Powercore is Rack Robotics’ desktop-scale wire electrical-discharge machining (EDM) project: a retrofit-style system that uses controlled electrical sparks to cut small, electrically conductive workpieces. It is a specialized fabrication tool, not a general-purpose metal cutter—and not a substitute for the saws, plasma systems, laser cutters or CNC machines used for most construction work.

The original Kickstarter campaign ran from March 2 to April 1, 2023, and is closed. Rack Robotics’ store listed Powercore V3 for $1,000 but marked it sold out when checked on August 18, 2026. The store also showed its Wire EDM Starter Kit and Betta Wire Kit as sold out, so current availability should be confirmed directly with the company. Kickstarter campaign · Rack Robotics store

What Powercore is—and what EDM means

EDM stands for electrical-discharge machining. Rather than cutting with a toothed blade or rotating bit, EDM removes material from a conductive workpiece through a sequence of electrical discharges. Powercore applies that process to a compact, 3D-printer-style motion platform, positioning an electrode or wire along a programmed path.

The key distinction is that the electrode does not have to push through the metal like a milling cutter. That reduces mechanical cutting forces and makes a lightweight motion system more plausible as a metal-cutting platform. It does not make the process heat-free: sparks create localized heat, and the cut surface and edge are affected by the process.

In simplified terms, the machine brings an electrode close to a conductive workpiece, creates electrical pulses across a small gap, and removes tiny amounts of material with each discharge. The machine advances along the intended contour while dielectric fluid in a vat helps manage the discharge and carry away debris. The fluid, electrical setup and workholding are part of the process, not optional accessories.

How the desktop retrofit is assembled

The original concept was presented as a conversion of a compatible 3D-printer-style machine. The printer’s heated bed and print head are removed; the retrofit adds an EDM power supply, electrode tooling and holders, a dielectric-fluid vat, and a way to secure the workpiece. Some structural or mounting parts are printed. The historical Kickstarter description called the power supply open-source, but that alone does not establish that every component, file or part of the system is covered by an open license.

That description should not be read as universal printer compatibility. A frame that resembles an Ender 3 does not prove that every Ender 3 model—or any arbitrary Cartesian printer—has the required travel, rigidity, mounting points, grounding and electrical characteristics. Check Rack Robotics’ documentation for the specific machine and configuration before treating a donor printer as suitable.

The original Kickstarter package was described as including a power supply, brass electrodes, aluminum stock, electrode holders and workholding; users also had to print some parts. That is historical campaign information, not a current package specification. Rack Robotics now presents a product family that includes Powercore V3, a Wire EDM Starter Kit and a Betta Wire Kit. Confirm exactly what is included, what donor hardware is required, and what consumables are needed before making a purchase decision.

What it can cut—and the limits of the reported figures

EDM requires an electrically conductive workpiece. Powercore is therefore not for wood, plastic or other nonconductive materials. Metals can also behave differently depending on their composition, thickness, surface condition, electrical connection and process settings; a general claim that a machine “cuts metal” does not establish equal performance on every alloy.

Hackster’s coverage, reporting figures from Rack Robotics, gave a standard stock size of about 3 × 3 inches, a reported demonstration cut through material as thick as 4 mm, a recommended thickness of below 1 mm, and an approximate cutting rate of 10 mm per minute. These are reported capabilities, not independent benchmark results or guaranteed specifications. In particular, the 4-mm demonstration should not be mistaken for the recommended everyday thickness. Hackster’s coverage of Powercore

At a nominal 10 mm/min, a 100-mm contour would take roughly 10 minutes of cutting time, before allowing for setup, piercing, repositioning, tuning or interruptions. That simple calculation illustrates why throughput matters: even when a cut is feasible, the process may be impractical for a job that needs many parts quickly.

The available reporting does not establish quantified tolerances, surface-finish values or repeatability figures. EDM can be suited to delicate profiles and low-force cutting, but the result depends on the particular machine, electrode or wire arrangement, material, flushing and settings. Do not assume a specific dimensional accuracy or edge finish without a relevant specification and test on the intended setup.

