KeyMe Raised $50 Million in 2019 to Expand AI-Powered Key-Copying Kiosks

KeyMe announced $50 million in growth financing on April 10, 2019, to expand its self-service key-copying kiosks and develop additional services. Funds managed by BlackRock’s global credit team provided the financing. The announcement described growth financing; VentureBeat characterized it as debt financing, not a conventional priced equity round. KeyMe said it had raised more than $150 million in total at the time.

What the 2019 financing was for

KeyMe said it would use the capital to add kiosks and build out services around key duplication. The company was pursuing a retail-distribution model: place automated machines in stores so customers could make supported keys during a shopping trip, rather than visit a dedicated key-cutting counter. The announcement did not establish that the financing was an equity investment or disclose terms such as an interest rate or maturity date. How an AI-powered key kiosk works

Here, “AI” refers to a constrained industrial task, not a general-purpose machine. KeyMe described using computer vision and machine learning to read a key’s geometry and account for wear, then produce instructions for cutting a compatible blank.

1. The customer inserts or scans an available key.
2. The kiosk captures the key’s physical profile, including its cuts and dimensions.
3. Software analyzes that profile and apparent wear to determine a cut pattern and compatible blank.
4. For an eligible key, the kiosk cuts a duplicate on site. Other orders may be routed to mail fulfillment or a locksmith.

KeyMe has promoted its process as more accurate than conventional duplication, including historical accuracy claims reported in 2019 coverage. Those are company claims; the cited coverage does not provide an independent, current comparative benchmark. A successful scan also does not guarantee that every key can be copied or that every duplicate will work perfectly.

What “in seconds” means—and what it leaves out

VentureBeat reported KeyMe’s claim that a supported key could be duplicated in under 30 seconds. That refers to the kiosk cutting step for eligible keys, not necessarily the entire customer journey. Choosing a service, completing payment or checks, waiting for a mailed key, or arranging programming can add time.

• Standard residential and office keys: Many supported keys can be cut at a kiosk while the customer is there.
• RFID and access keys: A kiosk may scan a credential, but some copies are fulfilled and shipped rather than produced immediately.
• Vehicle keys: Cutting and electronic programming are separate needs. Some jobs require a locksmith or another fulfillment route.
• Online orders: A key ordered remotely must be made and delivered; the kiosk’s cutting speed does not determine delivery time.

In 2019, VentureBeat reported that mailed residential-key orders could take about three to five days. That is a historical estimate, not a current delivery-time promise. KeyMe’s current kiosk information distinguishes on-the-spot home and office copying from vehicle and RFID services that may involve shipping or a locksmith.

KeyMe’s scale in 2019

At the time of the financing announcement, KeyMe said it operated more than 2,300 kiosks across 46 states. Contemporary coverage listed retail placements with chains including 7-Eleven, Kroger, Rite Aid, Vons, Giant Eagle, and Kmart. The company also claimed broad vehicle- and RFID-key capability; VentureBeat reported support for more than 85% of automotive keys, a historical company claim rather than a guarantee for any particular vehicle.

Those figures describe KeyMe’s network and claims in 2019, not its present footprint. They help explain why the financing was framed around expansion: the company needed retail placements and service capacity as well as a machine capable of cutting keys.

What the kiosks can copy now

KeyMe’s current site advertises more than 100 key designs and says kiosks support many home, office, mailbox, padlock, and specialty keys. The company also offers vehicle, RFID, online-copying, and locksmith services, but those are not all kiosk transactions. Check the kiosk service information and locator for the specific key type and location.

Compatibility depends on the key profile and blank, local inventory, kiosk capability, and whether the key is restricted or electronic. A worn, bent, unusual, or controlled key may not be suitable for automatic duplication. “Many” supported keys is a more accurate expectation than “any key.”

Why the retail model matters

A kiosk puts a small, automated service inside an existing store rather than requiring a separate storefront or a staffed key-cutting counter. KeyMe says its retail proposition can operate without dedicated labor or inventory burdens for the host. That distribution model can make the service available where people already shop, while the company manages the equipment and fulfillment network. The economics for any retailer or customer depend on location, transaction volume, supported services, and operating arrangements; the funding announcement does not quantify them.

What changed by 2026

KeyMe’s company materials in 2026 describe a network of more than 8,000 kiosks and production of over 10 million keys annually. Its reported retail expansion includes Walmart, Meijer, Rural King, WinCo Foods, Staples, Kroger, 7-Eleven, and Albertsons; the company also announced a Sam’s Club partnership covering more than 600 locations in May 2026. KeyMe said it launched CopyKeys.com, an online key-duplication service, in July 2026. These are company-reported milestones, not independently audited operating metrics, and they do not show that the 2019 financing alone caused every later expansion. When a kiosk is—and is not—the right choice

A kiosk may fit

• You need a spare for a standard home, office, mailbox, or padlock key.
• You have the original key and a participating store with a kiosk nearby.
• The key is supported, and you can accept a non-instant fulfillment route if the service requires one.

Choose another service when

• The key is restricted, high-security, badly damaged, or not available to scan.
• You need a lockout response, rekeying, lock repair, or installation rather than a duplicate.
• A vehicle key needs programming or specialist work that the kiosk cannot perform.
• You need the copy immediately but the available option involves shipping.

A local locksmith is generally the relevant service for unusual keys, repairs, rekeying, or urgent on-site work. For vehicle keys, check the required programming and parts before choosing between a locksmith, dealer, or other provider. KeyMe says mobile-locksmith availability varies by geography, time, technician availability, and key type; it advises customers to verify a locksmith’s credentials and experience. Its locksmith information explains that service is distinct from kiosk copying.

Accuracy, privacy, and authorization

A duplicate can fail if the profile is unsupported, the wrong blank is selected, wear is not adequately accounted for, or the key is cut correctly but an electronic component is not programmed or compatible. KeyMe markets software designed to account for wear, but the available coverage does not establish a current independent error-rate comparison.

Digital key storage can make it easier to order a replacement without keeping the physical original nearby, but it also creates a sensitive record. Before storing or uploading a key image, consider who can access it, how it is protected and retained, and how it can be deleted. Do not copy a landlord’s, employer’s, condominium’s, or restricted facility’s key unless you are authorized to do so.

For locksmith work, confirm the total price, service fee, arrival estimate, and whether programming or replacement parts are included before dispatch. KeyMe advertises vehicle-key service at up to 70% below dealer prices, but that is a marketing claim, not a guaranteed saving; actual cost depends on the vehicle, location, key, and work required.
