Jackery’s Solar Roof uses curved XBC photovoltaic tiles designed to look more like conventional roofing than raised rectangular panels. The company announced the obsidian and terra-cotta tiles at CES 2025, claiming more than 25% cell-conversion efficiency, output of up to 170 watts per square meter, and a 30-year warranty. But the important homeowner caveat is this: Jackery’s current buying process is consultation-led, with no published standard price or ordinary online checkout. And attractive tiles may improve an HOA application without guaranteeing approval.

What Jackery actually announced

Jackery introduced its Solar Roof at CES 2025 as a roof-integrated photovoltaic system built around XBC curved solar tiles. The tiles are available in—or were announced in—two visual treatments: dark obsidian and terra-cotta, the latter intended to blend with clay-style roofing.

Jackery described the product as the first curved solar tile available in the United States, a claim that should be treated as the company’s positioning rather than an independently verified industry-wide finding. The system is aimed at homeowners and potentially architecturally sensitive projects where conventional rack-mounted panels would be too visually prominent.

Jackery also presents the roof as part of a wider home-energy system that can include its HomePower inverter and battery products, a HomePower Energy System, a Solar Generator 5000 Plus, and a Smart Transfer Switch Kit. Those components matter because the visible roof is only one part of a permitted solar installation.

Published specifications, in plain English

Specification Published information What it does—and does not—tell you
Cell efficiency More than 25% A company-claimed cell-conversion figure, not the efficiency of the finished roof.
Power density Up to 170 W/m² Useful for estimating physical coverage, but not an annual production forecast.
Individual tile output 38 W A rated tile output reported by pv magazine.
Colors Obsidian and terra-cotta More colors were suggested for the future, but availability must be confirmed.
Temperature range −40°F to 185°F A company claim; it is not a substitute for local code and climate documentation.
Weather resistance Hail and high winds Ask for the specific hail test, wind rating, and applicable standards.
Warranty 30 years Confirm degradation coverage, exclusions, labor, roof-leak coverage, and transferability.
Installation Modular, roof-integrated installation “Modular” does not mean DIY or explain the complete roof assembly.

The reported 25%+ figure is especially easy to misread. It describes cell-conversion efficiency, not the percentage of sunlight that becomes usable electricity at the household meter. Finished output is affected by usable roof area, pitch, azimuth, shading, temperature, ventilation, tile spacing, non-generating roof sections, wiring, inverter losses, and utility limits.

For a real comparison, request a location-specific annual kilowatt-hour model and compare it with conventional panels and other integrated systems. Do not compare products solely by their headline cell-efficiency percentage.

Why the tiles could help with HOA objections

Standard solar panels are typically recognizable as black or blue rectangular modules mounted above the roof plane, with rails, flashing, wiring, and sometimes skirts visible from the street. Jackery’s curved geometry and terra-cotta option are intended to make the roof look more like a normal roof covering.

That could help an architectural committee evaluate a proposal. A consistent, low-profile roof treatment may be less controversial than a visible array of panels and mounting hardware. Terra-cotta tiles could be particularly relevant to Mediterranean, Spanish, or clay-tile-inspired homes, while obsidian may blend more readily with dark roofing.

But “HOA-friendly” is an aesthetic possibility, not a legal status. An HOA may still consider:

  • Whether the roof is visible from the street or neighboring properties.
  • Color mismatch, reflectivity, glare, or changes to the roofline.
  • Historic or architectural character.
  • Installer credentials and construction quality.
  • The location of batteries, inverters, disconnects, transfer switches, conduit, and other visible equipment.
  • Whether the installation replaces the entire roof and matches approved materials.
  • Whether the committee has enough engineering, appearance, and warranty documentation to review a new product.

The U.S. Department of Energy explains that HOA rules and solar-access protections vary by state. A state may limit an association’s ability to prohibit solar while still allowing reasonable regulation of placement or design. Check the declaration, architectural guidelines, state law, local rules, and the exact requirements for your property.

