An old satellite dish can make a useful birdbath, shallow planter, garden feature, or technical reflector—but the right project depends on its size, material, condition, and mounting. Small residential dishes are usually best for lightweight garden projects. Large legacy dishes need more careful planning because they are heavy, awkward in wind, and harder to support safely. If the dish is damaged or a project would take more work than it is worth, check local reuse and recycling options before sending it to the trash.
First, identify the dish and check its condition
Modern residential satellite dishes are often about 18–24 inches across and relatively light. Older dishes can be several feet wide, made of solid sheet or mesh, and attached to substantial pedestal or actuator hardware. Size is not the only difference: a metal reflector, a molded composite dish, and a mixed-material assembly may need different preparation and may be treated differently by recyclers.
Before choosing a project, look for cracks, deep corrosion, loose joints, bent sections, flaking coating, missing fasteners, and sharp edges. A weak reflector or bracket should not carry a water-filled basin or wet soil. Solid dishes offer a more continuous surface but can be heavier and catch more wind; mesh may be lighter or easier to modify, but small objects and soil may fall through it.
If the dish is still in place, photograph it before dismantling and consider whether a hobbyist, school, makerspace, or amateur-radio club could use it intact. Remove the receiver electronics and cables separately where practical. Keep useful poles, clamps, brackets, and fasteners; they may be more valuable for a garden build or antenna experiment than the reflector itself.

Remove it safely
A roof- or high-wall-mounted dish is a removal job, not a casual craft project. Do not climb onto a roof or work near overhead electrical lines without the right training and equipment. A large dish can be awkward to handle and act like a sail in wind. If it is inaccessible, rusted into place, or too large to control safely, use a qualified installer or other appropriate contractor.
Best easy projects
Make a birdbath
A birdbath is one of the simplest uses for an intact dish: its shallow shape can hold a modest amount of water, and a pole or sturdy pedestal can support it. Connecticut’s environmental agency lists birdbaths among possible satellite-dish reuse projects (Connecticut DEEP reuse and disposal guidance).
- Remove the LNB, feed arm, cables, and loose or protruding hardware that could injure wildlife.
- Wash away dirt, grease, and flaking material. Check the basin and edges for corrosion, holes, or sharp metal; smooth or safely cover sharp edges.
- Choose a stable, weather-resistant support and secure the dish with corrosion-resistant hardware. Do not assume the original satellite bracket is adequate for a permanent water-filled basin.
- Level the basin enough to hold shallow water. If its surface is too slick or steep, add a few securely placed stones so small birds have a foothold.
- Put it somewhere accessible for cleaning, with a clear view around it and less opportunity for cats to hide nearby.
Empty, scrub, and refill it frequently. A birdbath that cannot be emptied or cleaned can become a stagnant, dirty basin. If the dish leaks slightly, that may be manageable if it can still be cleaned and replenished; a badly perforated or flaking basin is a poor choice.

Build a shallow planter
A dish can hold succulents, herbs, annual flowers, or other shallow-rooted plants. It is not a deep pot: avoid trees, shrubs, or plants that need substantial root space. Before adding potting mix, make several drainage holes at the lowest points. Without drainage, the dish can become waterlogged rather than a healthy planter.
Use lightweight potting mix and keep the finished weight within what the reflector, bracket, and support can safely bear—wet soil weighs much more than dry soil. A liner is an option only if it still permits controlled drainage. Anchor the planter against wind and tipping, especially if it is elevated. Metal in full sun may heat up, so consider the location and the plants’ needs. If the existing coating is peeling, do not assume it is suitable for contact with soil or edible plants; follow the coating manufacturer’s directions for the substrate and intended use.
Turn it into garden art or a mosaic
A dish’s curved profile makes a natural canvas for exterior paint, a celestial or retro-technology motif, a garden sign, or a sculptural feature. A large dish can become a dramatic focal point; a small one may work better as a wall plaque or hanging decoration. Reusing the original pole and feed arm can add structure, but remove or cover sharp ends.

