Alpha 2 was a real, small humanoid robot from UBTECH, promoted in 2015 as a family companion that could talk, move, entertain, and control compatible smart-home devices. But “pretty much do everything around the house” was promotional shorthand: the available evidence does not show that it could independently clean, cook, wash dishes, or handle ordinary household objects reliably. In 2026, UBTECH’s current product pages list newer Alpha models, not Alpha 2.
What was Alpha 2?
Alpha 2 was a compact, bipedal consumer robot developed by Chinese robotics company UBTECH. Unlike an industrial machine or a human-sized humanoid, it was designed as a mobile family companion combining voice interaction, entertainment, information services, smart-home control, and tools for developers.
The November 2015 GeekWire headline that made Alpha 2 famous captured the ambition of the pitch, not a demonstrated ability to perform general housework. UBTECH’s later campaign and developer material describe a connected robot with software skills and expressive movement, rather than a mechanical domestic worker.

The campaign advertised a robot about 17 inches tall, 9 inches wide, and 5 pounds, with more than one hour of typical operating time. Those are historical campaign specifications, not verified current production specifications. UBTECH’s Indiegogo campaign

What could Alpha 2 actually do?
Movement and entertainment
Contemporary coverage and UBTECH materials describe Alpha 2 walking upright, moving its head and arms, standing after a fall, speaking, telling stories, singing, dancing, taking photos, and offering exercise or yoga-style guidance. It could also provide weather information and act as a conversational companion. These functions made it an interactive robot, but not an autonomous worker.
Voice, apps, and connected services
The robot was presented as able to respond to voice commands, use speech recognition and text-to-speech, and connect with smartphones and developer applications. UBTECH’s developer portal and developer center retain material about software tools and app functions. The campaign also promoted downloadable VAPPs through an Alpha Store and an Android SDK and open API for developers.
Claims that remained campaign promises
The campaign additionally described planned or advertised functions such as reading and sending messages, making calls, checking voicemail, interpreting, posting to social media, recognizing faces and voices, and communicating with other Alpha 2 robots. It also suggested that web search and general knowledge could help with cooking or repairs. These are campaign claims; the available evidence does not establish how consistently they worked in consumer use or whether every promised feature was delivered.

What “around the house” meant—and what it did not
Alpha 2’s most plausible household role was as a mobile voice interface and companion. The campaign said it could control compatible Wi-Fi-connected equipment such as lights, locks, alarms, and other appliances; developer material describes connecting devices and applications through a unified interface. In practice, that depended on a suitable network, compatible equipment, integrations, and account permissions. Telling a connected light to switch on is not the same as physically operating an ordinary appliance.
The sources do not establish that Alpha 2 could autonomously vacuum, wash dishes, prepare meals, carry laundry, clean rooms, or manipulate everyday objects with human-like dexterity. Nor do they show reliable performance on stairs or in cluttered homes. A robot’s ability to perform a staged action is not evidence that it can repeat the task unsupervised in varied household conditions.
- Supported by the descriptions: voice interaction, movement, entertainment, information services, photography, and control of compatible connected devices.
- Not established: broad physical housework, caregiving, medical care, or unrestricted conversation and task execution at the level of a modern generative-AI assistant.
Hardware, connectivity, and practical limits
The campaign described Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, 16GB of local storage, a camera, smartphone, tablet, or computer control, and a 100–240V AC charging cord. It said remote access required account authentication and authorization. Launch language was described as U.S. English and Mandarin, with other languages planned; a contemporary GeekWire article also mentioned Spanish, so the timing and availability of additional languages are not clear.

The campaign’s battery claim—more than one hour under typical use—would make charging and duty-cycle planning important for extended use. Its small size also constrained reach and physical usefulness around full-size furniture and appliances. The robot’s camera, voice features, remote monitoring, and connected services raise privacy questions, but the available material does not establish where audio and images were processed, how long data was retained, or whether its services and privacy practices remain active in 2026.
As with any networked legacy robot, functions could be affected by Wi-Fi or pairing problems, unavailable cloud services, aging batteries, worn servos, unsupported apps, or incompatible smart-home integrations. What did Alpha 2 cost, and when was it supposed to arrive?
Alpha 2 was promoted through a 2015 crowdfunding campaign. GeekWire reported an early-bird offer of about $500, while the campaign proposed a market price around $1,499. The campaign gave a planned retail availability of Q2 2016 and a shipping target beginning in February 2016. These are historical offer and schedule figures, not a confirmed current price or proof of fulfillment on those dates.

The campaign also described a 90-day warranty against manufacturing defects, with servos, batteries, and cables excluded. That was a historical campaign policy, not a current support commitment. The available information does not establish total units shipped, campaign fulfillment rates, retail sales, or the long-term health of the Alpha Store and VAPP ecosystem.

Alpha 2 appears to be a legacy product, not a current mainstream retail offering. UBTECH’s current English website and product brochure list Alpha Mini and Alpha 1E in the Alpha line rather than Alpha 2. The company’s broader current materials emphasize commercial and industrial robotics alongside education, healthcare, and consumer products.

UBTECH still has legacy Alpha 2 developer pages, and an Alpha2 app remains listed in Apple’s App Store. Those pages do not prove that new hardware is for sale, that cloud services still work, or that repairs and official support are available. The evidence supports saying Alpha 2 is no longer listed among current products; it does not establish an explicit official discontinuation announcement.

UBTECH’s later public-facing direction is more focused on commercial and industrial humanoids, including its Walker series. Its company profile provides current corporate context. Alpha Mini and Alpha 1E are the current Alpha products shown, but the available material does not establish that either is a direct feature-for-feature replacement for Alpha 2.
How Alpha 2 fits into the history of household robots
Alpha 2 brought together a walking form, voice commands, expressive movement, entertainment, and connected-home controls at a time when consumer humanoid robots were an emerging idea. Its campaign blended real software and movement functions with planned services and an expansive vision of household assistance. That mix is why the headline can sound more capable than the demonstrated physical skill set.
Compared with common household technology today, voice interaction and smart-home control are now familiar through speakers, phones, and home platforms. Autonomous floor cleaning is handled by specialized robot vacuums and mops. General-purpose object manipulation and reliable physical household labor remain much harder problems; Alpha 2’s material does not demonstrate them.

In 2026, an Alpha 2 listing should be treated as a legacy-hardware purchase, not as a supported home robot. For a collector or robotics hobbyist, ask the seller to demonstrate the specific functions that matter and verify the robot before paying.
- Confirm that the robot powers on, walks, speaks, and pairs with the app.
- Check battery condition, servo movement, cables, and charging equipment.
- Verify app compatibility, Wi-Fi pairing, and any cloud-dependent functions on the network and devices you will use.
- Ask whether accounts can be transferred or reset, and whether remote access can be revoked.
- Establish return rights and whether replacement parts or local repair are realistically available.
For active UBTECH product information, use the company’s current catalog rather than treating an old campaign page or app listing as a live purchase offer.
