Bring most outdoor houseplants inside before overnight temperatures settle into the low 50s°F—well before frost. The safest transition is to inspect and rinse every plant, isolate returning plants for three to four weeks, reduce outdoor light over one to two weeks when possible, and then adjust watering and fertilizer for slower indoor growth.

1. Waiting for the first frost

Frost is a late warning for many tropical and tender houseplants. Watch overnight forecasts instead of waiting for a visible freeze. Extension recommendations differ because species, exposure and climate differ:

Guidance Practical meaning
Penn State Extension Prepare before temperatures reach roughly 40–50°F; many houseplants can be damaged in that range.
Iowa State University Extension Move plants inside when nighttime temperatures dip consistently into the 50s°F.
University of Minnesota Extension Most houseplants should come inside below 50°F, with species exceptions.
Illinois Extension Horticulture educator Ken Johnson advises, “When temperatures drop below 55°F, it’s time to bring plants indoors,” as guidance for many houseplants.

These figures are practical safeguards, not a universal biological cutoff. Check the needs of each species and move cold-sensitive plants earlier. Plants that tolerate cool conditions may have a different window, but delaying until a cold snap risks damage that cannot be reversed.

2. Bringing in pests with the plant

Outdoor plants can carry insects, mites, eggs or soil-dwelling pests that multiply quickly in a warm room. Inspect before a pot crosses the doorway.

Inspect the entire plant

  • Examine both sides of every leaf, along stems and in leaf joints.
  • Look across the soil surface and around the pot rim and drainage holes.
  • Check the container exterior, saucer and any attached support.
  • Remove badly damaged or diseased foliage before moving the plant.

Do not rely on a quick glance at the top of the canopy. Small pests and eggs are often hidden underneath leaves or near stems.

Rinse before treatment

A thorough water rinse can remove some pests. Penn State Extension also describes soaking a pot to its rim in lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes to flush certain soil-dwelling insects. Let the plant drain and the foliage dry before placing it indoors; do not leave a saturated pot standing in water.

Use chemicals only for an identified need

Do not spray every plant automatically. If inspection and rinsing do not solve the problem, choose a treatment labeled for that plant and the target pest, and follow the label exactly. Insecticidal soap is one possible option described by extension guidance, not a blanket treatment for all plants. A severe infestation may make discarding the plant the safest way to protect established houseplants.

3. Skipping quarantine

A clean-looking plant can still harbor eggs or hidden insects. Keep returning plants separate from established indoor plants for three to four weeks where possible. Use a separate room or a practical physical gap, and avoid sharing watering cans, pruners or saucers during this period.

Inspect the isolated plants repeatedly, not just on arrival. Continue checking after they join the indoor collection and through winter, because low light and warm indoor temperatures can allow a small surviving population to expand.

4. Moving straight from full sun to a dim room

Outdoor light is usually much stronger than light through a window. An abrupt change can trigger yellowing, leaf drop or stalled growth even when no pest or disease is present.

Acclimate when the schedule allows

Over about one to two weeks before the move, reduce exposure gradually: shift sun-loving plants to a less intense location, add shade, or bring them into brighter shade for longer periods. This is a way to reduce shock, not a requirement that overrides a sudden freeze forecast.

Choose the indoor location by plant needs

Once inside, match placement to the plant’s light requirement. Bright indirect light suits many common houseplants, while high-light plants may need a brighter window. Keep foliage away from cold drafts, exterior doors and heating vents or radiators, which can create rapid temperature and moisture swings.

If available daylight is inadequate, there are two legitimate choices: relocate the plant to a brighter suitable spot or add supplemental lighting. A grow light is optional and should supplement a location that otherwise meets the plant’s temperature and space requirements; it is not a universal requirement.

5. Keeping the summer watering schedule

Indoor light and air movement are usually lower than outdoors, so growth and water use often slow. A calendar copied from summer can leave roots continually wet.

  • Check the soil moisture for the individual plant before watering.
  • Water when the soil begins to dry, as Nebraska Extension advises, rather than on a fixed weekly schedule.
  • Account for the pot’s size, drainage, plant species and the humidity of the room.
  • Empty saucers and outer containers so roots are not left in standing water.

Do not force the same interval on every plant. A plant still growing vigorously under bright or supplemental light may use water differently from one resting in a dim room.

6. Continuing summer fertilizer through dormancy

Fertilizer supports active growth; it does not compensate for inadequate light. Dormant or non-growing plants generally need little or no fertilizer. Pause routine feeding when growth has slowed, and reassess only if the plant is actively producing new growth under suitable light. Follow the fertilizer label for any product you use.

7. Assuming every leaf change means failure

Some yellowing or leaf drop can follow the move as a plant adjusts to different light, temperature, humidity and airflow. First rule out correctable causes—cold drafts, a heat source, persistently wet soil, severe dryness or pests—then give the plant stable conditions. Avoid repeatedly moving it from window to window, which adds another environmental change.

8. Ignoring humidity and air movement

Grouping plants can modestly improve their local humidity, provided leaves are not crowded so tightly that air remains stagnant. A humidifier may help when a plant’s humidity needs are consistently higher than the room provides. Misting is temporary and should not be treated as a lasting humidity solution. Keep plants away from direct heat and drafts, and leave enough space for inspection and airflow.

A practical before-and-after checklist

Before the move

  1. Check the forecast and plan to move tender plants before nights reach the low 50s°F.
  2. Identify each plant’s light and temperature needs.
  3. Inspect leaves, stems, soil, pot, saucer and supports.
  4. Remove diseased or badly damaged foliage.
  5. Rinse foliage; for suspected soil pests, consider the lukewarm-water soak described by Penn State Extension.
  6. Let containers drain and foliage dry.
  7. Begin reducing outdoor light over one to two weeks when weather permits.

After the move

  1. Place plants in a suitable indoor light location away from drafts and heat sources.
  2. Keep them separate from established houseplants for three to four weeks.
  3. Continue pest inspections throughout quarantine and winter.
  4. Check soil moisture rather than repeating the outdoor watering calendar.
  5. Stop or reduce fertilizer if growth has slowed; reassess when active growth resumes.
  6. Use supplemental light or a brighter location only when the available daylight does not meet the plant’s needs.

When a plant should stay outside—or be discarded

Temperature guidance is species-dependent. A plant known to tolerate cool nights may remain outside longer than a tropical plant, but forecast uncertainty and wind exposure still matter. Conversely, do not bring a severely infested or diseased plant directly into a collection simply because temperatures are falling. Isolate it for treatment, or discard it when the infestation threatens the rest of the plants.
