The John Deere TANGO E5 is a genuine robotic lawnmower, but its “autonomous” operation is based on a prepared mowing area and boundary wire—not GPS mapping, cameras or AI. The Series II brochure lists a recommended area of up to 2,200 m², automatic charging and a 19–102 mm cutting-height range. Availability varies by market, so anyone considering a new or used unit should first confirm local dealer, parts and service support.
What is the John Deere TANGO E5?
The TANGO E5 is a residential robotic mower documented by John Deere. The Series II is identified in the company’s product literature, and John Deere also published an operator’s manual titled “Autonomous Mower Tango E5”. The brochure says the product is not available in all markets and recommends speaking with a dealer.
“Autonomous” here describes a mower that operates automatically within a prepared lawn area, follows a boundary-wire system and returns to its charging station. It does not mean a mower that maps the property by itself or recognizes every obstacle. Do not confuse the TANGO E5 with John Deere’s newer commercial autonomy work, which includes computer vision, AI and cameras; those capabilities are not established for this consumer mower.

These are manufacturer figures for the Series II literature, not guarantees for every lawn or every regional configuration. In particular, 2,200 m² is a recommended area, not a promise that all properties of that size will be mown reliably. The brochure’s 36% slope figure is explicitly conditional on terrain and layout. How its autonomous mowing works
Expect a conventional wire-guided robotic-mower setup:
- Prepare the mowing area and position a charging station where the mower can access it reliably and power is available.
- Install boundary wire around the mowing zone, with additional planning for obstacles or areas the mower must avoid.
- Set the mower’s operating program using the controls available on the specific unit.
- The mower cuts automatically within the prepared boundary, returns to the dock to charge and operates according to its programmed rules.
Boundary placement and dock access matter. Narrow bottlenecks, separate lawn sections, beds, ponds, driveways, retaining edges and other hazards can complicate installation. Exact wire spacing, connections and terminal procedures can depend on the model and market; use the correct manual rather than an installation diagram for a different version.

Wire faults or poor connections can cause boundary errors, prevent the mower leaving its dock or lead to erratic operation. Landscaping work can also damage a buried wire. If the mower stops recognizing its perimeter, consult the applicable manual and dealer before changing wiring or connections.

Does it fit your lawn?
Assess the mowable grass area and shape, not just the size of the property. The TANGO E5 is a more plausible fit for one principal lawn with clear edges, few narrow passages and a suitable place for its dock. A fragmented garden, tight corridors, frequent temporary obstacles or hazardous drops can make wire installation and dependable operation more difficult.

- Slopes: The up-to-36% claim is not universal. Wet or slippery grass, uneven ground, tire condition and travel direction can affect traction.
- Long grass: A robot mower is intended for routine maintenance. If the lawn has become overgrown, cut it down with a conventional mower first.
- Wet conditions: An independent test records no rain sensor on the tested Series II configuration. Do not assume it will automatically avoid rain; follow the relevant manual’s rules for wet grass, water and cleaning.
- Edges: Wire-guided robots may leave strips beside walls, gravel or raised borders, so occasional manual edging may still be needed.
- Obstacles: Do not rely on the mower to identify toys, branches, hoses, pets or people. Prepare the lawn and keep people and animals clear while it is operating.
Controls and features: verify the exact version
A Danish consumer test of the TANGO E5 Series II records automatic programming and security-code functionality, but no mobile app, rain sensor or remote control. Those findings apply to the configuration tested; regional variations may differ. The reviewed documentation does not establish Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS theft tracking, cloud scheduling, smartphone notifications, virtual boundaries or camera-based obstacle recognition. If any of these features is essential, ask a dealer to confirm them for the exact model and market before buying. Read the independent test details.
Maintenance, safety and troubleshooting
Routine ownership involves keeping the chassis and blade area clear of grass, inspecting and replacing blades as needed, checking the boundary system and dock, and following the correct instructions for battery care and seasonal storage. The available sources do not establish a universal blade or battery replacement interval; use the applicable manual or ask a dealer. John Deere’s brochure points buyers to dealers for advice, servicing and parts.

Automatic operation is not a safety guarantee. Keep children and pets away while the mower is operating, remove toys, branches, stones and hoses, and never lift, clean or inspect the underside while it is active. Take particular care near water, roads, retaining walls, public access and steep edges. Follow the market-specific operator’s manual for servicing, cleaning and storage.

Availability and price in 2026
John Deere’s brochure identifies the TANGO E5 Series II but says it is not offered in every market. The reviewed sources do not establish a current US retail listing or MSRP, and absence from a US product page alone does not prove that the model has been discontinued. Check with a local John Deere dealer about availability, warranty, installation, battery and parts support before making a purchase. Start with John Deere’s dealer and support portal or its configuration portal.

A Danish consumer test listed a price of 18,700 DKK for the tested Series II in March 2017. That is historical context only, not a current price or a sound basis for comparing it with 2026 products. Ownership cost can also include the dock, wire and installation materials, setup, replacement blades, battery service, dealer troubleshooting and—if importing—a check on compatibility, warranty and local parts support.
Buying a used TANGO E5
A used unit may be worthwhile only if its condition and local support are clear. Before paying, verify:
- The exact model and whether it is Series II; controls and equipment can vary by market.
- Battery condition and whether replacement batteries are locally available.
- That the mower, charging station, charger and boundary-wire system all work.
- That the security-code situation is understood and the seller can demonstrate operation.
- Which wire, pegs, connectors, blades and other installation parts are included.
- Whether a dealer will service that model and whether warranty coverage applies.
- That it can leave the dock, mow, return to charge and resume as expected.
Pay special attention to the charging dock and battery: a mower that powers on briefly may still have too little battery capacity for useful operation. If the seller cannot demonstrate a complete cycle, price the uncertainty accordingly and ask a dealer about inspection before purchase.

Consider it if your lawn suits boundary-wire mowing, you are comfortable with relatively basic controls, and a nearby dealer can confirm parts and service. Look at other options if you require app control, remote alerts, GPS or virtual mapping, camera-assisted navigation, or dependable operation across a complicated multi-zone garden. The 2017 independent test compared the TANGO E5 with product families including Husqvarna Automower, Gardena smart SILENO, STIGA Autoclip, McCulloch ROB, Robomow, Ambrogio and AL-KO Robolinho; those names are useful historical context, not a current model or price comparison.
