Google Home can now handle most everyday management of the Nest x Yale Lock, but the lock has not moved entirely out of the Nest app. Google’s expanded support includes status, battery information, history, notifications, passcodes, guest schedules and more settings. Initial setup still goes through the Nest app, and remote app control still depends on Nest Connect.
What changed in Google Home
Google expanded the Nest x Yale Lock’s controls in Google Home, building on earlier lock-and-unlock support. The app can now provide access to lock status, battery status, history and notifications, as well as passcode management, scheduled guest access and advanced settings. Google described the rollout as gradual, so some controls may not appear for every account or phone at the same time. The announced experience covers Android and iOS, but that does not guarantee identical availability on both platforms.
For existing owners, this makes Google Home a practical main app for routine use. It does not amount to a complete transfer of the lock’s setup and support path. Google’s release notes describe the expanded controls, while its lock-control instructions continue to describe use of both Google Home and Nest.
What moved—and what did not

Google’s installation guide directs owners to install and calibrate the lock, set up Nest Connect, then add the lock in the Nest app. Google also lists the Nest x Yale Lock among devices that must first be set up in Nest before they can appear in Google Home. You may no longer need to open Nest often after setup, but Google has not documented the Nest app as obsolete for this lock. Keep it available until setup and any management or troubleshooting you need are working.

Use the lock in Google Home
Lock or unlock
- Open Google Home and tap Home.
- Tap All devices.
- Tap the Nest x Yale Lock tile.
Open lock settings
- In Google Home, tap Home, then All devices.
- Touch and hold the lock tile.
- Tap Settings.
Depending on the controls available to your account, settings can include the lock name, room assignment, tone volume, auto-lock and One Touch locking. Menu labels or feature availability may vary as Google rolls out the update.
Create a passcode
- In Google Home, tap Home, then All devices.
- Touch and hold the lock tile, then tap Access and select the lock.
- Set a 4- to 8-digit code and tap Save.
- Share or copy the guest code if needed.
Google distinguishes personal codes from guest codes. Guest access can be indefinite or scheduled, and a guest code can be shared by text or email. A personal passcode can be changed but not deleted, according to Google’s instructions. After creating or changing a code, verify it at the physical keypad before relying on it. Don’t include actual household codes in messages or other places where they could be exposed.

Nest Connect still matters
The Nest x Yale Lock does not connect directly to Wi-Fi. Nest Connect links the lock to the internet and Nest ecosystem, enabling remote app control. Google’s buyer and product information says Nest Connect is required. Nest Guard is no longer a substitute: Google ended Nest Secure support on April 8, 2024, and owners who used Guard as the bridge need Nest Connect instead. The keypad and interior thumb turn still provide local operation. That distinction matters during an internet, account or app problem: app access is not the same thing as operating the lock at the door.

Check codes and access when someone leaves
Removing a person from a Google Home household should not be assumed to remove a physical keypad code they already know. Review and change or remove any codes that person could use, and verify the new access arrangement at the lock. Google also notes that when a family member leaves a home, activity history may remain visible to other members for up to 60 days. Google’s control guide explains the history note and passcode management.
If the lock or its controls are missing
- The lock is missing from Google Home: Confirm you are signed in to the Google Account associated with the right home. Check that the lock still appears in the Nest app; Google’s documented initial setup is Nest-based.
- The tile appears but shows offline: Check that Nest Connect is powered and online, and that it is close enough to communicate with the lock. Remote controls require the bridge and connectivity.
- Advanced settings or passcodes are absent: Update Google Home, check the selected home, close and reopen the app, and allow for staged rollout differences. Try the other supported app or platform if available; Google has not established that every feature appears simultaneously for every user.
- You are changing accounts or household membership: Use the Nest app for setup or account-management steps Google Home does not expose. Confirm codes and access before removing people or changing the lock’s setup.
- You are locked out of app control: Use the keypad or interior thumb turn while restoring connectivity. Do not factory-reset solely because a control is missing from Google Home; a reset can require repeating setup.

Does the update make the Nest x Yale a good new purchase?
For someone who already owns the lock, the expanded Google Home controls are a useful improvement; there is no reason to replace working hardware simply because its app experience is changing. Keep Nest Connect and the Nest app available for setup and recovery.
