To route a straight slot with crisp ends, mark the slot, center a slot-sized bit with the router-table fence, control both endpoints with stops, and guide the workpiece between a parallel auxiliary guide and the fence. Drill overlapping holes inside the layout first with a bit 1/8 inch smaller than the finished slot width, then let the router make the final clean-up pass.
What this router-table setup accomplishes
This method is intended for an arrow-straight slot with controlled length, clean edges and square, repeatable ends. WOOD Magazine describes the approach as a way to avoid the wandering that can occur when you drill end holes and saw out the connecting waste. Its stated goal is “For arrow-straight slots with crisp, clean ends and edges, let your router table, a few shop-made accessories, and a little know-how help you produce on-target results.” (WOOD Magazine Staff, updated July 7, 2023.)
Set up the slot before switching on the router
- Lay out the slot. Draw both long boundary lines and extend the two end lines all the way to the workpiece edges. The extensions make the endpoint marks visible while you position the bit and stops.
- Choose and center the bit. Install a router bit sized for the intended slot width. Position the router-table fence so the bit is centered between the two layout lines.
- Set the stops from the marks. Align the marked slot ends with the corresponding edges of the bit. Set a starting stop and an ending stop at those positions; the stops, rather than your eyesight during the cut, determine the slot length.
- Add a parallel auxiliary guide. Clamp a straight guide parallel to the fence, leaving just enough clearance for the workpiece to slide freely between the fence and guide without twisting.
- Remove most of the waste. Drill overlapping holes inside the layout lines using a drill bit 1/8 inch smaller than the slot width. Keep the holes inside the boundaries so a narrow, continuous margin remains for the router to remove.
Route the slot in one controlled pass
- Place the workpiece against the starting stop and hold it firmly against the fence and auxiliary guide.
- Start the router and allow it to reach operating speed before bringing the workpiece to the bit.
- Lower the workpiece onto the spinning bit at the starting stop, then feed it along the guide toward the ending stop. Keep the workpiece moving in a controlled manner and maintain contact with both guides.
- Stop the feed when the workpiece reaches the ending stop, then withdraw it without allowing the slot to overrun the mark.
- Inspect the slot against the layout lines. The router should remove the thin margin left by the overlapping holes, leaving the bit-defined width and stop-defined length.
The fence establishes the slot’s lateral position, the auxiliary guide prevents yaw as the piece travels, and the two stops establish the ends. Changing any one of those references changes the result, so reset them whenever the workpiece or slot dimensions change.

Routing repeated angled slots in shutter stiles
A straight router-table slot and a series of angled louver slots are different jobs. For fixed-louver shutters, Fine Homebuilding describes a dedicated indexed jig that holds the stile in a channel and guides the router at a fixed angle. The following dimensions belong to that published shutter example, not to every louver design.

How the indexed jig works
- A channel holds the shutter stile.
- A stop block and dowel index through holes spaced 1-3/8 inches apart, establishing repeatable slot spacing.
- A bridge holds the router at 18 degrees to the stile.
- A recess in the bridge limits router travel for each slot.
- The bridge can be repositioned to cut mirror-image slots in the mating stile.
The layout must also account for the rails: leave the required clear space at the ends, and omit the slots where a middle rail interrupts the louver field. The shutter example is completed with mortise-and-tenon joinery. See Fine Homebuilding issue 74 for that jig’s construction and sequence.

Neither source supplies comparative test data or establishes one method as best for every workpiece. Choose the router-table setup when the requirement is a controlled straight slot; build an indexed jig when repeated angled slots and consistent spacing are the central problem.

Checks that prevent common errors
- Slot too narrow: verify that the installed bit matches the intended finished width and that the roughing holes were made with a bit 1/8 inch smaller than that width.
- Ends too long or too short: realign the bit edges to the marked endpoint lines and reset both stops before cutting another piece.
- Wandering or tapered slot: increase control at the fence and auxiliary guide; the workpiece must slide between parallel references without twisting.
- Uneven shutter spacing: use the jig’s indexing dowel and holes rather than measuring each slot independently.
- Mirror-image stile does not match: reposition the shutter jig’s bridge as described for the mating stile and confirm the stile orientation before routing.
