Smart lighting can lower your electricity bill, but connecting a bulb to Wi-Fi does not automatically make it more efficient. The biggest gains come from replacing incandescent or halogen bulbs with LEDs, reducing how long lights run, and using dimming, schedules, and occupancy sensors to prevent wasted light. If you already use efficient LEDs and switch them off reliably, smart controls may save only a few dollars a year.

Here’s how to estimate the opportunity, choose the right controls, and build automations that save energy without annoying the people who live in your home. This guide updates the title’s 2025 timeframe for 2026; example prices and product details are dated where noted.

Where smart-lighting savings actually come from

  • Bulb efficiency: An LED uses far fewer watts than an incandescent bulb for similar light output.
  • Control: A schedule, dimmer, or sensor can reduce the hours a light runs or keep it from running at full brightness unnecessarily.
  • Standby power: Connected bulbs and controls can draw a small amount of electricity even when the light is off.

A smart LED is not automatically cheaper to run than an ordinary LED. If both are used for the same number of hours at the same brightness, the smart bulb’s wireless electronics may make its total consumption slightly higher. The savings come when smart features change how the light is used. ENERGY STAR recommends features such as schedules, remote control, geofencing, and occupancy sensing, and advises looking for certified products designed to limit energy use in operation and standby. Lighting is only one part of a household electricity bill. Smart lights are a focused opportunity—not a substitute for attention to larger energy uses such as heating and cooling. ENERGY STAR smart-home tips

Calculate what your lights cost now

Use this formula for a single bulb or a group of identical bulbs:

Annual lighting cost = (number of bulbs × watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per day × 365 × electricity rate per kWh

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the bulb’s actual wattage, not its “equivalent” incandescent wattage, and use the electricity rate on your bill. If your rate changes by time of day, this simple estimate is an approximation.

Example: a home already using LEDs

Suppose 10 bulbs use 9 watts each, run four hours a day, and electricity costs $0.20 per kWh:

10 × 9 W ÷ 1,000 × 4 × 365 × $0.20 = $26.28 per year

Example: replacing an incandescent bulb

At the same four hours per day and $0.20 per kWh, a 60-watt incandescent costs about $17.52 a year to operate. A 9-watt LED costs about $2.63. The illustrative difference is $14.89 per bulb per year, before the cost of the new bulb. Your result will differ with wattage, hours, and utility rate.

Eight steps to reduce lighting waste

1. Replace inefficient bulbs before adding smart features

Start with incandescent and halogen lamps used regularly. Choose LEDs by lumens, which describe light output, rather than by the old bulb’s wattage. A “60-watt equivalent” LED does not consume 60 watts. Check the base, shape, color temperature, and whether the bulb is rated for an enclosed fixture, damp location, or outdoor use as needed. ENERGY STAR’s lighting upgrade guidance is a useful starting point for efficient product selection.

If your home already has efficient LEDs, skip a wholesale smart-bulb replacement. First find out whether controls can prevent meaningful wasted runtime.

2. Audit your lights for one week

Before buying equipment, note which lights are left on, run overnight, operate in daylight, or are awkward to reach. Pay particular attention to short-use spaces and fixtures people forget: bathrooms, closets, hallways, laundry rooms, garages, entryways, and outdoor lights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also ask whether a whole room needs to be lit. A task lamp or one fixture at a lower setting may replace several bulbs at full power. This quick audit helps distinguish a real control problem from a habit that needs no hardware.

(Note: Wi-Fi setup requires both 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and BLE for initial pairing. BLE-only setup requires just BLE.)
  • Always Connected: Still control your lights locally even if Wi-Fi goes down— with BLE backup when Wi-Fi is off.
  • Automated Lighting: Automate your smart bulb using a schedule, timer, plan, and biorhythm functions in the SmartLife app. Control these E26 bulbs separately or in a group for a customized experience that works for you and your family. Turn the lights on/off, change colors, or dim the lights using the SmartLife app anytime and anywhere.

3. Create an all-off routine—with sensible exceptions

Set up one easy command or scene for bedtime or leaving home. Depending on your system, it might run when you activate an “away” mode, lock the front door, or use a voice command. Exclude lights needed for security, caregiving, pets, or safe movement. A manual override matters: an automation people cannot easily bypass is likely to be disabled altogether.

