Ring Video Doorbell 4 is the better of these two older battery doorbells: it adds Color Pre-Roll, Quick Replies, and a longer security-update window. But neither is a current-generation model. Buy a Doorbell 3 only at a substantial discount; if a Doorbell 4 is priced near a current Ring battery doorbell, compare the newer model before you buy.

What the Doorbell 4 adds—and what it does not
Color Pre-Roll gives motion alerts more context
Color Pre-Roll captures activity immediately before the motion trigger, so a clip may show how someone approached, whether a vehicle entered the frame first, or why a person is already leaving when the alert begins. It can help explain a missed or late-looking event. Ring’s current Doorbell 4 specifications confirm the feature but do not state a universal clip duration, so do not buy it expecting a particular number of seconds.
Quick Replies can answer when you cannot
The Doorbell 4 supports Quick Replies, which let you use a preset response instead of speaking live. The Doorbell 3 offers two-way audio but not this listed feature.

It is not a sharper camera
Neither model is a 2K or 4K doorbell: both are specified for 1080p HD. Actual footage also depends on lighting and backlighting, Wi-Fi and upload conditions, compression, lens cleanliness, mounting angle, subject movement, and nighttime conditions. Do not pay a large premium for the 4 on the assumption that it produces higher-resolution video.
Battery, installation, and accessory fit
Battery life has no dependable universal runtime
Ring describes the Doorbell 4 as having improved battery life over its predecessor, but does not give a universal number of months. Motion volume, clip length, Live View use, Wi-Fi signal, cold temperatures, detection settings, and battery age can all affect runtime. For a used unit, an aged or mismatched battery may matter more than the model difference.
Ring lists an operating range down to –5°F for both models; that is an operating specification, not a promise of typical battery performance in extreme cold. Plan for more frequent charging in cold weather or at a busy entrance.
Matching dimensions do not guarantee every accessory fits
Both doorbells are listed at 5.1 × 2.4 × 1.1 inches and use a removable Quick Release Battery Pack. That makes the changeover physically familiar, but verify the exact bracket, faceplate, corner kit, solar accessory, battery model, and security screws rather than assuming everything transfers. Ring’s device compatibility list includes both models for low-voltage transformer connections.

Check the wiring instead of assuming hardwired means battery-free
These are battery doorbells even when connected to an existing doorbell system. Hardwiring does not automatically mean that battery maintenance is eliminated; installation and operating conditions matter. Before installation, verify the transformer voltage and VA rating, that the wiring is live, that the battery is installed, and how the device reports its power source in Ring’s Device Health screen. Ring lists 8–24VAC for the Doorbell 3 and 8–24VAC, 40VA maximum, 50/60Hz for the Doorbell 4. Follow the device instructions and local electrical requirements.
Motion alerts, Wi-Fi, and recordings
Both models provide Advanced Motion Detection and customizable zones. Neither has an official specification advantage for basic motion controls or Wi-Fi: both support 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11 b/g/n, and Ring recommends at least 2Mbps upload and download for optimal performance. A strong signal by the router does not prove the signal is adequate at the entry; 5GHz may have less range and wall penetration than 2.4GHz.
- Check signal and connection details in the Ring app’s Device Health screen.
- Test the other Wi-Fi band, and check upload speed near the doorbell.
- Move a router or mesh node closer if practical; avoid placing the device behind metal.
- Review motion zones and event settings if excessive activity is draining the battery.
- If credentials changed, reconnect the doorbell to Wi-Fi; rebooting the router and device may help resolve a connection problem.
Receiving an alert is not the same as having a saved recording to replay. Ring says its doorbell cameras can be used without a subscription, but Ring Protect adds video history and other features, including Package Alerts and Doorbell Calls where supported. Ring lists up to 180 days of video history for applicable plans. At the displayed Solo rate, one year of annual service is $49.99 and three years is $149.97; at the monthly rate, those periods total $59.88 and $179.64. Add the plan cost to the doorbell price when comparing a used bargain with a new device. A free, limited experience may suit someone who only needs live interaction and alerts, but it is not equivalent to cloud video history.

Choose the Doorbell 4 if prices are close
- You want Color Pre-Roll to see context before motion triggers.
- You will use Quick Replies.
- You prefer Ring’s stated battery-life improvement.
- You value the longer published security-update window.
- You can verify battery condition, registration, and return protection on a used or refurbished unit.
Choose the Doorbell 3 only as a clear bargain
- It is substantially cheaper than the 4.
- Ordinary 1080p live view, night vision, motion alerts, and two-way audio meet your needs.
- You already own compatible accessories or need a temporary or secondary doorbell.
Skip both when a current model is close in price
During the August 18, 2026 check of Ring’s U.S. store, the Battery Doorbell 2nd Gen was displayed at $69.99, discounted from $99.99; the Battery Doorbell Plus 2nd Gen at $119.99, discounted from $179.99; and the Battery Doorbell Pro 2nd Gen at $249.99. Promotions can change, so compare the live Ring doorbell lineup before buying.

Choose by the feature you actually need: a removable battery, newer image capability, or a lower upfront price. For a new installation with reliable existing wiring, Ring also lists a Wired Doorbell 2nd Gen at $49.99, shown discounted from $79.99 on the same U.S. lineup page; it is not a fit for someone who needs battery operation.

Used-device checks before you pay
A low listing price can hide the cost of replacing a tired battery or missing parts. Before committing, make sure the seller offers a return window and check these points:
- Ask whether the device can be registered to your Ring account; confirm it is not still linked to another account.
- Inspect the battery, charging port, and contacts for damage or corrosion, and confirm the pack is compatible.
- Check for the mounting bracket, security screws, and any wedges or faceplates your installation needs.
- After setup, review Device Health and test Live View, motion notifications, and two-way audio at the actual mounting location.
- Do not treat a seller’s claim that it was “hardwired” as proof that the battery is healthy or unnecessary.
Bottom line on Ring Video Doorbell 3 vs. 4
The Doorbell 4 is the stronger legacy choice because it adds useful pre-event context and Quick Replies, has Ring’s stated battery improvement, and is listed for security updates two years longer. The Doorbell 3 makes sense only when its discount is substantial and its basic feature set is enough. If the 4 approaches the price of a current battery model, compare current options instead of paying a premium for an older generation.
