thread devices need an appropriate Thread border router.
These are the requirements in Samsung’s current Matter integration instructions; check that page for supported controllers and updated requirements before setup.
Commission a Matter device
- In SmartThings, tap Add (+), choose Add Device, then select Scan.
- Scan the Matter QR code. If that fails, choose Enter and type the setup code.
- Follow the prompts to select the controller or hub, location, and room.
- Choose the Wi-Fi or Thread network when prompted, then wait for connection and test the device.
- If you want the same device in another ecosystem, use Matter multi-admin if the device and platforms support it.
If Matter setup fails
- Check that the phone is on the intended network, not an isolated guest network or VLAN.
- Confirm the router’s band and security settings meet the device’s requirements. Samsung notes that 2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz and Wi-Fi security type can affect setup.
- Verify that a Thread border router is available for a Thread product.
- Put the device into pairing mode; if it was previously commissioned, follow the manufacturer’s reset or multi-admin process.
- Check whether the QR/setup code is valid and whether SmartThings, controller, and device firmware are current.
Voice control with Bixby, Google Assistant, and Alexa
SmartThings documents integrations with Bixby, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa, but supported device types and commands differ. Before linking an assistant, review device names, room assignments, and the SmartThings location it will access; assistants may discover many or all devices in that location.
Bixby
Samsung says Bixby can connect to SmartThings through the Samsung Account, with the connection occurring automatically when Bixby is configured with that account.
Google Assistant
- In SmartThings, tap Menu (☰), choose Voice assistant, then Google Assistant.
- Open Google Assistant, choose Set up, tap Add (+), and search for SmartThings.
- Authorize the connection and assign discovered devices to rooms.
Samsung documents lighting, plugs, thermostats in the United States, manual routines, and some motion/contact-sensor status checks, subject to certification and account configuration.
Amazon Alexa
- In SmartThings, tap Menu (☰), choose Voice assistant, then Amazon Alexa.
- Enable SmartThings in the Amazon app, authorize the connection, and run device discovery.
Samsung lists support for lights, switches, dimmers, thermostats, locks, manual routines, and some sensor-status capabilities. Exact availability can vary. Setup details for all three services are in SmartThings voice-service support.

Reliability, cloud services, and internet outages
SmartThings devices can communicate through different paths. A local device-to-hub or local network path is different from a cloud-to-cloud integration, where SmartThings relies on the manufacturer’s internet service. Remote phone control uses an internet connection; voice control may add another assistant service. Those paths affect what continues working if a router, internet connection, cloud service, hub, or device fails.
Some hub-based or local automations may continue during an internet outage; cloud-dependent integrations, remote access, notifications, and voice services may not. The result depends on the exact device, integration, hub, firmware, and routine, so do not treat “SmartThings compatible” as a guarantee of offline operation.
Troubleshoot common SmartThings problems
A device will not pair
- Confirm that it is powered and in pairing mode, and keep it near the phone or hub.
- Check Bluetooth, local-network, and other requested permissions, along with the phone’s Wi-Fi connection.
- Verify exact model and regional support, and install the manufacturer app if required.
- If it was linked to another account or a previous attempt failed, follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions. A used Matter setup code may require a fresh pairing process.
A device appears but has limited controls
SmartThings can expose only the capabilities available through that device’s integration. Basic power control may work while advanced modes do not; some products provide status but not configuration. Check the manufacturer’s app and the SmartThings device listing to see whether the missing feature is supported.

A device is offline
- Check physical power and test the device in its manufacturer app, if applicable.
- Check router and Wi-Fi status, then restart the device.
- If a hub is involved, restart it and check for firmware updates.
- Confirm that linked accounts or cloud services remain connected.
- For Zigbee or Z-Wave devices, check hub distance and mesh coverage, including whether a suitable repeater is needed.
- Remove and re-add the device only after simpler checks. Z-Wave products may need an exclusion process or physical action before they can be paired again; follow SmartThings’ Z-Wave guidance.
A routine does not run
- Confirm the correct location, that the routine is enabled, and that the trigger actually changed.
- Check whether multiple conditions require All or Any, and verify the schedule and time zone.
- For presence routines, check phone location permissions and the intended household members.
- Confirm that the target device is online and supports the action.
- Look for another routine or service that may reverse the result, or a cloud dependency that is unavailable.
A voice assistant cannot find a device
Confirm that the accounts are linked and authorized for the correct location, the device has a room assignment, and discovery or sync has run. Check whether that assistant supports the device type and action. Unique names can prevent confusion with duplicate devices.
Privacy and shared access
SmartThings can involve Samsung services, manufacturer integrations, voice assistants, and connected-device accounts, so safeguards should cover the whole setup:
- Use a strong Samsung Account password and enable available account protections.
- Share access only with trusted household members; remove old members and integrations when they no longer need access.
- Review linked services, notifications, and location permissions. Be especially deliberate about sharing cameras, locks, garage doors, and presence information.
- Keep phones, routers, hubs, and device firmware updated, and reset products before selling or transferring them.
Security and privacy depend on the specific device, protocol, account, and partner service; no single app setting establishes the same protection for every product.
Does the October 2026 API change affect app users?
Samsung announced that new commercial SmartThings API tiers and a $4.99-per-month personal developer plan are targeted for October 2026, with free API access remaining through Q3 2026. The announcement says ordinary users controlling devices in the SmartThings app are not affected. The plan is a developer/API matter, not a new consumer app subscription; see Samsung’s API announcement.