For tile, mirror, glass, or ceramic decoration, use materials and adhesive or grout rated for outdoor exposure and the relevant substrate. Design for rain and freeze-thaw weather, and eliminate razor-like edges. Shiny pieces can reflect or focus sunlight: do not aim them toward windows, vehicles, siding, dry vegetation, or other places where concentrated light could cause damage or fire.

Make a bird feeder—with cleaning and drainage in mind
A dish can serve as a shallow seed tray, platform feeder, or base for fruit or suet, but food left in a rain-filled bowl can spoil. Add drainage holes, consider a cover, and design the assembly so it can be taken apart and cleaned. Keep water separate from food so spilled seed does not sit in a dirty water basin. Strong support matters: feed, rain, and visiting birds all add load. For most households, a birdbath is simpler to keep sanitary.
More technical ideas
Use it as a directional antenna reflector
A satellite dish may be adaptable for amateur-radio experiments, a point-to-point wireless link, or receiving weak signals, but the reflector alone is not a working antenna. The feed element must suit the target frequency and be positioned at the appropriate focal point; polarization, connector, cable losses, aiming, and local transmitter rules also matter. The original LNB and feed assembly were designed for particular satellite services, so they are not automatically suitable for Wi-Fi, amateur radio, or terrestrial TV.

Treat this as an experiment, not a plug-and-play way to extend household Wi-Fi. Results depend on the dish shape and surface, feed design and placement, cable, and alignment. Measure performance with appropriate equipment rather than assuming a particular gain or range. A rigid, intact dish and a hobbyist who understands frequency and feed geometry make the best candidates.
Solar heat: possible, but not a casual craft
A parabolic dish can concentrate sunlight and produce heat; it does not become a photovoltaic solar panel. Generating electricity would require separate solar cells and the associated electrical system. Connecticut DEEP lists solar cookers as one possible reuse, but a repurposed dish is an unpredictable concentrator, not a purpose-built cooker.
The focal region can become hot enough to cause burns, damage eyes, melt materials, or ignite nearby objects. The focal point depends on the dish geometry and orientation, and reflected light may be scattered or directed unpredictably. Only consider an experiment in a controlled, noncombustible outdoor area with suitable eye and heat protection; keep children and pets away, supervise it continuously, and never leave the dish aimed at the sun unattended. A purpose-built solar cooker is generally safer and more predictable.

Other uses for a large dish and its hardware
A sturdy, large dish might be used as a decorative basin, water feature, outdoor table surface, or sculptural planter—but each use needs a support designed for the load, drainage or sealing appropriate to the purpose, and anchoring against wind. Do not fill it with water or soil until you know the structure can carry that weight. A pole, feed arm, or adjustable bracket can also be reused for a sign, sculpture, planter support, or antenna mount if it is sound and securely installed.
Although novelty lists sometimes suggest using a dish as a sled, a curved metal object can have sharp edges, unpredictable speed, and poor steering. It is not a responsible default use.

When recycling or disposal is the better choice
Choose reuse only if the dish can be removed, supported, and maintained safely. A badly corroded or fractured reflector, weak mounting hardware, a location exposed to severe wind, or a project that requires expensive structural work can make recycling or local reuse the better option.

Ask your original provider whether it wants the equipment returned rather than assuming it will take the physical dish. Check your municipality’s transfer station and local scrap-metal recyclers before transporting it; some recyclers accept metal dishes, but Onondaga County’s waste agency specifically advises calling first (OCRRA satellite-dish disposal guidance). The reflector and pole may be scrap metal, while a receiver, powered motor, power supply, or other electronics may need a separate e-waste route. Local giveaway groups, schools, makerspaces, community gardens, and amateur-radio clubs may also want usable parts.
For general reuse and recycling guidance, the EPA encourages reducing waste, reusing items, and recycling where appropriate (EPA recycling guidance; EPA: What you can do). Before permanently installing a reused dish as a structure or feature, check applicable local building, zoning, homeowners’ association, or historic-district rules. Rules that may apply to satellite reception equipment do not automatically exempt every new structure or reuse project.
