Roborock has demonstrated a robot vacuum that can climb stairs and perform small jumps—but it is not a product you can currently buy. The Saros Rover, unveiled at CES 2026, uses articulated wheel-legs to move across changing floor levels, maintain balance and clean stair treads. Roborock presented it as a development project, with no confirmed retail price or release date in the available information.
What is the Roborock Saros Rover?
The Saros Rover is a wheel-leg robot vacuum rather than a conventional circular vacuum with a larger wheel or climbing accessory. Roborock says it uses two independently articulated wheel-legs that can raise, lower and reposition the machine as the surface changes. The company describes the design in its CES 2026 announcement as a first-of-its-kind wheel-leg architecture for a robot vacuum.
In principle, the articulated legs allow the vacuum to keep its body relatively level while moving from one stair tread to the next. Motion sensors, three-dimensional spatial information and AI-based control are intended to help it react to edges, uneven surfaces and obstacles.

Can it really climb stairs?
At CES 2026 on January 6, Roborock demonstrated the Rover moving up and down stair-like surfaces. The company said it could clean individual steps while ascending and could handle a range of non-flat surfaces, including curved and spiral staircases. The Associated Press also reported on the stair-climbing demonstration.
That proves the concept can perform a controlled demonstration. It does not yet prove that a production version can safely and repeatedly clean every residential staircase. Real homes introduce different tread depths, riser heights, carpets, polished wood, landings, banisters, clutter, pets and people.
What does “jump” mean?
The Rover’s jump is a small hop or brief lift used to clear a minor obstacle—not a dramatic leap over a staircase, furniture or large household object. Independent CES coverage from Vacuum Wars observed the robot making a small jump over a laser obstacle.

Does it actually clean the stairs?
Roborock says the Rover can clean each stair tread as it climbs, which is more useful than a machine that merely transports itself between floors. However, the available demonstration material does not provide independent stair-cleaning measurements.
Important unanswered questions include:
- How effectively does it collect debris from stair edges, corners and risers?
- Can it handle pet hair, loose carpet and narrow or shallow treads?
- Does it clean every step on both ascent and descent?
- What happens when a tread is wet, slippery or obstructed?
- Can it return safely to a dock after reaching another floor?
A mobility demonstration and a standardized cleaning test are different things.
The crucial distinction: Saros Rover versus Saros 20
Roborock’s CES lineup also included commercial robot vacuums, which makes it easy to confuse the stair-climbing Rover with the retail Saros 20. They are different machines.

The Saros 20’s AdaptiLift Chassis 3.0 is designed to cross raised door thresholds and floor transitions. Roborock’s stated approximately 8.5 cm total applies to a particular double-layer threshold configuration; it does not mean the machine can climb a flight of stairs. Why stairs are difficult for robot vacuums
Stair climbing requires much more than a powerful motor. A practical robot must maintain traction on a narrow tread, keep its center of gravity stable while lifting, detect the next edge and prevent a fall. It also needs to preserve contact between its brushes or mop and the surface.
Different staircases add further complications:
- Polished wood can reduce traction, especially when damp.
- Curved and spiral stairs change direction and tread geometry continuously.
- Open-riser stairs may provide little physical support beneath the machine.
- Loose carpets, toys, cords and pet interference can disrupt movement.
- Banisters and walls can leave too little room for a wide articulated mechanism.
- Repeated lifting and impacts place extra loads on legs, joints, wheels and sensors.
A finished product would also need dependable multi-floor mapping, charging, dust disposal and—where applicable—water management. It would have to know which dock belongs to which floor and avoid becoming stranded halfway up or down the staircase.
Is the Saros Rover available to buy?
Not according to the available official and high-quality coverage. The Rover was presented as being under development. No confirmed consumer price, launch date, retail listing or established warranty and replacement-parts program was identified in the available material. Tom’s Guide and T3 both treated it as a development or demonstration product.

What can buyers use today?
- Saros 20: The closest current option for high floor transitions, with threshold-crossing technology. It does not climb stairs. Roborock’s U.S. store listed it at $1,599.99 in the cited snapshot.
- Saros 20 Sonic: A related flagship with a different mopping system; the U.S. store listed it at $1,699.99. It also does not climb stairs.
- Saros Z70: Uses an OmniGrip mechanical arm for object handling, not stair climbing.
- Qrevo Curv 2 Flow: Focuses on floor washing and roller-mop performance, not multilevel mobility.
- Manual vacuum or floor cleaner: Still the practical choice for cleaning stair treads today.

If automatic stair cleaning is the main requirement, do not buy a Saros 20 expecting it to become a stair-climbing machine. Wait for a retail Rover—or another stair-capable product—to receive independent testing that covers safety, cleaning performance and long-term durability.
For homes that mainly have tall door thresholds, the Saros 20 may be relevant. For dependable cleaning across multiple floors today, separate robots on each level or carrying a conventional robot between floors remains more realistic. A handheld or stick vacuum is still better suited to stairs when immediate, supervised cleaning matters.

What testing would make the Rover genuinely convincing?
Before treating the Rover as a practical replacement for one robot per floor, buyers should look for evidence of:

The added mechanics could make the Rover far more capable than a conventional robot, but they could also increase battery use, service complexity, exposure to hair and dust, and purchase price.
Why this matters beyond one Roborock model
The Saros Rover points toward a broader change in domestic robotics: machines designed for uneven, vertically divided homes rather than only flat floors. Wheel-leg mobility could eventually help robots cross thresholds, tracks and other transitions while reducing no-go zones.
But the important benchmark is not whether a robot can perform an impressive movement at a trade show. It is whether it can climb, clean, recharge, avoid falls and repeat the process safely in real homes. The Rover has demonstrated an intriguing capability; it has not yet established that complete ownership experience.
