The incident was reported, but it has not been independently verified. SamMobile reported on December 8, 2025, citing a Reddit post by the woman’s sibling, that a Samsung Family Hub refrigerator displayed an advertisement reading “We’re sorry we upset you, Carol.” The woman, who was reportedly named Carol and had a history of schizophrenia and psychotic episodes, allegedly interpreted the message as being directed at her and was hospitalized for two days.
The public evidence does not establish that the advertisement medically caused psychosis. It supports a more limited conclusion: the message was reportedly experienced as personally directed and may have intensified an existing mental-health crisis.
What the advertisement reportedly said
According to SamMobile’s report, the advertisement appeared on a Samsung Family Hub refrigerator with a bright yellow background and the message: “We’re sorry we upset you, Carol.”

That connection is the reported explanation for the name in the advertisement—not an independently documented statement from Apple or Samsung.

What is confirmed—and what is not
Samsung has confirmed that its 2025 Family Hub software update introduced curated advertisements to selected refrigerator cover-screen themes. Samsung’s October 27, 2025 announcement says the ads are contextual or non-personal, can be dismissed, and can be disabled.
The individual hospitalization is less firmly established. SamMobile attributed the account to a Reddit post from the woman’s sibling. The reviewed public material does not include independently verifiable medical records, a statement from the woman, comments from clinicians, or confirmation from Samsung or Apple.
- Reported: the woman’s diagnosis, previous episodes, medication use, hospitalization, and medication adjustment.
- Documented by Samsung: the Family Hub advertising feature and its opt-out controls.
- Not independently established: the woman’s identity, the hospitalization, and whether the advertisement alone precipitated the episode.
Why a normal advertisement could feel personal
A message containing someone’s name can seem highly personalized even when it is coincidental. In psychosis, some people experience ideas of reference—the belief that otherwise neutral events, messages, or media are specifically about them. That possibility provides mental-health context, but it does not permit outsiders to diagnose the individual described in the report.
The same advertisement may be harmless to one viewer and deeply distressing to another. The available account does not show whether the ad was the sole trigger, whether other symptoms or circumstances were involved, or whether medication changes preceded the crisis. It is therefore inaccurate and stigmatizing to say simply that Samsung “made” someone psychotic.
Why Samsung refrigerators began showing ads
Samsung’s 2025 Family Hub update added a cover-screen widget that can display information such as news, calendars, and weather, along with curated advertisements on selected themes. The feature applies to compatible Family Hub refrigerators and software; it does not mean that every Samsung refrigerator displays advertising.

Availability and menu names can vary by country, model, and software version. Samsung says the ads are contextual or non-personal and that the feature does not use personal information or track consumers for those advertisements. That statement applies to this Family Hub advertising feature and should not be generalized to every Samsung advertising system or device category.
Samsung also says that dismissing an ad prevents that specific ad from appearing again during its campaign period. Dismissing one promotion is not necessarily the same as opting out of all cover-screen advertising.
How to turn off Family Hub cover-screen ads
Samsung’s current support instructions give this path:
- Open Settings on the refrigerator.
- Tap Advertisements.
- Tap Cover screen Ads.
- Switch the setting to Off.
Samsung’s support page says a software update may be required before the option appears. The exact labels can also differ: some models may use Screen and Style or Wallpaper and Style.
If the advertising option is missing
- Check for and install available refrigerator software updates.
- Return to Settings and look for the advertising control again.
- Choose the Album or Art cover-screen theme if available. Samsung says those themes do not display these ads.
- If the setting remains unavailable, contact Samsung support with the refrigerator’s model number and software version.
Turning off the feature may also remove the associated cover-screen widget and some weather or information content. Using Album or Art likewise changes the idle-screen appearance and may remove information widgets a household wants to keep.

The larger consumer question
The reported coincidence drew attention because it involved a personal-looking message on a household appliance. The broader issue is that software updates can change the function of an appliance after purchase. A premium refrigerator’s display may be understood as a utility interface rather than an advertising surface, particularly when it shows messages in a direct or emotionally charged style.
That raises reasonable design questions: Should advertising be enabled by default? Should opt-out controls be more prominent? Should manufacturers avoid names, apologies, or wording that can appear to address a specific household member? These are consumer and product-design questions, not findings established by the reported case.
For households concerned about confusing or distressing messages, disabling Cover screen Ads and choosing a static, Album, or Art theme are the clearest documented steps. Anyone experiencing a mental-health crisis should follow their existing care or crisis plan and seek urgent local medical help when necessary.
Bottom line
Samsung’s Family Hub advertising feature is real, and Samsung provides a way to disable it. The hospitalization story, however, remains a secondhand reported account rather than an independently confirmed medical case. The responsible conclusion is that the advertisement reportedly contributed to a crisis—not that it has been proven to cause psychosis.
