Yes, Kohler launched a real toilet-mounted health tracker called Dekoda. But “camera in your toilet” is headline shorthand: Kohler describes the device as an optical-sensing system that uses spectroscopy-related analysis and machine learning to examine signals in the bowl. It is designed to track wellness trends such as gut health, hydration and possible blood presence—not to function as a bathroom security camera or diagnose disease.
What is Kohler Dekoda?
Dekoda is a compact device that attaches to the rim of a toilet with an adjustable clamp. Its sensors point downward into the bowl, where the system analyzes optical information associated with waste. The results are sent to the Kohler Health app, which presents scores, alerts and longer-term trends.
Kohler announced Dekoda and its Kohler Health business on October 15, 2025. The launch price was $599, with initial shipments scheduled for October 21, 2025. The product page remains available at Kohler’s health-products site.

Dekoda is intended for repeated, passive monitoring rather than a one-time test. It is battery-powered and rechargeable, and the quick-start guide says setup requires the Kohler Health app, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

In the intended workflow, a user authenticates with a fingerprint scan or through the app, uses the toilet normally, and then reviews the resulting information in the app. Authentication is meant to stop one household member’s data from being assigned to another person.
Is Dekoda really a camera?
The most accurate answer depends on what “camera” means.
- As a headline: calling it a toilet camera is understandable because the device looks into the bowl and captures optical information.
- As a physical description: it is an optical sensor system mounted on the toilet rim and aimed into the bowl.
- In Kohler’s terminology: it is a health tracker using optical sensors, spectroscopy-related analysis and machine-learning algorithms.
Kohler says the sensors are directed into the bowl and “nowhere else.” Public materials do not provide a complete hardware bill of materials, so it would be misleading to describe Dekoda as merely a temperature sensor, chemical sensor or conventional security camera. Media coverage has used the camera description; Kohler emphasizes health tracking and optical analysis. See TechCrunch’s coverage and MacRumors’ report for that distinction.
What does Dekoda claim to measure?
Gut-health patterns
Kohler says the system can provide insights into digestion and bathroom habits over time. That is trend monitoring, not a diagnosis of a gastrointestinal condition. A score or change in a trend should be treated as information to discuss with a healthcare professional, not as a clinical result.
Hydration
Dekoda is also marketed as a way to estimate hydration-related signals and encourage better hydration habits. The app may provide notifications or scores, but those should not be treated as a substitute for medical assessment, particularly for people with conditions that affect fluid intake.

Possible blood in the bowl
Kohler says Dekoda can alert users to the presence of blood in the toilet bowl. That is a potentially important prompt, but it is not a diagnosis of cancer, hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease or any other condition.
Blood can have several explanations, including menstruation, hemorrhoids, minor injury or other causes. A persistent or concerning alert should be discussed with a clinician. Conversely, the absence of an alert does not prove that a person is healthy or that disease is absent.

- Attach Dekoda to the toilet rim using its adjustable clamp.
- Authenticate by scanning a fingerprint or logging into the Kohler Health app.
- Use the bathroom normally.
- Allow the device to analyze the relevant optical signals.
- Review the resulting scores, alerts and trends in the app.
The quick-start guide says Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are required. That means a weak network, disabled Bluetooth, account issue or app failure could interfere with normal use.
What does Dekoda cost?
The $599 hardware price is only part of the cost. A membership is required to use Dekoda and the Kohler Health app.

These totals use the $599 launch price plus the reported annual membership rates. They exclude tax and shipping. The subscription figures were reported by MacRumors and should be confirmed on Kohler’s live checkout page before purchase, since prices and terms can change.

