Yes, a Lutron Pico can work with Home Assistant—but not as a standalone Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, or Wi-Fi button. The usual path is Pico remote → compatible Lutron bridge or processor → Home Assistant → lights, scenes, appliances, media, or other devices.
This makes Pico particularly useful in construction and renovation projects where a new control point is needed without opening walls or running additional switch wiring. Pico provides the tactile control, Lutron provides the wireless control network, and Home Assistant can connect that button to equipment from other manufacturers.
What is a Lutron Pico?
A Lutron Pico is a battery-powered wireless remote designed to control compatible Lutron lighting, shades, fans, and scenes. It can be handheld, mounted to a wall, installed on a tabletop or pedestal, or placed near a bed, sofa, garage entry, patio, or other location where adding a wired switch would be inconvenient.

Available layouts vary by model. Common configurations include two-button on/off controls, paddle-style two-button models, raise/lower controls, and four-button scene remotes. Some models are intended for particular Lutron product families or applications, so the model number matters when buying one.

Lutron lists Clear Connect Type A wireless communication and manufacturer-stated range figures of approximately 30 feet through walls and 60 feet line of sight. Actual performance depends on construction materials, metal boxes, concrete, foil-backed insulation, appliance placement, processor location, and the specific model. Lutron also states that modern Pico remotes use a replaceable CR2032 battery and typically provide about 10 years of battery life. Treat that as a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for every installation.

What Pico can do without Home Assistant
Home Assistant is not required for ordinary Pico-to-Lutron control. A Pico can be paired directly with compatible Lutron controls, making it useful for a simple second control location or a wireless wall control. For example, a Pico may control a Caséta dimmer without requiring a smart hub.
A compatible Lutron hub or processor becomes important when you want app-based programming, broader scene configuration, schedules, or Home Assistant integration. With hub-based programming, the Lutron system can determine which devices respond to a scene button. A four-button scene Pico can therefore behave differently depending on its model and whether it is used standalone or programmed through the Lutron app.
This distinction is important during construction: a Pico alone is a wireless control, not a complete smart-home system. It does not directly become a general-purpose Home Assistant controller.
What Home Assistant adds
Home Assistant lets a Pico press trigger actions outside the Lutron ecosystem. Depending on the devices installed in the home, one button could:

The Pico does not communicate directly with those third-party devices. Home Assistant receives the button event through the Lutron bridge or processor and then sends commands to the target devices.

Which Lutron systems work with Home Assistant?
Home Assistant’s current official Lutron Caséta integration documents support for:
- Lutron Caséta.
- RA2 Select.
- RadioRA 3.
- HomeWorks QSX.
- Caséta Smart Hub.
- Caséta Smart Bridge PRO.
- RA2 Select main repeaters.
- RadioRA 3 processors.
- HomeWorks QSX processors.
RadioRA 2 and HomeWorks QS use a different Home Assistant Lutron integration according to the Home Assistant documentation. Do not assume that a processor from one Lutron family can be substituted for another. Confirm compatibility by product family and exact model before purchasing hardware.
What hardware is required?

For a Home Assistant project, plan for four separate decisions:
- The Pico: choose the button layout and Lutron family.
- The Lutron bridge or processor: this receives Pico communication and exposes the system to Home Assistant.
- The Home Assistant host: this may be a dedicated appliance, server, NAS, virtual machine, or another supported installation.
- Optional remote-access services: these may simplify remote access or voice integration but are not required for the local Pico-to-Home Assistant path.
Adding Lutron to Home Assistant
The current Home Assistant setup path is:
- Open Home Assistant.
- Go to Settings → Devices & services.
- Select Add Integration.
- Search for Lutron Caséta.
- Follow the discovery or setup prompts.
- If discovery fails, use the manual hub configuration described in the official integration documentation.
Depending on the Lutron system and setup method, Home Assistant may require Lutron certificate files. The documentation describes files including caseta.key, caseta.crt, and caseta-bridge.crt. Because the certificate-generation procedure can change, follow the current instructions at the official Home Assistant Lutron integration page rather than relying on an old copied procedure.

Finding Pico buttons in Home Assistant
Recommended method: the automation editor
For most installations, create the automation from the graphical editor:
- Open Settings → Automations & scenes.
- Create a new automation.
- Choose a device trigger.
- Select the Pico device.
- Choose the button and available action, such as
pressorrelease. - Add the desired Home Assistant action.
- Save and test the automation.
Some hardware and processor combinations document additional actions such as multi_tap. Do not assume that every Pico exposes identical actions. Inspect the actual trigger list for the selected device. Long-press behavior has a particularly important limitation: the documented native LongHold event is currently associated primarily with HomeWorks QSX. Caséta and RadioRA 3 bridges do not provide that event in the documented integration behavior, so long press should not be promised for every Pico installation.
Advanced method: inspect the button event
For precise troubleshooting or more complex automations, listen for the Lutron event:
- Open Developer Tools → Events.
- Listen for
lutron_caseta_button_event. - Press the Pico button.
- Copy the event payload and use its actual values in the automation.
The payload can include fields such as serial, type, button_number, device_name, area_name, and action. The following is an illustration of the documented structure; replace the serial number and button number with values from your own event:

Useful Pico automation patterns
Two-button room control
Use the top button to turn on a room and the bottom button to turn it off. The target can be a Lutron light, a group containing lights from several manufacturers, or a Home Assistant scene.

