The Philips Hue Play wall washer is a freestanding color-and-white smart lamp that casts a broad wash of light onto the wall near a TV. As of August 18, 2026, Philips Hue’s U.S. listings show about $229.99 for one lamp and $399.99 for a two-pack. Those prices do not include a Hue Bridge or, if your television cannot run the Hue Sync TV app, a separate HDMI Sync Box. The lamp launched in June 2025, so it is no longer a newly announced product.
What the Philips Hue Play wall washer does
This compact, vertically positioned lamp projects colored or white light across a nearby wall. Philips Hue calls its projection approach ColorCast, designed to create a broad, blended wash. The lamp can add ambient light beside a television, sofa, or bedside table; it is not a projector, a screen-mounted backlight, or a replacement for general room lighting.
Philips Hue announced the product on June 17, 2025, with original U.S. launch prices of $219.99 for one and $384.99 for two. The current price signals below are from Philips Hue’s U.S. storefront pages and can vary by configuration, color, and promotion. Signify’s launch announcement describes the original pricing and ColorCast positioning.

How much does it cost?
As of August 18, 2026, Philips Hue’s U.S. pages show different prices depending on the pack selected and where the item appears. Check the selected pack size and color at checkout; the two-pack price is not the price of one lamp.

What comes in the box—and what does not
The package includes the lamp or lamps for the selected configuration, a power supply, and an integrated LED light source; batteries are not included or needed. The two-pack uses one power supply designed to power both lamps, so consider where the cable will run if you plan to place one lamp on either side of the television.

A Hue Bridge is not included. The lamp can power on without one, but Philips Hue’s normal full-app-control and Entertainment-area workflow requires a Bridge. The Bridge is a separate purchase; Philips Hue’s entertainment page has shown a U.S. price signal of $69.99, which may change.
Can it sync with movies, TV, and games?
Yes, when paired with the required Hue equipment and a supported synchronization route. The wall washer itself does not analyze the picture. The Hue Sync TV app or HDMI Sync Box handles synchronization, and the lamps respond as part of a Hue Entertainment area.

Option 1: Hue Sync TV app
Philips Hue lists support for certain Samsung QLED TVs from 2022 onward, generally Q60 or higher, and certain LG TVs from 2024 onward running webOS24 or later. Compatibility depends on the exact TV model and software; check the television’s app store and Philips Hue’s Sync TV app compatibility information before buying. The app can synchronize supported native streaming apps, HDMI-connected devices, and game consoles, subject to the TV’s capabilities. Its price is set through the compatible TV’s app store; a universal U.S. price is not stated on Philips Hue’s information page.
Option 2: Hue Play HDMI Sync Box 8K
If your TV is not supported by the app, or you prefer an HDMI-based setup, Philips Hue’s Play HDMI Sync Box 8K is the alternative. Philips lists HDMI 2.1 support, up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz, and synchronization for up to 10 Hue lights. Its U.S. listing price is $384.99. It is separate from the wall washer and adds substantially to the system cost.

For entertainment synchronization, plan on color-capable Hue lights, a Hue Bridge, an Entertainment area configured in the Hue app, and either the compatible TV app or the Sync Box. If you only want a lamp for ordinary ambient lighting, you do not need to buy a Sync Box.

The lamp is listed for Philips Hue and integrations including Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, Matter, Samsung SmartThings, Sonos, and IFTTT. It has no listed physical on/off or color-selection button: use the Hue app, a compatible switch, or supported smart-home controls. How to place it for a TV setup
- Position it vertically beside the screen. One lamp creates an intentionally asymmetric wash from one side. For a more balanced arrangement, place two lamps on opposite sides of the TV, subject to outlet and cable placement.
- Give the light room to spread. Philips Hue’s TV-lighting guidance recommends roughly 6 to 12 inches between the TV and wall to allow diffusion. A lamp placed very close to a surface can make a smaller, more concentrated pool; projection changes with placement.
- Prefer a white or light-colored wall. Wall color and texture affect how the light appears. A colored or dark wall can alter the apparent color, so do not expect identical results in every room.
- Plan the power cable before settling on a two-lamp layout. The two-pack shares one power supply, which can constrain routing if the lamps sit far apart.

One lamp, two lamps, or another kind of backlight?
A single wall washer is the lower-cost way to add a pool of color beside a screen, or to light a corner or side wall. A two-pack makes more sense when you want light from both sides of a television. Neither configuration creates the continuous edge-to-edge glow of a television-mounted strip; one compact lamp may also leave a very wide screen unevenly covered.
Within Hue’s range, Play light bars offer directional accent lighting, while the Play gradient lightstrip is designed to run around a compatible screen and provide continuous edge lighting. A Play gradient light tube is a freestanding linear source that may suit a wider screen or console placement. These products serve different layouts, so compare their mounting, cable, and screen-size requirements on Philips Hue’s entertainment product page and lamp catalog.

- Consider it if you already use Hue, want a visible aluminum lamp rather than a hidden strip, or value flexible ambient lighting that can also join an entertainment setup.
- Choose two if balanced illumination on both sides of a TV matters and you can manage the shared power supply.
- Skip it if your main goal is the lowest-cost bias lighting, a lamp attached to the television, or full-width illumination from a single source.
- Check the synchronization cost first if reactive lighting is the reason you are buying. A compatible TV app can avoid the separate HDMI Sync Box, but unsupported TVs may require that additional hardware as well as a Bridge.
ColorCast and comparative descriptions such as wider or brighter projection are Philips Hue’s product positioning, not independent measurements in this article. The practical result will depend on placement, wall surface and color, ambient room light, and the rest of the Hue setup.