Can an HOA still reject Jackery’s solar roof?

Yes—whether it can do so lawfully depends on the property’s governing documents and the law where the home is located.

Separate these questions:

  1. Can the HOA prohibit solar entirely? In many jurisdictions, state solar-access protections restrict that power, but the details vary.
  2. Can the HOA regulate appearance or placement? Often yes, subject to applicable limits and standards.
  3. Will this specific Jackery design be approved? No one can answer that without the roof plan, visibility, equipment layout, documents, and local rules.

A stronger application should include product photographs and color samples, roof plans and elevations showing street visibility, a tile layout, the installer’s credentials, structural and electrical plans, equipment locations, warranty information, and evidence of code compliance. Explain how the proposal preserves the property’s architectural character, but do not describe the system as HOA-approved unless the association has actually approved it.

Is Jackery’s Solar Roof available, and what does it cost?

As of August 2026, Jackery’s public pages do not provide a standard retail price, published package, or normal online checkout for the curved tiles. The current Solar Roof page describes a process involving remote site assessment, custom system design, AI visualization, professional installation through certified local installers, and ongoing support. Its consumer contact form asks for roof area, address, building type, and project details.

That means the practical buying route is a project-specific consultation—not ordering individual tiles from a store. The public information does not establish nationwide installation coverage, a standard delivery timetable, or a complete installed-system price. Earlier CES reporting also found no firm price or availability date; Engadget’s coverage is useful context.

Before treating a quote as actionable, ask Jackery or its installer to identify the local installer, confirm regional availability, provide a delivery date, and break out roofing, solar, electrical, permitting, storage, and service costs.

Is it a complete roof or only the solar-producing section?

The reviewed public material does not establish exactly how photovoltaic tiles are combined with non-generating roofing components. That distinction can materially change the project cost and appearance.

A complete solar-roof assembly may involve generating tiles, matching non-generating tiles, ridge and hip pieces, valleys, edges, flashing, underlayment, water-management layers, inverters, wiring, disconnects, and possibly batteries. Ask:

  • Are matching non-generating tiles available?
  • Does the system require a complete roof replacement?
  • Can it cover only part of a roof?
  • Which roof pitches, shapes, and materials are supported?
  • How are skylights, chimneys, vents, dormers, valleys, and roof edges handled?
  • Can one damaged tile be replaced without disturbing adjacent tiles?
  • Who handles leaks, roof repairs, and electrical faults?
  • What is the documented degradation rate?
  • Which certifications and listings apply?
  • What is the maximum system size, and can it use third-party batteries or inverters?

Jackery versus conventional panels and other solar roofs

Option Main advantage Main drawback Best fit
Jackery curved Solar Roof Conventional-roof appearance with curved obsidian or terra-cotta tiles. Public price, regional availability, roof-assembly details, and service history remain limited. A homeowner prioritizing appearance and willing to pursue a custom project.
Rack-mounted panels Broad installer availability, mature workflows, transparent system-sizing practices, and easier component replacement. More visually prominent and potentially harder to approve on appearance-sensitive properties. A homeowner with a sound roof who prioritizes economics and serviceability.
GAF Timberline Solar Roof-integrated solar shingles paired with conventional Timberline shingles as part of a roofing system. Installer availability and pricing are still location- and roof-specific; compatibility depends on the roof. A homeowner replacing an asphalt-shingle roof who wants an integrated roofing system.

GAF’s Timberline Solar information describes a roofing-focused system using energy-producing and conventional shingles. It is not a direct technical equivalent to Jackery’s curved tiles, but it is a relevant alternative for buyers comparing integrated roofs.

The biggest trade-offs

Appearance versus economics

An integrated roof may solve an architectural objection, but it can cost more per installed watt than ordinary panels. If the existing roof is new and sound, replacing it solely to add solar may be difficult to justify financially. If the roof already needs replacement, the comparison becomes more favorable because roofing is part of either project.