4. Put occupancy sensors in short-use rooms

Motion-activated lighting is a strong candidate for closets, bathrooms, garages, mudrooms, hallways, and storage areas when lights are often left on. Configure two settings:

  • Timeout: How long the light stays on after movement stops. Use a shorter period in a pass-through space and a longer one where someone may sit still.
  • Darkness threshold: Whether the sensor should turn the light on only when the room needs it.

Test sensor placement and timing. Pets, curtains, or other movement can cause false triggers; a person sitting still may not trigger some sensors. Avoid settings that leave a stairway dark unexpectedly or switch off a light while someone is using the room. Bedrooms and occupied living rooms may be poor fits if automatic activation or shutoff is disruptive. ENERGY STAR identifies occupancy sensing as one way smart energy-management systems can reduce unnecessary use. ENERGY STAR SHEMS criteria

5. Set a comfortable lower default brightness

Use brighter light for tasks that need it and lower levels for general living, evening ambience, or overnight navigation. The right setting is the lowest comfortable brightness for the activity—not a fixed percentage that applies to every room.

Dimming can reduce power, but brightness and electricity use do not necessarily fall in lockstep for every bulb. Philips Hue, for example, says a Hue bulb dimmed to 70% brightness can use 51% less energy in its cited use case; that is a manufacturer claim, not a universal rule for other bulbs. Philips Hue energy-saving tips Check bulb and dimmer compatibility, and where practical use a plug-in power meter to measure a lamp’s consumption.

6. Schedule lights around real routines

Use schedules for predictable patterns, not arbitrary clock times. Examples include turning off common-area lights after the household’s usual bedtime, reducing brightness later in the evening, and setting separate weekday and weekend routines. For outdoor lighting, sunrise/sunset scheduling can follow seasonal daylight better than a fixed clock time.

7. Use geofencing and remote shutoff as backup

Geofencing can switch lights off when a phone leaves a defined area, but it can fail as a household-wide control. Another person may still be home, a guest may be present, location permissions may be disabled, or a phone’s battery-saving settings may delay updates. Include all relevant household members, check the geofence boundary, and keep a manual all-off control. Pair presence controls with schedules or sensors instead of relying on one location trigger.

8. Review the system monthly

Check whether lights are turning on needlessly, whether any routine is being bypassed, and whether sensors miss occupants or shut lights off too soon. Review energy reports if your products offer them, along with hub, subscription, and battery costs. Remove automations that create frustration. A simple system people keep using is more effective than a theoretically optimal one they switch off.

Choose the right control: bulb, switch, sensor, or timer?

Control Best fit Main trade-off
Smart bulb Renters, lamps, individual-bulb control, color or color-temperature scenes The wall switch must stay on; multiple bulbs can raise upfront cost.
Smart switch or dimmer Ceiling fixtures, multi-bulb zones, familiar wall-switch operation Wiring, neutral-wire, multi-way, load, and LED-dimmer compatibility need checking; renters may not be able to replace one.
Occupancy sensor Rooms used briefly or unpredictably where lights are often forgotten False triggers, missed motion, and unsuitable shutoff timing can make it annoying.
Timer or sunrise/sunset control Outdoor or other lights with a predictable operating pattern Less responsive to unexpected occupancy than a sensor or manual control.

Choose smart bulbs when you need individual control, color features, or a renter-friendly option that does not alter wiring—and can keep the fixture powered at the wall. Choose smart switches when you want an entire ceiling fixture or zone to behave like a normal switch for family and guests. Lutron describes Caséta as a system of switches, dimmers, sensors, schedules, and remotes that can be expanded by room. Lutron Caséta

For only a few lights, a simple Wi-Fi or Bluetooth product may be enough. Bluetooth range is limited, however, and may not support control while away from home; check the specific product’s capabilities. For a larger installation, a hub-based system can offer broader coordination, but adds equipment and potential ecosystem dependencies. Before buying, verify compatibility with your home platform and the exact features you want—basic “works with” support may not include every scene or automation.

