Yes: Matter 1.5 added cameras and video doorbells to the smart-home standard. But that does not make every existing camera Matter-compatible, or guarantee that a new Matter camera will stream video in every smart-home app. A working setup depends on the camera, its firmware, the controller and the specific features each ecosystem supports.
What Matter 1.5 added
The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced Matter 1.5 on November 20, 2025. It introduced a standardized camera device model covering live video and audio, two-way communication, local and remote access, multiple streams, pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) controls, detection and privacy zones, and continuous or event-based recording to local or cloud storage. It also added support for video doorbells. The CSA’s announcement describes the camera capabilities.
Those are capabilities the specification can support—not a checklist every certified camera must offer. A particular model may expose only a subset, and a receiving smart-home platform may support a different subset. A camera that pairs successfully could still lack video, audio, PTZ or recording controls in that app.

Matter 1.5 is the release that introduced cameras. Matter 1.5.1, announced March 31, 2026, refined camera-related features such as multi-stream video and audio delivery, streaming efficiency, media capabilities, PTZ behavior and installation flexibility, including related device types such as chimes and intercoms. The CSA outlines the 1.5.1 changes.

In other words, Matter 1.5 established the camera foundation; 1.5.1 improved parts of it. Neither release means that updating a hub upgrades a camera or unlocks features its manufacturer and platform have not implemented. Matter 1.6 was announced on June 17, 2026, so 1.5 is not the newest overall version; it remains the key release for the introduction of camera support. What Matter does—and what still has to work
Matter is an application-layer interoperability standard, not a camera brand, video service or replacement for Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet. Those network technologies carry the device’s connection; Bluetooth Low Energy is commonly used during setup. For live camera media, Matter 1.5 uses WebRTC-related mechanisms, including STUN/TURN support for connectivity scenarios. The smart-home controller and app must then understand the camera device type and the features it exposes.
Think of a successful camera setup as a chain: camera implementation and certification → compatible network and firmware → controller support → app support for the feature you want. A break anywhere in that chain can leave you with a camera that pairs but does not do what you expected. Cameras are also more demanding than lights or plugs: streaming needs more bandwidth and processing, and remote viewing may require internet access even when local control works.

Matter’s purpose is to make compatible devices easier to use across ecosystems without requiring manufacturers to abandon their own apps or services. Google’s Matter overview describes the standard as a shared protocol for compatible ecosystems and notes that devices need suitable radios and hardware resources.
Does Matter 1.5 make existing cameras compatible?
Usually, no—not automatically. A manufacturer could add Matter camera support to an existing model with a firmware update, but only if the hardware can handle the implementation and media capabilities, the manufacturer builds and certifies it, and the update is released for that exact model and region. A camera’s Alexa skill, Google Assistant integration, HomeKit compatibility, ONVIF support or vendor bridge is not evidence that it supports the Matter 1.5 camera device type.
Before buying or expecting an upgrade, verify all of the following:

- The product listing or packaging explicitly identifies the exact camera model as a Matter camera—not merely “Matter-ready” or a Matter-compatible hub.
- The manufacturer provides a Matter setup code or QR code, or release notes naming Matter camera support for that model.
- The intended controller and smart-home app support that camera and the features you need.
- Recording, storage, subscriptions and advanced detection features are documented separately; the Matter logo does not promise any of them.
Google’s consumer guidance recommends looking for the Matter logo on packaging or a product website, but that general check does not prove camera streaming support in Google Home. Google’s Matter compatibility guidance is a useful starting point, not a camera-feature compatibility list.

Check the ecosystem, not just the Matter version
Support for Matter as a whole and support for Matter cameras are separate questions. The available platform documentation does not establish that every major ecosystem supports every camera feature. Check the exact camera, controller model, software release and feature combination before relying on a feed or automation.
- Alexa: Amazon documents Matter 1.5 SDK support on compatible Echo devices, but says its support covers a subset of Matter device types. Do not infer universal camera or feature support from the version number. Amazon’s compatibility documentation lists its Matter support.
- Apple Home: Apple documents Matter support and pairing in iOS 16.1 and later. That general documentation alone does not confirm that Apple Home supports Matter 1.5 camera streaming across products and releases. Apple’s Matter page describes its framework and pairing.
- Google Home: General Matter setup guidance does not establish full support for Matter camera feeds or controls. Confirm camera-specific support rather than relying on the Matter logo alone.
- SmartThings: Samsung discusses Matter commissioning and control, but that general background is not a consumer compatibility list for each camera model or feature. Samsung’s Matter 1.5 discussion provides context.
- Home Assistant: Do not assume complete camera support from general Matter integration or reports of implementation work. Check current documentation for the precise release and functions you need.
For any ecosystem, a controller that can commission Matter devices may still lack the camera-media support needed to show a feed. Look for explicit confirmation from both the camera maker and the platform provider.

