Verdict: The Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone Air Fryer AF400UK is still one of the most capable conventional two-drawer air fryers for family meals. Its independent zones, genuinely useful Sync function and strong crisping make it particularly good at cooking two foods with different settings so they finish together. The trade-off is a large, heavy countertop appliance with opaque drawers, no automatic shake reminder and a price that only makes sense when you need its capacity.
This review covers the UK AF400UK. The US equivalent is generally the 10-quart DZ401; despite similar capacity, it has different electrical specifications and control labels.
What exactly is the Ninja Foodi MAX XXXL?
“XXXL” is a marketing description rather than one globally identical model. In the UK, the appliance reviewed here is the Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone Air Fryer AF400UK: 9.5 litres split between two approximately 4.75-litre drawers. In the US, the comparable product is commonly sold as the Ninja Foodi 6-in-1 10-quart Air Fryer with DualZone Technology DZ401. Australia and New Zealand have their own AF400-family variants.
Check the label at the rear, beside the power cord, before buying accessories or replacement parts. The UK model is rated at 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz and 2,470 W; Ninja identifies the US version as 1,690 W. A plug adapter does not make the UK appliance suitable for a US electrical supply. What dual-zone cooking actually changes
Sync: different food, one finish time
Set each drawer independently, then press SYNC. The shorter programme waits while the longer one starts, allowing, for example, chicken in one zone and vegetables in the other to finish together. Sync saves coordination and oven space; it does not remove the need to check, shake or turn food.
- Enter the longer programme in its drawer.
- Enter the other drawer’s function, temperature and time.
- Select SYNC, then press start.
US models use the broadly equivalent name Smart Finish.
Match: the same food in both drawers
MATCH copies one drawer’s settings to the other for a larger quantity of the same food. It remains two separate cooking spaces, not one continuous basket.

Capacity: large, but not two oven trays
Ninja markets the AF400UK as suitable for eight or more people and states that each drawer can hold up to a 2 kg chicken or 1.4 kg of fries. Those are maximum manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of evenly browned food. Fries, wings and vegetables generally crisp better in a loose layer, with shaking or redistribution during cooking.
- Excellent: a main and side, two different portions, or foods requiring different temperatures.
- Less suitable: one large casserole, full-size pizza, sheet-pan meal or anything needing one uninterrupted surface.
- Reality: a heavily loaded drawer may need a second batch even when the food technically fits.
Functions and temperature range
The UK model provides six functions:
- Air Fry
- Max Crisp
- Roast
- Bake
- Reheat
- Dehydrate
Max Crisp is a high-heat programme intended especially for frozen foods; it is not a separate heating technology. The listed range is approximately 40°C to 240°C, with lower-temperature programmes allowing extended durations, including up to 12 hours for dehydration. Maximum-temperature programmes have shorter time limits.
Cooking performance
Independent testing by TechRadar found homemade and frozen fries crisp outside with soft interiors, although browning was not perfectly uniform. Chicken wings developed crisp, golden skin while remaining moist. Homemade fries benefited from oil; the manual guidance cited by TechRadar suggests about one tablespoon for 500 g, while wings may also need light oiling.

The AF400 has no automatic shake reminder. That matters for fries, nuggets and small vegetables: redistribute food yourself rather than assuming the timer guarantees even colour. Opening a drawer to do so also means a brief heat loss.

The manufacturer’s “up to 75% faster than a fan oven” claim was based on fish fingers and sausages, including preheating; it should not be applied to every recipe. Likewise, “up to 75% less fat” is a comparison with deep-frying, not a blanket health claim.
Controls and daily usability
Physical dials and buttons make the AF400 straightforward to programme. Each zone has separate function, temperature and time controls, with audible alerts and dedicated Sync and Match controls. The opaque drawers have no viewing windows, so checking colour requires pulling them out. Ideal Home’s long-term review praised the simple interface and found Sync and Match useful in normal meal preparation.

Remember which side is Zone 1 and which is Zone 2 when programming. A short pause in the shorter programme after Sync is selected is expected behaviour, not a fault.

The current UK product page lists a footprint of 51.79 cm long × 42.19 cm wide × 41.91 cm high, a weight of 11.5 kg and an 81.28 cm cord. TechRadar and Ideal Home list smaller body measurements and an 8.8 kg weight, likely reflecting a different measurement convention or appliance-only dimensions. Measure the actual retail unit and its clearance rather than combining these figures.
Ninja specifies at least 12 cm clearance around the rear exhaust. Hot air and steam leave from the back, so do not push the appliance against a wall or cabinet, and protect an unsealed worktop from hot drawers. In practice this is a semi-permanent countertop appliance, not something most owners will want to lift in and out daily.

Cleaning and materials
The removable drawers and crisper plates are identified by Ninja as dishwasher-safe. The FAQ describes PTFE-coated drawers and nano-ceramic-coated aluminium crisper plates. Let parts cool before washing, remove grease and crumbs around the plate, and clean the interior and exhaust area with non-abrasive tools. Metal utensils and scouring pads can damage the non-stick surfaces.
Does it replace an oven?
Sometimes. It is particularly effective for frozen snacks, chips, wedges, wings, smaller meat cuts, reheating pizza or fried food, and two small meal components. It is not a replacement for a full-size oven when you need a large casserole, a complete pizza, a sheet-pan meal or one broad cooking surface.

Who should buy the AF400UK?
- You regularly cook two different foods at once.
- You serve four or more people and have permanent counter space.
- You prefer physical controls and want reliable synchronized finishing.
- You value capacity and crisping performance more than the smallest footprint or newest design.
Who should skip it?
- You mainly cook for one or two people.
- You must store the appliance after every use or lack the required rear clearance.
- You want viewing windows or an automatic shake alert.
- You need one large continuous cavity.
- A newer stacked or flexible-basket model costs about the same in your market.
Price, warranty and buying check
The official UK page showed £229.99 on 18 August 2026; treat that as a dated snapshot and recheck the live listing. An earlier £179.99 figure was a historical sale signal, not today’s guaranteed price. Ninja lists a two-year UK/ROI guarantee when the appliance is registered. Buy the exact local-voltage model and confirm the model number before ordering.

The Bottom Line
The AF400UK remains a strong buy for families that genuinely use two zones: it crisps well, Sync works as intended and 9.5 litres handles substantial two-part meals. Its size, opaque drawers and lack of a shake reminder are meaningful compromises. Buy it when that flexibility justifies the counter space and price; choose a flexible-basket, stacked or smaller model when it does not.
