The Rio Arc was an unusually attractive electric panel heater with direct Apple HomeKit support, effective room heating, and both wall-mounted and freestanding installation. But a review written in December 2021 is no longer enough to justify buying one in 2026. Rio’s current storefront emphasizes its Eco Plus range, while the Arc’s present stock, firmware support, app availability, regional electrical compatibility, and warranty position remain unclear.
That makes the Rio Arc a compelling older product rather than an automatic current recommendation. Consider it only when the seller can confirm the exact model, voltage, plug, warranty, return arrangements, and continued software support.

What is the Rio Arc?
The Rio Arc is a standalone electric panel heater, not a thermostat accessory and not simply a conventional heater operated by a smart plug. It has built-in Wi-Fi, a curved glass front, an integrated display, physical controls, and native support for Apple HomeKit. Rio also advertised Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility, although platform availability can vary by region and current support should be confirmed.
Two power ratings were reported: 1,500W and 2,000W. AppleInsider reviewed the 1,500W version, while Rio’s specifications for the 2,000W model list approximate dimensions of 820 × 450 × 100mm and claimed coverage of up to 24m². That coverage figure is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee: insulation, drafts, ceiling height, outdoor temperature, and the target room temperature all matter.

The heater can be wall-mounted using the included kit or placed on included aluminium feet. It is best understood as a single-room heater for a bedroom, office, or similar space—not a replacement for a whole-home heating system.
Design and installation
The Arc’s main visual appeal is its curved glass front. Contemporary coverage described it as a more elegant alternative to the usual utilitarian portable heater, with black, white, grey, and red finishes reported at launch. The built-in display shows operating information and, during setup, can show the HomeKit pairing code.
Wall mounting saves floor space and can give the heater a cleaner appearance. Freestanding installation is more flexible, particularly for renters or rooms where drilling is undesirable. The fixed power cable was identified as a drawback in contemporary coverage because it limits placement and can make cable routing more noticeable.
AppleInsider also reported cosmetic concerns on its test unit, including sharp-feeling feet and a visible display edge on the dark model. These are reviewer observations rather than evidence that every unit has the same defect, but they are worth checking if buying old stock.
For a construction or renovation project, installation should account for clearances, outlet position, wall structure, cable routing, and local electrical requirements before the heater is mounted. Do not conceal or alter the fixed cable unless the current manufacturer instructions and a qualified electrician explicitly permit the work.
How well does it heat?
The 1,500W Arc was reported by AppleInsider to heat a roughly 250-square-foot home office effectively. That is useful real-world evidence, but it was one reviewer’s experience under particular room conditions, not an independently verified heating rating for every room.
A panel heater generally delivers heat more quietly than a fan heater because it does not need to blow air around the room. The trade-off is that it may feel less immediate for spot heating. Neither the 1,500W nor 2,000W model produces unusually efficient heat in the sense of creating more heat than its electrical input: resistance heating converts nearly all consumed electricity into heat. Running cost is therefore driven mainly by wattage, runtime, thermostat cycling, and the local electricity rate.

Actual consumption over a day will depend on how often the thermostat switches the element on and off. The Arc should therefore be sized for the room and used with sensible schedules rather than treated as a low-cost whole-house heating solution.
What HomeKit adds
The Arc’s strongest feature is direct HomeKit integration. Contemporary testing reported that it could be paired with Apple’s Home app, assigned to a room, and controlled alongside other Home accessories without relying on a third-party smart plug.
That enables practical routines such as:
- Turning the heater on before entering a home office.
- Scheduling heating around work, sleep, or morning routines.
- Adding it to scenes such as “Good Morning” or “Office.”
- Using Siri to activate the heater or adjust its supported controls.
- Using occupancy, motion, door, or temperature sensors as automation inputs.
- Controlling it remotely when the Apple Home hub and network are correctly configured.
HomeKit does not automatically turn the Arc into a sophisticated room-by-room climate-control system. The controls visible in Apple Home depend on the heater’s firmware and HomeKit implementation. HomeKit News noted that not every advertised option was necessarily exposed through HomeKit, so buyers should not assume that every feature in Rio’s app will appear in Apple Home.
Setup: HomeKit and Wi-Fi
The basic setup path reported by AppleInsider is:
- Plug in and switch on the heater.
- Wait for the pairing code to appear on the built-in display.
- Open the Apple Home app.
- Scan or manually enter the HomeKit code.
- Assign the heater to a room and give it a clear name.
- Test manual control and a Siri command before creating automations.
Rio’s FAQ says that Wi-Fi is required for pairing and that the Arc uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Bluetooth was described in the technical specifications as being used for pairing, rather than as the normal control connection. A phone connected only to a 5GHz network, an isolated guest network, or a router with unsuitable device-isolation settings may complicate setup.

Use the current manual and firmware instructions where available. The accessible Arc manual is from 2020, so its reset and pairing steps should not be treated as definitive for every later unit.
The Rio app is a separate ownership requirement
Native HomeKit control does not necessarily eliminate the Rio app. Rio says the app is used for firmware updates, and AppleInsider found that the heater had to be added to the Rio app separately. The review described that process as unintuitive.
This creates an important distinction:
- Apple Home: everyday control, Siri, scenes, automations, and remote access through the Home environment.
- Rio’s app: manufacturer-specific management and firmware updates.
- Physical controls: local operation remains possible from the heater itself.
The current availability and iOS compatibility of the Arc app, as well as the present firmware-maintenance situation, were not established by the available material. The heater may continue to provide basic local or HomeKit control if the app becomes unavailable, but future updates, re-pairing, or troubleshooting could become more difficult. That software dependency is one of the Arc’s biggest long-term risks.
Known setup and control problems
HomeKit pairing fails
Check that the heater is powered on and in its pairing state, use a 2.4GHz-capable network, and follow the current manual. If the heater was previously configured, remove stale entries from the relevant HomeKit or Rio app setup where appropriate. Then power-cycle the heater and router and try again.

