LG washers and dryers do not literally chat with technicians. On compatible models, they send diagnostic information as a sequence of tones that a phone relays to LG support. The representative uses that signal, together with your description of the problem, to suggest troubleshooting or decide whether service may be needed.
How SmartDiagnosis works
LG introduced SmartDiagnosis for laundry appliances in the United States on August 9, 2010. The original launch covered the WM3875 and WM3885 front-load washers, WT5101 and WT5001 top-load washers, and matching dryers—not every LG appliance made since then. LG’s launch announcement described a way for customer-service representatives to identify some problems without beginning with an in-home diagnostic visit.
The phone-based process is acoustic data transmission, not speech. Think of the tones as a machine-generated signal, more like an acoustic modem than a voice message:
- The appliance enters Smart Diagnosis mode.
- It emits an encoded sequence of tones.
- You hold a phone near the marked area so the phone carries the sound during a support call.
- The representative interprets the signal alongside your account of the symptoms.
- Support suggests a next step or recommends service if needed.
The basic tone method was designed to work over an ordinary phone call, without requiring home internet or special diagnostic equipment. LG’s description of the system likewise explains that the appliance sends tones for support staff to interpret.

- Smart ThinQ Technology – Wi-Fi enabled washer allows remote monitoring, cycle control, and notifications through the LG ThinQ app.
- Quiet & Durable Inverter Direct Drive Motor – Designed for reduced vibration, quieter operation, and long-term reliability.
How to start a phone diagnosis
First check the owner’s manual for your exact model and confirm it supports Smart Diagnosis. If it does, contact LG support and follow the representative’s instructions. In general, you will turn on the appliance, place the phone’s speaking end near the Smart Diagnosis marking, activate the diagnostic mode using the specified control, and keep the phone still until the tones finish.
The button and hold time are not universal. For example, an LG Korea washer procedure uses a five-second press of Water Temperature, while a dryer example uses Time Add for at least three seconds and waits for “End” on the display. Those are model- and market-specific examples, not instructions to apply to every LG machine. Use the control sequence in your manual or provided by support.

What it can—and cannot—do
SmartDiagnosis can help narrow down certain operational or mechanical issues. LG’s original announcement cited an off-balance washer as an example. A representative may suggest a simple corrective step, help determine whether a visit is warranted, or assist with preparing for a repair. LG’s U.S. support portfolio describes remote diagnosis as a way to explain simple fixes or dispatch an appropriate technician and part.
It is not a repair, a guarantee of the failed component, or a complete remote inspection. A tone session may not identify intermittent faults, installation problems, plumbing issues, or every electrical or mechanical failure. LG’s washer manual says results can be affected by mobile reception, external noise, and room acoustics, and that the feature assists rather than replaces traditional troubleshooting. A successful diagnosis may help avoid an unnecessary visit, but it cannot eliminate all service calls.
Rank #3
- ENERGY-EFFICIENT PERFORMANCE – ENERGY STAR certified laundry center designed to reduce electricity usage while delivering powerful washing and drying performance (annual energy consumption varies by usage and cycle selection).
- SPACE-SAVING LAUNDRY CENTER DESIGN – Integrated front-load washer and vented electric dryer stacked in a single 27-inch wide unit, ideal for apartments, closets, and compact laundry spaces.
- MAXIMUM DEPTH WITH DOOR OPEN – Measures 55 inches in depth with the washer door fully open, allowing proper clearance planning for installation.

- SMART WI-FI ENABLED CONTROLS – Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows remote monitoring, cycle control, and diagnostics through the LG ThinQ app for added convenience.
Phone tones versus ThinQ
SmartDiagnosis is a troubleshooting function; ThinQ is LG’s broader connected-appliance platform. Depending on model and region, an appliance may offer the phone-tone method, app-based troubleshooting, Wi-Fi alerts, or a combination. The acoustic phone process generally does not require Wi-Fi. App-connected features do require compatible hardware and a network connection, and not every product branded “smart” supports every Smart Diagnosis route. Check the exact model documentation and the LG U.S. laundry catalog rather than assuming features are interchangeable.
| Phone-tone diagnosis | ThinQ/app-connected support |
|---|---|
| Uses tones from the appliance relayed during a support call | Uses app and connected-appliance functions on compatible models |
| Typically does not require home Wi-Fi | Requires compatible Wi-Fi hardware and setup for connected functions |
| Usually involves a live support representative | May provide alerts or troubleshooting and can vary by model and region |
If the signal does not go through
- Confirm the model supports the feature and follow its manual’s activation sequence.
- Move to a quieter spot and make sure the phone has usable reception.
- Aim the phone’s speaking end at the marked area and keep it there until transmission ends.
- Avoid pressing other controls during the session; if you activate the wrong mode or interrupt the tones, restart with support’s guidance.
- If the appliance supports ThinQ, ask whether the app route is available for your model.
- If the result is inconclusive, arrange service rather than treating an uncertain signal as a confirmed diagnosis.
Do not use diagnosis as a reason to keep operating an unsafe appliance. Stop using it and seek professional help for smoke or burning smells, electrical arcing, gas odors, active leaks, severe movement, or destructive noises.

Why the feature mattered—and what to check when buying
When LG launched the system in 2010, its practical appeal was triage without an internet connection: support could gather diagnostic information over a phone call and potentially avoid some unnecessary visits. That made it an early example of machine-assisted customer support, but it should not be confused with a newly introduced AI conversation or remote-control system.

For a current purchase, treat SmartDiagnosis as a support convenience, not the main reason to choose a washer or dryer. Confirm the exact model’s diagnostic options, warranty and local service availability, then prioritize fit, capacity, installation requirements, and the features you will use. LG’s current product pages describe ThinQ and other smart capabilities as available on select appliances; branding alone does not establish compatibility.
Best Value
- Smart Heat Pump Dryer – Dual Inverter HeatPump technology for efficient, low‑energy drying and ventless installation flexibility.
- Compact but Capable – 4.2 cu ft. capacity in a 24″ compact footprint fits closets or smaller laundry spaces.
- 14 Dryer Programs – Multiple built‑in cycles and options for tailored drying results across fabric types.
- Sensor Dry Technology – Automatically adjusts drying time based on moisture for energy savings and fabric care.
- Wi‑Fi Smart Control – Control and monitor cycles remotely with LG ThinQ app; supports remote start and alerts.
For U.S. owners whose diagnosis points to a repair, LG provides Direct Service information. Support channels and hours can change, so use LG’s current contact page to find the applicable option. SmartDiagnosis can help make that conversation more informed, but the tones are a starting point—not a substitute for an on-site inspection when one is needed.