Where it could fit in a construction workflow

For a construction contractor, fabricator or maintenance shop, Powercore is best understood as an experimental, small-part prototyping option—not a replacement for jobsite cutting equipment or a production metal shop. It may appeal to a technically confident maker working on small conductive parts where low cutting force matters more than speed, such as a delicate profile, a small plate or a prototype bracket. Whether it is suitable for a load-bearing or safety-critical component is a separate engineering and qualification question; the reported project figures do not establish that use.

It is a poor match for large panels, thick structural plate, repetitive production, rapid roughing, or work that needs a large machine envelope. It also cannot machine nonconductive materials and does not provide the broad capabilities of a spindle-based mill, such as conventional drilling and pocketing. For a one-off construction part, a local machine shop, laser-cutting service, CNC service or wire-EDM bureau may be more practical than acquiring and maintaining a specialized retrofit.

How it compares with other cutting methods

Process Where it commonly fits How Powercore differs
CNC router or mill Mechanical machining, including drilling and pockets, with suitable tooling and workholding. EDM applies little mechanical cutting force, but is slower and less versatile for general machining.
Laser cutter Fast profiling of materials and thicknesses suitable for the particular laser. Powercore targets conductive-metal cutting at small scale; it is not a general-purpose thermal cutter and should not be expected to match laser throughput. A low-power hobby laser generally cannot cut ordinary metal sheet effectively; fiber lasers are a different, more production-oriented category.
Plasma cutter Fast cutting of conductive metal, particularly where higher speed and thicker stock matter. Powercore is aimed at small, more delicate work, not plasma-level speed or thickness capacity.
Industrial wire EDM Established industrial work requiring production equipment, process controls and a larger or more capable setup. Powercore brings the process to a desktop maker platform, with a much more limited work envelope and less-established, less-turnkey operating context.

These are process-level comparisons, not a claim that one method wins every job. Material, thickness, geometry, required finish, tolerances, available equipment and production quantity all affect the choice. A laser or machining service may be faster or more convenient; EDM’s particular appeal is cutting conductive material without conventional tool pressure.

Setup, safety and maintenance are part of ownership

“Desktop” describes scale, not the risk profile of an office appliance. Powercore’s concept involves a liquid-filled vat, electrical energy, conductive components and metal debris. The donor printer frame may not have been designed for EDM operation. Workholding, electrical isolation and grounding, fluid condition, debris removal and spill management all need to be addressed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before operating any configuration, use Rack Robotics’ current safety documentation for the exact product and setup. Confirm the specified dielectric fluid, electrical and grounding requirements, workpiece connection, maintenance and disposal procedures. Do not assume that a printer enclosure makes the retrofit safe, that generic printer instructions apply, or that the machine can be left unattended. The available project coverage does not establish unattended-operation approval or provide quantified safety limits.

Campaign history and current availability

Powercore’s Kickstarter campaign sought $5,000 and raised $192,083 from 509 backers between March 2 and April 1, 2023. Hackster reported a $399 “Kickstarter Special” reward at the time. That was a historical crowdfunding price, not a current retail offer or evidence that the original package can still be ordered.

As checked on August 18, 2026, Rack Robotics’ store listed Powercore V3 at $1,000, the Wire EDM Starter Kit at $1,200, and the Betta Wire Kit at $3,000; all were marked sold out. These listings do not establish when stock will return or what a buyer would receive today. Check the official store or contact Rack Robotics directly for current inventory, compatibility, package contents, support and fulfillment information.

Who should consider Powercore?

  • Potential fit: a maker or prototype shop working with small, conductive parts; low cutting force is useful; slow cutting is acceptable; and the user is comfortable with machine modification, setup and fluid management.
  • Probably not a fit: the job needs large-format or thick-stock cutting, fast throughput, production quantities, nonconductive materials, turnkey operation, or established industrial process performance.
  • For construction purchasing: compare the total effort and risk of a retrofit—including donor-machine compatibility and operating requirements—with outsourcing the part to a qualified fabrication shop. A successful small-part demonstration is not, by itself, a specification for structural or safety-critical work.