Warranty terms, returns, current stock, geographic availability and the current checkout price should likewise be checked directly with Kohler rather than inferred from the 2025 launch announcement.
Does it work with every toilet?
No. Kohler says the adjustable clamp is designed to fit most toilet bowls, not every toilet.
Before buying, check:
- the bowl shape and rim geometry;
- clearance around the seat and lid;
- whether a bidet seat or other accessory leaves enough room;
- whether the installation location allows comfortable fingerprint authentication;
- whether the device can be kept charged; and
- whether the bathroom has reliable Wi-Fi.
The public materials do not establish a complete compatibility list for every bowl design, skirted toilet or bidet installation. “Fits most” should not be read as universal compatibility.
What about the app and smartphone support?
The Kohler Health app is required. The current Apple App Store listing says “Only for iPhone.” However, Dekoda’s quick-start guide refers to downloading the app from the App Store or Google Play.
That is a meaningful documentation conflict. Do not assume Android support without confirming it with Kohler before purchasing.

The Apple listing also describes the service as general wellness software, not a product intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent diseases or conditions. It advises users to consult a healthcare professional before changing medication, nutrition or exercise.

A device collecting information from a toilet creates unusually intimate privacy concerns. Kohler promotes several protections:
- fingerprint authentication;
- end-to-end encryption;
- a sensor orientation aimed at the bowl rather than the wider bathroom; and
- user-specific access to health insights.
Those features may reduce some risks, but they do not answer every important data question. Encryption does not by itself explain who can process the information, how long it is retained, whether raw optical data is stored, or what happens when a membership ends.
Kohler’s general privacy policy explicitly excludes the Kohler Health business and directs readers to a separate Kohler Health privacy policy. That distinction matters: the general policy cannot, by itself, settle the privacy terms for Dekoda.

- Are raw images or other raw optical data stored?
- Is analysis performed locally, in the cloud or through both?
- Can Kohler employees or contractors access individual-level data?
- Is health data used to train machine-learning models?
- Is it sold, shared or used for advertising?
- Can users export or permanently delete their data?
- What happens to data after cancellation or if Kohler discontinues the product?
- Can one household member delete their data without deleting everyone’s?
- Does the fingerprint system store a biometric template, and where?
- What protections apply to children?
“End-to-end encrypted” should therefore be treated as a security claim to understand, not as proof that Kohler can never access or process the information.
Shared bathrooms create practical problems
Dekoda’s user-identification model works best when each person consistently authenticates. In a shared bathroom, that may not happen.
A household should consider guests, roommates, visitors and children. A guest may not realize that a toilet-mounted device is collecting health-related information. Someone may forget to authenticate, authenticate for the wrong person or use the bathroom without following the intended workflow. Fingerprint authentication reduces attribution errors; it does not eliminate them.

Everyone who may use the toilet should understand what the device does and agree to the arrangement.
Is Dekoda a medical device?
Based on Kohler’s app description, Dekoda is positioned as a general wellness product, not a medical diagnostic device. It should not replace medical care, laboratory testing, screening or urgent evaluation.
That limitation is especially important when interpreting a blood alert. The device may identify a signal that deserves attention, but it does not establish the cause. A negative result should not be used as reassurance that no illness exists, and a trend score should not be treated as a clinical diagnosis.
Who might consider it?
Dekoda may make sense for someone who:
- wants long-term bathroom-pattern information rather than occasional manual observation;
- is comfortable with a $599 device and an ongoing membership;
- has a private bathroom and a household willing to authenticate consistently;
- values passive tracking and habit feedback; and
- wants trend information to discuss with a healthcare professional.
Who should skip it?
It is probably a poor fit for someone who:
- does not want an optical sensor in the bathroom;
- expects a diagnostic test;
- objects to subscriptions or biometric authentication;
- has unreliable Wi-Fi or no confirmed supported smartphone;
- shares a bathroom where users will not authenticate reliably;
- needs clinically validated monitoring; or
- is uncomfortable with unresolved questions about data retention, cloud processing and future corporate use.
The bottom line
Kohler is not installing a hidden bathroom-surveillance camera. It is selling a toilet-mounted optical health tracker that examines signals in the bowl and presents wellness insights through an app.
The concept may be useful for longitudinal trend tracking, but the trade-off is substantial: a $599 launch price, a required subscription, smartphone and connectivity requirements, uncertain platform details, shared-household attribution problems and highly sensitive privacy questions. Dekoda is best approached as an experimental wellness product—not as a diagnostic device or a substitute for medical care.