Network and equipment basics
- Camera and controller: Both need the relevant Matter implementation and current firmware; the controller must support the camera device type. A phone or tablet is commonly used to commission the camera.
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Cameras are more likely to use these higher-bandwidth connections than Thread. Do not assume every Matter camera uses Thread. If a particular device does use Thread, a Thread Border Router is needed for Thread network operation.
- Local network: Follow the manufacturer’s Wi-Fi instructions. Guest networks or client isolation can prevent devices from communicating locally. Use the same local network for setup where the platform requires it.
- Remote viewing: Local pairing does not guarantee remote access. Remote viewing can depend on internet routing, firewall and NAT behavior, STUN/TURN connectivity, and sufficient upstream bandwidth.
- Power, storage and privacy: Check power or wiring requirements, local storage options, subscription terms, privacy controls and recording retention independently of Matter support.
Amazon’s documentation describes Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread and notes the Thread Border Router requirement for Thread devices; it does not mean every camera uses Thread. See Amazon’s Matter network guidance.

Exact menu labels differ by platform, so use the camera and controller makers’ instructions for the specific model. The general process is:
- Update the camera firmware, smart-home app and controller (such as a hub, speaker, display or home server). Restart the camera and controller after updates.
- Confirm the exact camera model supports Matter camera pairing. A hub or bridge in the product family may support Matter without exposing its own camera feed.
- Connect the camera to the recommended network. Avoid guest Wi-Fi or client isolation, and keep the phone and camera on the intended local network when required for setup.
- In the ecosystem’s add-device flow, scan the Matter QR code or enter its numeric setup code. Approve permissions and choose a home or room.
- Test the features you plan to use: live video, two-way audio, PTZ, events and recording. Repeat the checks in each ecosystem where you intend to use the camera.
- Keep the manufacturer’s app until you have confirmed firmware updates, storage, AI settings, privacy zones and recovery options. Matter may add interoperability without replacing the native app.
If setup fails: If the camera is not discovered, verify camera-type support, disable client isolation, check the local network and try the displayed Matter code again. If pairing completes but no feed appears, the platform may support commissioning but not camera media; check platform and firmware support before resetting the camera. If video works but audio or PTZ does not, the camera may not expose that feature through Matter, or the receiving app may not support it. If remote viewing fails while local video works, investigate internet routing, firewall, VPN, NAT, STUN/TURN and upload bandwidth. Factory-reset only after preserving account access and recording settings, since a reset can remove configuration.

What Matter does not standardize for you
Matter camera support does not make different products equivalent as security cameras. It does not guarantee a free subscription, cloud or local recording, a particular retention period, end-to-end encryption policy, AI recognition, reliable notifications, or the same controls in every app. Person, package, face, vehicle, sound and activity detection may remain exclusive to the manufacturer’s app. Sensor and night-vision quality, false detections, PTZ motor reliability, doorbell wiring and chime compatibility are product-level questions too.
Nor does adding a camera to Matter automatically replace a vendor account, native app, HomeKit Secure Video, Alexa or Google services, or a manufacturer’s own plan. A Matter stream can be the interoperability layer while richer search, alerts, AI and cloud recording stay proprietary. That division is useful if you want cross-platform basics, but it may mean the ecosystem app is not a full substitute for the camera maker’s software.
Should you buy a Matter camera now?
Buy now if cross-ecosystem use is a priority, the camera has a mature native app, and both the manufacturer and your chosen platform document support for the exact model and features you need. It should still be worthwhile if Matter exposes only basic streaming or events.
Wait or choose a proven alternative if you require guaranteed support in a particular ecosystem, advanced AI detection, professional-style continuous recording, or local-only storage that the vendor has not clearly documented. Be cautious when a product says only “Matter-ready,” when the Matter claim applies to a hub rather than the camera, or when camera streaming support is not tied to a specific model and release.
Compare candidates in this order: exact Matter certification and device type; supported controller and app combinations; local versus cloud video and any subscription; resolution and frame rate; audio and two-way talk; PTZ behavior; privacy controls; storage and retention; firmware support history; ability to use the native app; power and network needs; and the reset and return process. Because support is model- and platform-specific, a compatibility table is useful only when each camera/controller/feature combination has been verified—brand-level claims are not enough.
