A Samsung AC filter reset clears the filter-cleaning reminder timer; it does not clean the filter or fix an air-conditioner fault. Clean and reinstall the appropriate filter first, then reset the reminder using the procedure for your specific model and controller. Samsung uses several different methods, so there is no single button sequence that works for every wall-mounted, WindFree, window, multi-split, or system air conditioner.
A display such as CF, “Filter Clean,” or a filter icon is usually a scheduled maintenance reminder—not an error code. The indicator is generally based on accumulated operating time rather than a sensor measuring how dirty the filter is. Samsung explains how the reminder works; the exact labels and reset steps can vary by model and region.
What does “Filter Reset” mean on a Samsung AC?
Filter Reset clears or restarts the air conditioner’s filter-cleaning reminder timer. It tells the unit that scheduled filter maintenance has been done. On many models, the reminder appears after a period of accumulated use, rather than because the AC has detected a particular amount of dust.

Keep these four actions separate:
- Clean the filter: physically remove dust from a washable filter.
- Reset the reminder: clear the scheduled notification after maintenance.
- Replace a filter: fit a new filter only when that filter type or its condition calls for replacement.
- Reset the AC: restart or reset the appliance more broadly. This is not normally needed just to clear a filter reminder.
Resetting the timer alone does not clean the filter, confirm that it is clean, or improve cooling. Dust buildup can obstruct airflow and affect cooling or heating performance; cleaning may help restore airflow if the filter is the cause. Samsung’s filter guidance describes both the reminder and the effect of a clogged filter.

Is CF or a filter light an error?
Usually, no. “CF,” “Filter Clean,” “Filter Reset,” a filter-grid symbol, or a flashing filter lamp commonly indicates routine filter maintenance. Samsung India, for example, identifies CF as a filter-cleaning reminder, but not every Samsung AC uses CF or displays the same message. Check the manual for your exact model and market. Samsung India’s CF guidance is region-specific.

A filter reminder can appear at the same time as a genuine fault. Do not assume that clearing the reminder will resolve leaking, icing, unusual fan or motor noise, poor cooling, or a separate error code.
Clean the filter safely before resetting
These general steps apply to an accessible, washable dust filter. Filter layouts and care differ: a Samsung AC may also contain fine-particle, deodorizing, PM, Tri-Care, disposable, or other specialized filters. Do not wash a filter unless the instructions for that filter and model permit it. Samsung’s guidance supports vacuuming light dust and washing some heavily soiled filters with mild or neutral detergent. - Turn the AC off. Disconnect power if the model’s manual or cleaning instructions require it.
- Open the panel as described in the manual. Do not force a panel or filter that will not release easily.
- Remove the washable dust filter carefully.
- For light dust, vacuum the filter gently.
- If washing is permitted and the filter is heavily soiled, rinse it with water and use only a mild or neutral detergent if the model instructions allow it. Do not scrub aggressively, wring, bend, or use harsh chemicals.
- Rinse away detergent thoroughly.
- Let the filter dry completely in a shaded, ventilated place. Do not reinstall a damp filter or dry it in strong direct sunlight; Samsung warns that heat and sun can deform some filters, affecting fit or causing noise.
- Reinstall the filter in the correct orientation and make sure it is seated properly. Close the panel.
- Restore power if you disconnected it, then use the matching reset procedure below.
- Run the unit briefly and check for normal airflow, noise, and odor.
Cleaning intervals depend on dust, pollution, pets, smoking, construction, run time, and indoor air conditions. Inspect the filter whenever the reminder appears, and check it sooner if airflow or odor worsens. Weekly cleaning may be appropriate in dusty conditions; it is not a universal interval for every Samsung AC. Samsung Australia gives dusty conditions as a reason for more frequent cleaning.
How to reset the Samsung AC filter reminder
Match the instructions to the controls in front of you. The examples below are documented Samsung procedures for certain controller families, not universal instructions. A button sequence may differ even between products with similar names. Find the full model number on the indoor unit label, invoice, or manual, and use the manual for that model and region if your controller does not match. Samsung’s controller-specific examples are collected in its filter-indicator reset guidance.
Wireless remote with a Filter Reset button
On certain Samsung remote families, including listed AR-AH(C) examples, press and hold Filter Reset for about four seconds. Wait briefly and check whether the reminder clears.