Three-button room scenes
- On: activate the normal room scene.
- Favorite: set a preferred brightness or comfort level.
- Off: turn off the room.
The exact button names and layout depend on the Pico model, so confirm them in the device trigger list.

Four-button scene control
- Bright: activate a high-light scene for cleaning or working.
- Relax: set low-level ambient lighting.
- Movie: dim or turn off selected lights, lower shades, and start media.
- Off: shut down the room.
Whole-home routines
A bedside Pico can trigger a good-night routine that turns off lights, locks doors, adjusts the thermostat, and confirms the result with a notification. A hallway or entry Pico can activate a guest mode, arrival scene, or all-off routine without requiring a phone or voice assistant.
Construction and accessibility uses
Because a Pico can be mounted where a conventional switch would be difficult to install, it can provide a control point near a bed, beside a sofa, at an accessible height, or near a room entrance without extending electrical wiring. Test the intended location and mounting method before final installation, especially in homes with concrete, metal, or foil-backed construction.
Decide who owns each button
A Pico may be programmed natively in the Lutron app and also used as a Home Assistant trigger. That can produce duplicate actions. For example, the Lutron system may turn on a light while Home Assistant simultaneously activates a scene containing the same light and other devices.
Choose an ownership model for each button:
- Lutron-owned: best for fast, simple Lutron-only lighting control.
- Home Assistant-owned: best for mixed-brand scenes, scripts, media, security, and whole-home routines.
- Hybrid: useful when some buttons operate Lutron loads directly and another button starts a Home Assistant automation.
Write this ownership decision into the project documentation. It prevents later installers or occupants from reprogramming a button in one system without realizing that another system is also listening to it.

The Pico works in Lutron but not in Home Assistant
- Confirm the Pico operates its Lutron device natively.
- Confirm the correct Lutron bridge or processor appears under Settings → Devices & services.
- Verify that the correct Home Assistant Lutron integration is being used for the Lutron product family.
- Reload or reconfigure the integration.
- Open the Lutron device page and check whether button entities or triggers are disabled.
- Listen for
lutron_caseta_button_eventin Developer Tools. - Rebuild the automation using the event payload you actually receive.
The Pico is not discovered
Check power, network connectivity, processor compatibility, and whether the Pico has been included in the relevant Lutron system. Discovery problems can also result from an incomplete certificate setup or from using a processor family that the selected integration does not support.

The automation never fires
Do not look only for a normal light-state change. A Pico is primarily a button input, so inspect device triggers and listen for the documented button event. Confirm the exact serial, button_number, and action. Also check whether the automation is enabled and whether conditions are preventing its action.
One press produces two actions
Review both the Lutron app programming and Home Assistant automations. Remove one owner, change the native Lutron scene, or deliberately document the hybrid behavior.
Long press is unavailable
This may be expected rather than a fault. Long-press support depends on the processor and the events it emits. The documented integration does not support it uniformly across Caséta, RadioRA 3, and HomeWorks QSX.
The signal is unreliable
Use Lutron’s stated range only as a planning reference. Move the bridge or processor to a more central location, avoid enclosing it beside large metal objects, and test the Pico at its final mounting point. Concrete walls, metal electrical boxes, foil-backed insulation, and appliances can reduce effective range.

A Pico is strongest when the project already uses Lutron or specifically needs a movable, wireless wall control. A Home Assistant-native button may be more economical for a new installation that does not otherwise need Lutron hardware. A wired smart switch is usually the better permanent choice when the location already has suitable wiring and must control a load directly.
Is Pico worth using with Home Assistant?
Choose Pico plus Home Assistant when you want Lutron’s physical-control experience, a wireless control point without new wiring, dependable family- and guest-friendly buttons, or mixed-brand scenes triggered from a wall-mounted remote.
Reconsider Pico if you want a direct Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, or Bluetooth button, do not want to purchase Lutron hardware, need guaranteed long-press behavior on Caséta or RadioRA 3, or expect the Pico alone to function as a general Home Assistant controller.
The buying decision should distinguish the remote from the bridge or processor. A Pico can work without a hub for some direct Lutron control, but Home Assistant integration requires the compatible Lutron communication hardware and a functioning Home Assistant installation. Optional cloud services may add remote access or voice features, but they are not part of the core local control path.
