The NiteBird smart LED strip reviewed in 2019 is best understood as an inexpensive, app-controlled accent light for the back of a monitor or TV—not a system that automatically matches the colors on screen. It offered USB power, Smart Life app controls, schedules, music response, and reported Alexa and Google Assistant support. The review’s $18.99 price is historical; current availability of that exact model is unverified.
What the NiteBird backlight is
Phandroid’s December 5, 2019 review describes a flexible RGB LED strip intended mainly for mounting behind a monitor or television. It has pre-applied adhesive and a small Wi-Fi controller powered over USB. The reviewer used the Smart Life app rather than a handheld remote, and reported support for Alexa and Google Assistant in the tested setup. Read the original review.
The review does not establish the exact model number, strip length, LED density, brightness, power draw, or waterproofing. Do not assume specifications from later NiteBird products apply to this one. Nor does the phrase “display backlight” mean the strip reads what is on the screen.

The reviewed app features included color selection, scenes, cycling and flashing effects, music response, schedules, and grouping with other compatible smart lights. These are ambient-lighting controls. The available review does not establish per-LED or zone control, measured color accuracy, latency, or automatic screen-content matching.

That distinction matters when shopping. A basic ambient strip gives the wall behind a display a colored glow. Bias lighting is a more controlled light behind the display intended to soften the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room. Reactive backlighting analyzes screen content and changes its colors to follow the picture. The review supports the first use and suggests the strip could serve the second; it does not show that the NiteBird provides the third.

- Adhere the strip to the back of the monitor or display.
- Connect the controller to a USB power source, such as a suitable port on a monitor, TV, or computer.
- Power it on and check that the strip is flashing for pairing.
- Open Smart Life, scan for lighting devices, and add the discovered strip.
- Use the app to set colors, scenes, schedules, groups, or music response.
- Link Smart Life with Google Home or Alexa if voice control is wanted.
Smart Life’s interface and pairing process may have changed since 2019, so those old menu descriptions are not guaranteed current instructions. The review does not specify Wi-Fi band requirements, reset timing, pairing timeout, account-region restrictions, or recovery steps. If pairing fails, first confirm power and pairing mode, then consult the product’s current instructions and check whether the exact device is still supported by the app. A 2.4-GHz network may be worth checking for an older Wi-Fi light, but that requirement is not confirmed for this model.

Placement, power, and comfort
A backlight works best as indirect light: the LEDs should wash the wall rather than shine directly into the viewer’s eyes. Leave space for the light to diffuse; a strip too close to the wall can create visible bright spots. A highly saturated color can tint the wall unevenly, and an overly bright strip can add glare instead of comfort.

- USB behavior: A monitor or TV USB port may shut off in standby. If it does, the light will lose power too, which can defeat schedules or remote-on expectations. A separate suitable USB power adapter or powered hub is an option where the display has no convenient port; the model’s exact electrical requirements are not established in the review.
- Mounting: Curved or textured rear panels can make adhesive contact uneven. Leave cable slack around VESA mounts, keep the controller clear of pinch points, and do not cover vents or place the strip against hot components.
- Corners and coverage: Avoid sharp folds unless the strip’s bend limits permit them. One strip may not illuminate a multi-monitor arrangement evenly.
- Comfort: The reviewer presented reduced eye strain as a practical benefit, but this was an editorial assessment, not a clinical study. Indirect light may make viewing more comfortable for some people by easing the contrast between screen and room; it is not proven to prevent eye strain or eye damage. Brightness, wall color, viewing distance, glare, room lighting, and individual vision all affect the result. Rapid flashing may be distracting.
Ownership questions the review leaves open
The 2019 review found Smart Life setup easier than before and reported voice-assistant support, but that does not guarantee compatibility with today’s app, Alexa, or Google Home versions. The review did not investigate whether the exact strip remains supported, requires an account, works locally without internet, or depends on cloud services. Those are reasonable questions for any app-connected light, not established defects of this model.
It also provides no long-term reliability test, adhesive-durability assessment, USB standby test, brightness or power measurements, or current listing for the exact product. The historical review is useful for understanding the product’s feature set, but not enough to establish current buyability or support confidence.

Govee’s official collection promotes TV backlights and color-mapping features, but features vary by product; check the exact model’s setup and compatibility before buying. Camera- or screen-analysis features may be a poor fit if you want a plain static glow or do not want to calibrate or maintain another app ecosystem. Hue’s listed strips are a different price and system-complexity tier, particularly if you do not already own Hue hardware.
When comparing any current strip, check whether it uses USB or mains power, whether it has physical controls, whether it is RGB, RGBW, or RGBIC, whether effects are static or reactive, and whether synchronization requires a camera, HDMI box, hub, or bridge. Also verify the supported display size, mounting method, brightness and diffusion, voice-assistant support, offline behavior, and the maker’s current support information. Generic Tuya- or Smart Life-compatible strips may look similar on paper but vary in controller quality, documentation, adhesive, and app support; they are not automatically equivalent to the reviewed NiteBird.

Who should consider it
- Consider a NiteBird-style strip if you mainly want a low-cost decorative glow, simple color and scene controls, scheduling, or voice commands—and can verify that the exact model is available and supported.
- Choose a screen-sync product instead if matching colors to games or films is the point; verify whether the particular product uses a camera or HDMI hardware and what calibration it needs.
- Look elsewhere if you need measured brightness or color accuracy, dependable local control without an account or cloud service, durable mounting on a difficult surface, or a product with confirmed current support.
