Samsung says eligible Wi-Fi-connected home appliances can receive software updates for up to seven years—but the clock starts at the appliance project’s initial launch, not necessarily when you buy it. The policy begins with models launched in 2024, and it does not cover every Samsung appliance or guarantee every new feature on every model.
What Samsung announced
On August 25, 2025, Samsung announced two related changes: it is expanding its One UI software experience to home appliances, and it will provide software updates for up to seven years to eligible Wi-Fi-enabled appliances. Samsung said updates for eligible 2024-launched models would begin in September 2025. That was the announced rollout start, not confirmation that every eligible model received an update at the same time in every country. Samsung’s announcement describes One UI as a more consistent experience across devices; it does not say appliances are becoming Galaxy phones or switching wholesale to the phone operating system.
Which appliances may qualify?
Samsung names these categories of Wi-Fi-enabled appliances:
- Refrigerators, including Family Hub and some screen-equipped models.
- Washers and dryers.
- Air conditioners.
- Environmental heating and cooling systems, or EHS products.
- Slide-in induction ranges.
The announcement focuses on models launched in 2024 and says availability varies by country and model. A product-family name, purchase year, or Samsung branding alone does not establish eligibility. The appliance must be a qualifying Wi-Fi model, and hardware or regional differences can affect which updates and features it supports.

How the seven-year clock works
Samsung measures the support period from the appliance project’s initial launch, regardless of when the model is released in a particular country. That means a 2024-launched appliance bought in 2026 may already have used part of its potential support window. Check the specific model’s local support information rather than treating your purchase date as the start date.
The commitment is for software updates for up to seven years. Samsung’s announcement does not define a fixed update schedule or promise seven years of major feature upgrades or a separately specified security-patch cadence for every model. Samsung also notes that hardware limits—including memory and chip performance—may prevent some updates. Nor is software support a repair, replacement, parts-availability, or appliance-durability guarantee.

What One UI can bring to connected appliances
The announced experience includes refreshed interfaces and access to services and functions such as Bixby, Gallery, SmartThings, and Samsung TV Plus on supported refrigerator screens. Availability depends on the appliance, apps, region, language, and network connection. Family Care, Pet Care, and Home Care require a Wi-Fi-capable appliance connected to SmartThings; some functions also need network access.
Now Brief is planned from 2026
Samsung says Now Brief will come to home appliances from 2026. It is intended to surface personalized information such as the day’s weather, family schedules, tailored recipes, and home insights such as remaining laundry time. A Samsung Account is required, and availability depends on country, language, model, and supported apps. The announcement does not establish that every 2026 appliance will include it.

Screen and sensor features remain model-specific
Samsung says Family Hub and 9-inch-screen refrigerators will receive an upgraded AI Vision Inside that can recognize frequently used packaged foods as well as a wider range of fresh foods. Samsung’s footnote says that, as of April 2025, the system could recognize 37 food items such as fresh fruit and vegetables; it cannot identify food in refrigerator door bins or the freezer, and it may label unrecognized items as unknown. Packaged-food recognition also has limits. This is an enhancement to compatible hardware, not a capability that a software update can add to every refrigerator.
For washers, Samsung specifically identifies screen-equipped Bespoke AI models with 7-inch screens for advanced protections such as encrypted Credential Sync and passkey support. It also describes refreshed One UI elements for certain 2024 washers. Those details should not be generalized to washers without displays or to every model in the range.

Security benefits—and their limits
Samsung says eligible 2024 Wi-Fi appliances will receive security-related improvements that can include Knox Matrix and Trust Chain, which lets connected appliances monitor one another’s security status, as well as Encrypted Credential Sync. Passkeys and a Knox Security dashboard are described for certain screen-equipped models. Knox Matrix is stated to apply globally except in China; specific capabilities still vary by model and country.

How current owners can check their appliance
- Find the appliance’s exact model number on its product label, documentation, or device information.
- Confirm that the model has Wi-Fi connectivity; a similar nonconnected model does not qualify on that basis.
- Check Samsung’s support information for your country or the model’s information in SmartThings. Do not assume a universal menu path: labels and app screens can differ by region, firmware, and app version.
- Install any firmware updates Samsung makes available for that model, and keep the SmartThings app and Samsung Account details current if you use connected services.
Samsung has not published a single model-by-model eligibility list or universal rollout timetable in the announcement, so the exact model and local support details are the practical checks that matter.
Does the policy make a Samsung appliance a better buy?
It can be a meaningful advantage if you keep appliances for many years and actively use connected features: continued software support may help preserve security and allow some interface or service improvements. It is not a measured guarantee of lower ownership cost or longer mechanical life. A supported appliance can still need repairs, and updates cannot prevent wear to components such as pumps, compressors, sensors, or seals.
Weigh the policy alongside repair access, parts availability, warranty, energy use, reliability information, privacy preferences, and price. Buyers who do not want accounts, Wi-Fi dependence, or cloud features may get little value from the promise; a simpler nonconnected model may suit them better. Before paying extra for a screen or connected functions, verify that the exact model supports the services you want in your country. For official product-category information, see Samsung’s U.S. home-appliance listings; that page is not, by itself, proof that a particular model qualifies.
How this compares with Galaxy phones
The announcement extends Samsung’s long-support approach to another category of connected devices, but the appliance commitment should be read on its own terms. The phrase “from Galaxy phones” is useful context, not proof that every Galaxy phone has the same support policy or that appliances receive phone-style operating-system upgrades.
