Short answer: the $54.99 Ring Battery Doorbell offer was a real Amazon promotion reported on May 27, 2025, but it is not a price you should assume is still available. Ring’s current entry-level product is the Battery Doorbell, 2nd Gen, listed at $99.99 on its product page; Ring’s catalog has also recently shown a $69.99 promotion. The bigger catch is ownership cost: basic live monitoring works without a plan, but reviewing missed events normally requires Ring Protect.
The $55 price was historical, not a permanent Ring price
The deal that inspired this headline was reported on May 27, 2025: Amazon listed a Ring Battery Doorbell at $54.99, down from a reported $99.99. That article described a battery-powered model with 1536p HD video, an approximately square view designed for head-to-toe coverage, color night vision, two-way talk, custom motion zones and optional wired power (original deal coverage).
That promotion should be treated as expired unless a retailer listing confirms otherwise on the day you buy. Ring’s current catalog uses generation names, including Battery Doorbell, 2nd Gen, so a listing that simply says “Ring Battery Doorbell” may not be the same hardware described in the 2025 deal. Match the retailer’s model number, generation, resolution and included accessories before assuming a $55 listing is equivalent.
What the doorbell actually does
- Live View: Open the Ring app to check the entrance remotely.
- Motion and doorbell alerts: Get notified when the device detects activity or someone presses the button.
- Two-way talk: Speak with a visitor through the app without opening the door.
- Package visibility: A taller or squarer frame can show a delivery near the ground as well as a visitor’s face.
- Battery installation: It can work where there is no usable doorbell wiring, but the battery must be removed and recharged periodically.
- Optional wiring: A wired connection may reduce charging interruptions, but check electrical compatibility rather than assuming any existing doorbell wires will work.
- Alexa integration: The original deal report described announcements and viewing on Echo Show and Fire TV devices. Verify compatibility for the exact generation you purchase.
“Head-to-toe” is a useful field-of-view design, not a promise of complete porch surveillance. Camera height and angle still determine whether a package, side approach or walkway is visible. It can document activity and provide alerts; it cannot guarantee that a package will not be stolen.

What works without Ring Protect?
Ring says a compatible doorbell can provide real-time notifications, Live View and two-way communication without a subscription (Ring’s doorbell overview). That is enough for someone who normally answers alerts as they arrive.
The limitation is important: without a compatible plan, missed motion events are not normally saved for later review, and you cannot use Ring’s standard cloud tools to save or share those recordings. If you miss a notification because your phone is away, the battery is dead or Wi-Fi drops, there may be no footage to retrieve.

For one doorbell, Solo is usually the relevant comparison. It includes up to 180 days of video event history, person, package and vehicle alerts, extended Live View, Device Modes and related features. Ring says an eligible device receives a 30-day trial after setup unless the account already has a subscription at that location; when the trial or an existing plan ends, stored recordings become unavailable if you do not subscribe (Ring Protect details).

The ownership math
Using the historical $54.99 hardware price and the displayed annual Solo price:
- First year: $54.99 + $49.99 = approximately $104.98 before tax.
- Two years: approximately $154.97 before tax, assuming the same annual plan price.
Those are illustrations, not guaranteed future prices. They show why the “$55 doorbell” is only a $55 solution if you are satisfied with live alerts and do not need a recording history. The subscription nearly doubles the original hardware outlay in year one.

Who is a good fit?
Renters and battery-powered installations
Battery operation can avoid electrical work, which is useful at a rental or apartment entrance. Get landlord or building approval first, use a mounting method that complies with your lease, and make sure you can safely access the unit for charging. A high-mounted device in a locked communal area may be impractical even if installation is technically allowed.

The taller framing is particularly useful when deliveries sit below face level. Position the camera toward the threshold and approach, not an entire busy sidewalk, and remember that visibility depends on mounting angle.

Alexa households
Owners already using Ring or Alexa may benefit from shared alerts and compatible smart displays. Confirm the exact doorbell’s current compatibility before buying on the assumption that every Ring feature works on every generation.

- Buyers who need recordings without recurring fees: Ring’s normal no-plan experience does not provide the same event history as Protect.
- People unwilling to recharge: Motion frequency, Live View use, Wi-Fi strength, temperature and settings all affect battery life. There is no single reliable duration to promise.
- Homes with weak entryway Wi-Fi: A camera cannot alert or upload reliably through an unstable connection.
- High-traffic entrances: Sidewalks, roads, trees and shared hallways can create alert overload. Narrow motion zones and reduce sensitivity.
- Local-storage advocates: Consider a system designed around local storage rather than Ring’s cloud-history model.
- Anyone expecting a complete security system: A doorbell is not continuous monitoring or a guarantee against theft.
Installation, privacy and reliability checklist
- Check the retailer listing against the exact Ring generation and included battery or mounting hardware.
- Confirm Wi-Fi coverage at the door before final mounting.
- Angle the camera to include the step and delivery area while limiting unnecessary views of neighbors, windows and shared spaces.
- Set privacy zones, narrow motion zones and enable only useful alert types.
- Plan how and when you will recharge the battery; consider a compatible wired solution if access is difficult.
- Use strong account authentication and review Ring’s current privacy controls and local recording rules.
- Remember that even with Protect, outages, depleted batteries, poor lighting, bad positioning or excluded motion zones can produce missed events.
Apartment residents should also check building rules and local law, especially where audio recording or a shared hallway is involved. Privacy practices and legal requirements can change, so consult Ring’s current policies rather than relying on old summaries.
Alternatives by ownership model
Compare these products by storage and maintenance model, not just sticker price:
- Blink Video Doorbell: A lower-cost Amazon ecosystem option; check its current battery, cloud and local-storage requirements.
- Google Nest Doorbell: A natural fit for Google Home users. Compare battery versus wired versions, event history and AI features.
- Arlo Video Doorbell: Worth considering for different smart-home integrations and alert tiers; storage and subscription rules vary by model.
- Eufy Video Doorbell: Relevant if local storage or reduced cloud dependence is the priority. Verify the specific storage hardware and privacy controls.
- Wired or local-storage systems: They can reduce battery maintenance or recurring cloud costs, but may require more installation work or a higher initial spend.
Do not compare competitor prices without checking current listings; promotions and included storage hardware change frequently.
Verdict
The historical $54.99 Ring deal was compelling for inexpensive, battery-powered live monitoring, especially if seeing packages matters and you already use Alexa. It is not proof that a comparable doorbell is still $55, nor is “no subscription required” the same as full functionality. Before buying, verify the exact generation and current price, then decide whether live alerts are enough. If you need to review missed visitors or deliveries, budget Ring Protect Solo and treat the subscription—not the sale price—as the central ownership decision.