Do not factory-reset immediately. Record the existing configuration first, and use the current manufacturer instructions because the exact reset procedure has not been verified here. AppleInsider reported that generating a new Rio app pairing code involved holding the top button, but also noted that the documentation did not explain this clearly.
Apple Home says “off” while the heater still feels warm
These are not necessarily contradictory states. A resistance heater’s panel can remain warm after the element stops drawing power. Distinguish between residual heat, active element operation, the state reported by the smart-home system, and the physical mains switch. Turning the mains switch off can disconnect the Arc from Wi-Fi and HomeKit altogether.
Older user reports also described HomeKit state-synchronization problems. Those reports are anecdotal and should not be treated as proof of a current firmware defect.

Celsius and Fahrenheit
AppleInsider reported that its U.S. test unit initially displayed Celsius, even though HomeKit and Siri could use local units. Rio reportedly planned a firmware update for Fahrenheit display support. This was a historical issue; without confirmation of current firmware, buyers should not assume that it has definitely been resolved.
U.S. and international compatibility
The Arc originated as a UK product. Contemporary specifications reported 220–240V and 50Hz operation for the 2,000W model, and the reviewed unit included a UK plug. Coverage also discussed a planned U.S. version, but that does not establish that every Arc offered today is suitable for North American use.
Before buying an imported unit, confirm all of the following:
- Voltage and frequency.
- Plug type and cable specification.
- Electrical certification required for the installation location.
- Whether the exact model is intended for residential use in your country.
- Shipping costs, import duties, returns, and warranty coverage.
- Regional HomeKit and app support.
- Availability of replacement parts and technical support.
Do not use a travel adapter or voltage converter as a substitute for a correctly rated North American heater. A plug adapter changes the physical connection; it does not make an incompatible heating appliance electrically suitable.
Rio’s Arc specifications also refer to CE marking and Lot 20 compliance. Those designations are not substitutes for checking the certification and electrical rules that apply in your own jurisdiction.

Contemporary coverage reported built-in safety features, but smart control does not remove ordinary electric-heater precautions. Keep curtains, bedding, clothing, paper, and furniture away from the heater. Do not cover it, use a damaged cable, or connect it to an unsuitable outlet.
Avoid extension cords unless the manufacturer explicitly permits them and the cord is correctly rated for the heater’s load. Remote operation is a convenience, not proof that unattended operation is safe. Follow the current manual, building requirements, and local electrical and fire codes.
The 2,000W specification lists IP24 protection. That should not be interpreted as automatic permission for installation in a bathroom or other wet area. Check the current instructions and local rules before installing any heater near water.
Availability in 2026
This is the decisive issue for a current buyer. AppleInsider’s hands-on review was published on December 15, 2021. Its reported U.S. price of $291, and HomeKit News’s reported UK price of £199, are historical figures—not current prices.
As of the research snapshot dated August 16, 2026, Rio’s storefront prominently showed Eco Plus ceramic-core smart radiators at £249 for 1,000W, £269 for 1,500W, and £299 for 2,000W, with availability labels including “Coming Soon” and “Sale Coming Soon.” The Arc collection and Rio’s About page still associate the company with the Arc and HomeKit, but the current storefront does not clearly establish an in-stock Arc listing.
That does not prove that Rio has discontinued the Arc. It does mean buyers should treat availability as unclear and ask Rio or the seller for written confirmation before paying. The Eco Plus range appears to be the company’s more prominent current product family, but Rio’s FAQ associates that range with the Tuya app. The available material does not establish that Eco Plus provides the same native HomeKit experience as the Arc.
Who should consider the Rio Arc?
Consider it if you specifically want direct HomeKit control, prefer a quiet-looking panel heater, need heating for one room, and can verify a correctly rated regional model from a seller with a credible warranty and return policy. You must also accept that the product is older and may depend on a separate Rio app for firmware updates.
Avoid it if you need guaranteed current iOS support, clear in-stock availability, independently verified thermostat accuracy, the lowest-cost heat, rapid fan-assisted spot heating, or a product with well-documented long-term support. Avoid any listing that cannot prove the voltage, plug, certification, seller identity, warranty, and return address.
Buyers who only need remote on/off control should not assume a generic smart plug is appropriate for a high-wattage heater. Any alternative control method must be explicitly rated for the appliance load and installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s safety guidance and local electrical rules.
Verdict
As a 2021 product, the Rio Arc was impressive: attractive, effective in the reviewer’s office, and unusually well integrated with Apple HomeKit. Its direct smart-home support was more useful than simply attaching a plug to a conventional heater.
As a 2026 purchase, it is a cautious maybe: only proceed after verifying current stock, regional electrical compatibility, warranty and returns, Rio app access, firmware support, and the exact HomeKit behavior of the unit being sold. If those checks fail, the Arc’s elegant design and historical HomeKit credentials are not enough to outweigh the support and availability risk.
