Samsung showed a robot picking up dishes and placing them in a dishwasher at CES 2021—but it was a research demonstration, not a consumer product. The robot, called Bot Handy, illustrated the challenge of getting a machine to recognize, grip and position everyday objects; Samsung said it was not available for sale.
What the video shows
The demonstration shows Bot Handy working in a kitchen: it identifies dishware, picks up individual items and transfers them into a dishwasher. The notable part is placing the dishes inside, not simply carrying them. The clip is about loading; it does not show the robot washing or unloading dishes, scraping off food, adding detergent or starting a cycle. Futurism’s January 11, 2021 report described the scene as an engineering demonstration rather than a product launch.
Samsung presented Bot Handy at virtual CES 2021 as a household assistant under development. Its stated aim was to help with chores by recognizing and manipulating objects, including sorting items and cleaning up a messy room. In its CES announcement, Samsung said the robot could identify objects with different sizes, shapes, weights and materials, then apply an appropriate gripping force.

Why loading dishes is a demanding robotics task
A dish does not have a single obvious grip or destination. The robot must interpret a changing scene, move safely through a confined space and leave each item in a useful position. Those are distinct problems, even when a demonstration makes the sequence look simple.

- Recognizing objects: Plates, bowls, cups, utensils and cookware have different shapes. Glass and polished metal can be difficult to distinguish visually, while stacked or overlapping items may hide one another.
- Choosing a grip: A grasp must be stable without crushing a fragile item or letting a slippery one fall. Ceramic, glass, plastic and metal differ in weight, friction and tolerance for pressure.
- Navigating clutter: An arm must avoid the counter, sink, dishwasher door, racks and nearby objects while reaching for and moving a dish.
- Placing rather than dropping: A dish needs to fit a rack in a usable orientation. Merely getting it inside the dishwasher is not the same as loading it effectively.
- Handling uncertainty: Water, grease and food residue can change an object’s weight or grip. Utensils, nested bowls and crowded racks add further variation.
Samsung Research later said its CES 2022 work addressed differently shaped objects in different positions, including transparent or partly obstructed objects. Those are Samsung’s descriptions of the research, not independent performance measurements. The scenarios still leave practical questions about performance with wet, greasy or unfamiliar dishware.
What Samsung’s CES 2022 follow-up added
At CES 2022, Samsung Research revisited Bot Handy with a “tableware handling” scenario. It highlighted three areas: dexterous manipulation, general object handling, and a larger three-dimensional workspace made possible by mobility and elevation. The follow-up shows that Samsung was still publicly presenting development work around the concept in 2022; it does not establish that a consumer model subsequently launched. Samsung Research’s CES 2022 account describes the scenario and those technical areas.

How much autonomy did the demonstration establish?
Samsung presented Bot Handy as an AI-enabled robot that could recognize and manipulate household objects. But the available descriptions do not establish how much of the filmed sequence was autonomous, supervised, pre-scripted, teleoperated or assisted by people. Samsung’s CES announcement says its capabilities were demonstrated in test settings, so the video should not be treated as evidence of an unsupervised robot reliably working in an ordinary home.

Can you buy Samsung Bot Handy?
No—not on the basis of Samsung’s CES 2021 announcement. Samsung called Bot Handy a project in development and explicitly said it was “not currently available for sale.” That announcement supplied no consumer price, release date, model number or ordering process. The cited CES 2022 material documents further research but does not confirm a later retail launch. These sources therefore establish its development status through 2022, not its status on every later date.

What a household-ready version would need to prove
A polished demonstration is only one part of the evidence a buyer would need. For routine use, a dishwasher-loading robot would need to show that it can:
- Handle varied plates, bowls, glasses, cookware and utensils without damaging them.
- Cope with water, grease and food residue, as well as overlapping or partly hidden objects.
- Place dishes securely and efficiently in different dishwasher racks.
- Avoid damaging the dishwasher, nearby objects or people, and respond safely around children or pets.
- Recognize a failed grasp, stop safely and recover or ask for help rather than continue blindly.
- Complete the task at a practical speed and cost. Samsung’s cited announcements provide no performance measurements to judge those points.
Bot Handy is not Samsung’s robot vacuum
Bot Handy was intended to manipulate household objects; a robot vacuum primarily navigates floors and collects dirt. The latter is a more constrained task, while a mobile manipulation robot must combine vision, grasping, force control, movement and task planning in changing surroundings. Samsung’s CES 2021 announcement separately described the JetBot 90 AI+ vacuum, including object recognition and sensors. That is a different product category, not another name for Bot Handy. Samsung’s CES announcement discusses both systems.