Some AR-EH(C) and AR-KH(C) remotes use a menu:
- Press Additional Functions.
- Use the left/right controls or jog dial to select Filter Reset.
- Press OK or Confirm.
Menu wording may be translated or presented differently by region.
Wall-mounted or window unit with secondary functions
Some models use a secondary-function sequence: press 2ndF, then the model-specific button (which may be labeled Clean, Alarm Off, Operation Stop, or Additional Options), select Filter Reset with the arrow controls, and press Confirm or OK. The available button and sequence vary. Samsung documents examples for selected wall-mounted and window models.

Wired controller
Depending on the wired-controller model, Samsung documents procedures such as holding Filter Reset for four seconds; holding Quiet/Sleep and Indoor Temperature together for at least four seconds; or opening Additional Functions → Filter Reset, selecting the intended indoor unit, and confirming. Do not try a button combination merely because it appears on another Samsung controller.
Central controller or DMS
In a multi-unit or commercial installation, the reset may be made through a central controller or Samsung DMS rather than a handheld remote. Select the relevant indoor unit in the control or monitoring screen, open the filter-reset function, and send or confirm the command. The precise screens depend on the system configuration; ask the building operator or consult the controller documentation if you do not have access.
Does switching the unit off and on reset it?
Some Samsung models may clear the reminder after a power cycle, but this is not a dependable method for all units. Samsung notes that some models released in 2021 require a direct reset from the remote. Do not use the circuit breaker as a default reminder-reset method; use the documented control for your model. How to tell whether the reset worked
Depending on the model, the filter icon or lamp may turn off, CF may disappear, the unit may beep, or the reminder may simply stop appearing at startup. Some models may not provide an obvious confirmation tone. Wait briefly after the command, then check the display and, if appropriate, restart the unit. Do not treat one expected sound or light color as universal.
If the filter reminder stays on
- Check the filter and panel. Make sure the filter is dry, correctly oriented, and fully seated, and that the panel is closed as the manual requires.
- Check the control labels. Your remote may use Alarm Off, Clean, 2ndF, Additional Functions, or a menu instead of a dedicated Filter Reset button.
- Hold the control for the specified time. Several Samsung procedures call for about four seconds; a quick tap may not register. Follow the exact model instructions rather than repeating random combinations.
- For a multi-split or system unit, select the right indoor unit. A controller may address one unit at a time. Confirm that the reset was sent to the unit displaying the reminder.
- Confirm the model and region. Product families, remotes, and translated labels can differ by market. Use the full model number to find the correct manual or contact Samsung support.
- Consider another fault. If the reminder clears but cooling remains poor—or you see water, ice, an error code, repeated shutdowns, or unusual noise—the filter timer is not the whole problem. Seek appropriate service rather than repeatedly resetting it.
Avoid resetting the timer without cleaning the filter: doing so can postpone the next reminder while leaving dust and restricted airflow in place.
Does the filter need replacing?
No—not merely because the filter reminder appeared. Many Samsung AC dust filters are washable and reusable. Replace a filter when the model specifies a replacement type or when it is torn, warped, brittle, permanently clogged, missing, or no longer fits correctly. Specialized filters may have different cleaning and replacement rules; for example, Samsung Philippines says certain Tri-Care filters should be obtained through a service center. Check Samsung’s regional cleaning guidance and the exact model manual before ordering a part.
Match any replacement to the full model number, not just “Samsung AC filter.” Filter size and type vary. If the filter is accessible and washable, routine cleaning usually does not require a service visit; a damaged or specialized filter may require an exact compatible part or professional help.
AC filter reminders are not air-purifier replacement reminders
An AC’s washable dust-filter cleaning reminder is not automatically equivalent to a Samsung air purifier’s filter-replacement reminder. Air purifiers may use replaceable dust-collection or deodorizing filters and different reset rules. Do not apply instructions from an air-purifier manual to an AC, or vice versa. For either product, follow the manual for its exact model and filter type.
When to contact Samsung or an HVAC professional
Contact Samsung support or a qualified HVAC professional if the filter is inaccessible, the panel or filter frame is damaged, the controller does not match the available instructions, or the reminder persists after you have followed the exact model procedure. Arrange diagnosis if the unit continues to cool poorly after a clean, dry, correctly installed filter, or if it leaks, ices up, makes unusual mechanical noise, shuts down repeatedly, or displays an error code. Do not open refrigerant circuits or attempt electrical repairs yourself. For a commercial or centrally controlled system, contact the building operator or service provider responsible for that system.