Modularity versus service complexity

Small tiles could allow localized replacement, but they also create more electrical connections and roofing interfaces. “Modular” does not by itself prove that repairs will be quick or inexpensive. The manufacturer’s replacement procedure, labor policy, and long-term tile supply matter more than the label.

Efficiency versus usable roof area

High cell efficiency can help when roof space is limited. It cannot overcome heavy shade, poor orientation, or a roof layout with many non-generating sections. A conventional array may produce more electricity for less money when aesthetics are not the constraint.

Integrated roof versus future maintenance

With rack-mounted panels, a roofing contractor can usually plan around a separate array, which may be removed or worked around during repairs. An integrated solar roof combines the water-shedding roof system and the electrical-generation system, potentially requiring more specialized service.

Permits, installation, and equipment beyond the tiles

A solar roof is a construction and electrical project, not a consumer-electronics purchase. A typical project may involve:

  1. Roof inspection and structural assessment.
  2. System design and production modeling.
  3. HOA or architectural review, if applicable.
  4. Building and electrical permits.
  5. Utility interconnection approval.
  6. Roof and electrical installation.
  7. Inspection.
  8. Utility permission to operate or final connection.

The DOE’s permitting and inspection guide notes that local governments generally require permits and post-installation inspection, with requirements and fees varying by jurisdiction.

Do not assume that a general roofer can install the electrical system or that an electrician can independently install the roof assembly. The project may require coordinated roofing, electrical, structural, permitting, and utility expertise. If backup power is part of the plan, the roof alone will not keep the home powered during an outage; suitable storage and islanding equipment are required.

Homeowner checklist before signing

  1. Roof condition: Is a full replacement required, and what is the remaining life of the existing roof?
  2. Production: What annual kilowatt-hour estimate is modeled for your address, including shade and roof orientation?
  3. Coverage: Which areas use generating tiles, and which use matching non-generating materials?
  4. Documentation: Can the installer provide fire, wind, hail, electrical, and roof-assembly certifications?
  5. Warranty: What does the 30-year warranty cover, and does it include degradation, labor, leaks, removal, reinstallation, and transfer to a future buyer?
  6. Repairs: How quickly can damaged tiles and proprietary components be supplied?
  7. Equipment: Where will the inverter, battery, disconnects, transfer switch, conduit, and meters be located?
  8. Availability: Who is the local installer, when can work begin, and what happens if delivery slips?
  9. Permitting: Who obtains building and electrical permits and handles utility interconnection?
  10. HOA: Will the contractor prepare drawings, samples, and technical documents for architectural review?
  11. Alternatives: What is the installed cost and modeled output of conventional panels and another integrated solar-roof system?
  12. Incentives: Which current federal, state, local, and utility incentives actually apply to this installation date and equipment?

Who should consider it?

Potentially good fit: A homeowner replacing a roof, placing a high value on appearance, living in a design-sensitive neighborhood, and willing to obtain a custom quote and verify service coverage.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potentially poor fit: A homeowner with a newer roof, a tight budget, heavy shading, an urgent need for a readily purchasable system, or a preference for commodity components that any qualified installer can replace.

New construction may be especially suitable because the roof, electrical design, permits, and equipment locations can be coordinated from the outset. Historic districts, condominiums, townhomes, coastal areas, wildfire-prone regions, and snow or hail regions require extra documentation and approval checks.

Verdict

Jackery’s curved Solar Roof is a real announced and currently marketed solar-roof system, and its conventional-looking design could make an HOA conversation easier. It does not make HOA approval automatic, and the headline efficiency and warranty claims do not answer the questions that determine whether the project is a good investment.

As of August 2026, the bigger uncertainty is practical: public pricing, regional availability, installer coverage, complete roof-assembly details, repair procedures, certifications, degradation terms, and labor coverage are not clearly published in the reviewed material. Treat Jackery as a custom consultation opportunity, not a standard retail tile purchase. Get a written quote and compare it with conventional panels and an established integrated solar roof before committing.
