Neato’s cloud servers have shut down. D-series and Connected robot vacuums are not necessarily physically dead: owners can generally still press the robot’s button to start a manual full-house cleaning run. However, the MyNeato app, remote commands, cloud scheduling, room and zone controls, maps, notifications and dependent integrations are no longer dependable or available.
The most accurate description is de-featured rather than hard-bricked. The cleaning hardware may continue working, but the connected service that supplied much of the robot’s intelligence is gone.
What happened to Neato?
Neato Robotics ceased operations in May 2023. Its parent company, Vorwerk, initially continued the cloud platform to honor what it described as an original five-year service commitment.
On October 6, 2025, Vorwerk announced that it was phasing out Neato cloud services. The company cited changing cybersecurity standards, compliance obligations and regulatory requirements, saying the legacy infrastructure could no longer be maintained safely, reliably and sustainably. The official support information now states that the servers have been shut down.

This means the shutdown arrived roughly three years earlier than the approximately 2028 end date owners might have inferred from a five-year continuation after Neato’s closure. That describes the gap between the expectation and the service end date; it does not, by itself, establish a legal breach. Warranty and contractual consequences depend on the purchase terms and the customer’s jurisdiction.

Which Neato models are affected?
The affected product families include the D8, D9 and D10, along with earlier Connected D-series models such as the D3, D4, D5, D6 and D7. These generations did not all use identical software or expose identical features, so owners should check the exact model and firmware before assuming that a particular schedule, map or workaround will behave in the same way.

What still works, and what is gone?

The exact result can vary by model, firmware and previous configuration. An existing schedule stored on a robot may not behave like an app-managed schedule, and owners should not assume that previously configured no-go zones, room routines or maps remain usable.
Neato’s official fallback is straightforward: charge the robot, place it normally, then press the start or clean button once to begin a manual full-house run. Consult the relevant manual for pausing, docking, resets and error recovery. The company does not promise that app-defined schedules, maps, room cleaning or automations will remain available.
Is a Neato “bricked”?
In the strict technical sense, no. A hard-bricked product cannot perform its core function. A Neato that still vacuums after the cloud shutdown has not suffered a battery, motor, laser-navigation or firmware failure merely because its app stopped working.

It is better described as de-featured: the physical cleaning function remains, while the connected functions that made the product programmable and remotely controllable have disappeared. Calling it “bricked” may be understandable shorthand, but it overstates the hardware failure and understates the loss of the smart layer.
What should Neato owners do now?
- Test manual cleaning. Confirm that the robot charges, starts, navigates, cleans and returns to its dock.
- Record the model and firmware. This information matters if you investigate an unofficial local-control project.
- Check warranty and purchase records. Vorwerk says manufacturer warranty commitments remain valid, but a warranty claim generally covers a defect or covered failure—not restoration of discontinued cloud features. Use the support channel and warranty terms for your country.
- Check European exchange eligibility. If you bought the Neato in Europe since May 2023, you may qualify for Vorwerk’s voluntary exchange program.
- Choose between manual use, experimentation and replacement. Keep the robot if full-house cleaning is enough; investigate local control only if you accept technical risk; replace it if schedules, room cleaning and dependable automation are essential.
Europe-only Kobold VR7 exchange program
On April 24, 2026, Vorwerk announced a voluntary exchange program for eligible customers in Europe. The published criteria include buying the Neato since May 2023, purchasing it after the closure announcement, actively using cloud features and meeting the program’s other eligibility requirements.
Eligible customers may exchange the Neato for a current Kobold VR7. Vorwerk describes the offer as voluntary and without recognition of a legal obligation. Owners should contact Neato customer service through the support widget and confirm the live terms.
The verified announcement is limited to Europe. It does not establish an equivalent program for U.S. customers or other regions.

Can Home Assistant rescue a Neato?
The official integration
Home Assistant’s historical Neato integration provided vacuum control, battery information, maps, schedule controls, alerts and custom cleaning actions. However, Home Assistant now warns that new installations cannot be configured because the Neato Developer Network is unavailable. An existing installation may have continued temporarily, but it should not be treated as a reliable post-shutdown solution.

Unofficial local-control projects
The open-source neato-connected project aims to control supported Neato robots locally through Home Assistant. It is not an official Neato or Vorwerk product and is not a plug-and-play consumer repair.

Potential obstacles include model and firmware compatibility, complex configuration, physical disassembly or wiring, and possible use of an ESP-based interface. A workaround may restore some commands without restoring the original app, map database, room semantics, schedules or notifications. It may also damage the robot, remove safety assurances or leave the owner without manufacturer support.
Community discussions about replacement servers and other projects should be treated as unverified until their documentation and compatibility are established. Local control is most sensible for a technically experienced owner with a spare or otherwise low-risk robot—not for someone who needs dependable cleaning immediately.

How to avoid another cloud-dependent purchase
“Works with Alexa,” “has an app” and “supports Home Assistant” do not prove that a robot will remain useful after its vendor’s servers disappear. Before buying a replacement, ask these specific questions:
- Can it start, navigate, dock and complete a basic cleaning run without internet access?
- Is there a documented local API or genuinely local Home Assistant integration?
- What does Matter expose: only start and stop, or also maps, rooms, schedules and sensors?
- Can the robot be commissioned without a mandatory vendor account?
- Are firmware updates dependent on the vendor server?
- Are batteries, brushes and other replacement parts available?
- Where are maps, room names, images and usage data stored?
- Does it retain usable physical controls if the app fails?
- Does the manufacturer publish a service-life or shutdown policy?
Home Assistant documents Roborock as a hybrid example: many commands may use local communication, but setup, fallback control, maps and routines can still involve the cloud. Matter may improve offline operation on some models, but it does not expose every feature on every device. See the Roborock integration documentation.
iRobot provides a different example. Home Assistant documents local-push support for selected older Wi-Fi Roomba and Braava models, while noting that newer x05 models, including the Roomba 105, 405 and 505, are not supported by that integration. The wider smart-home lesson
The Neato shutdown illustrates the difference between owning hardware and owning the service that makes hardware intelligent. A robot can remain mechanically sound while becoming substantially less useful when its account system, command servers and cloud databases disappear.
For consumers, the best protection is not a particular brand or protocol. It is a documented offline fallback, local control where practical, available replacement parts, clear integration documentation and a realistic understanding of which features depend on a vendor’s servers.