Check compatibility and installation before you buy

  • Smart-bulb power: Smart bulbs generally need continuous power. If someone turns off the wall switch, app control and automations may stop until power returns. Consider a smart switch, wireless remote, or a lamp where the power switch will stay accessible and on.
  • Dimmer compatibility: A smart dimmer does not work properly with every LED. Flickering, buzzing, dropouts at low settings, or a narrow dimming range can result. Check the dimmer maker’s LED compatibility guidance and load requirements.
  • Wiring: Some smart switches need a neutral wire; others are designed for installations without one. Do not guess from the switch’s appearance. Turn off the correct breaker and verify power is off before electrical work. If you cannot confidently identify the wiring or meet local requirements, use a qualified electrician.
  • Multi-way circuits: Three-way and other multi-way setups require a compatible product and configuration. A standard single-pole switch may not be suitable.
  • Connectivity and outages: Check whether schedules run locally on the bulb or hub, or depend on internet access or a cloud account. Verify what continues working if Wi-Fi or a vendor service is unavailable.
  • Outdoor use: Use products rated for the location. Moisture, temperature, sunlight, and wireless range can affect reliability.

Remember standby power

“Off” can mean no visible light while a connected device remains in low-power standby. Philips Hue says standby use for its smart bulbs is typically below 1 watt per bulb, but that statement should not be applied as a specification for every brand or model. For scale, a device drawing a continuous 1 watt at $0.20/kWh would cost about $1.75 a year: 0.001 kW × 8,760 hours × $0.20. Ten devices at that assumed draw would cost about $17.52. These are illustrative calculations, not measured consumption for a particular product. ENERGY STAR’s connected-home criteria set standby-power limits for certain covered device categories—for example, 0.5 W for smart light switches—but those program criteria are not a measurement of every bulb or control. ENERGY STAR SHEMS criteria

Will the upgrade pay for itself?

Use a simple estimate:

Simple payback period = upfront cost ÷ annual electricity savings

Include bulbs, switches, dimmers, a hub or bridge, sensors, professional installation, optional subscriptions, and replacement batteries in the upfront or ongoing cost. A $100 setup that saves $20 a year has a five-year simple payback, before maintenance or replacement. This estimate does not assign a dollar value to convenience, remote control, safety, or ambiance.

The financial case is usually strongest when you are replacing incandescent or halogen bulbs, controlling many fixtures, or correcting substantial waste. If your lights are already efficient LEDs and you rarely leave them on, a premium smart-bulb system may not repay its cost through lighting savings alone. In that case, buy it for features you value—or keep the LEDs you have.

Best starting setup by household

  • Renter: Efficient LED smart bulbs in lamps, paired with a wireless remote if available. Avoid changing fixed switches without permission.
  • Family home: Consider smart switches for commonly used ceiling fixtures and occupancy sensors in short-use rooms. Keep physical controls intuitive for everyone.
  • Large or expanding system: A hub-based setup may make it easier to coordinate scenes and whole-home shutoff. Check local operation, platform compatibility, and total system cost first.
  • Outdoor lighting: Use appropriately rated fixtures with sunrise/sunset schedules; add motion control where it suits the security and access needs of the area.
  • Lowest-complexity approach: Use efficient LEDs, ordinary switches, or a basic timer where a smart system would solve no meaningful problem.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every smart bulb saves money compared with a standard LED.
  • Expecting a universal percentage reduction without accounting for wattage, runtime, electricity rate, and controls.
  • Installing smart bulbs where people routinely cut power at the wall.
  • Pairing an LED with an incompatible dimmer or using a single-pole switch on a multi-way circuit.
  • Setting motion sensors or schedules so aggressively that household members disable them.
  • Ignoring standby use across a large system, hub fees, or installation costs.
  • Assuming app or platform compatibility guarantees every advanced feature will work.

Daylight is another no-cost control: open blinds when practical, place work areas where useful natural light reaches them, and avoid switching on every fixture when one task light is enough. Replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs can also reduce heat released into a room, but any resulting cooling-bill benefit depends on climate, season, the home, and HVAC operation; treat it as a possible secondary effect, not a promised saving.
