Not literally. The X1 Pro is a 700 W, Class 4 fiber-laser machine designed to weld, cut and clean metal. Presets and a touchscreen may help a beginner get started quickly, but they do not remove the need to prepare the joint, tune settings, use shielding gas and filler wire where required, and follow strict laser-safety procedures. “If you can hot glue, you can laser weld,” as Hacksmith Industries put it in a statement quoted by New Atlas, is a description of the approachable workflow—not a promise of effortless or professional-quality welds.
What does “as easy as a hot glue gun” really mean?
The comparison is about how the operator handles the gun, not about the hazards or skill involved. New Atlas described the X1 Pro as “extremely portable and beginner-friendly” in a March 8, 2025 feature, and said it is designed to let beginners start laying beads on thin material. The touchscreen and preset parameters give users a guided starting point, rather than requiring them to set every parameter from scratch.
A preset is not a guarantee of a sound joint. Results still depend on the metal alloy and thickness, joint fit and geometry, surface condition, travel speed, shielding gas, filler wire and technique. Expect to learn by setting up carefully and practicing on suitable scrap—not by assuming the first bead will be ready for a structural or finished construction job.

New Atlas also says laser welding produces less heat than MIG in its account, reducing the risk of warping. That may be useful on thin work, but it does not mean the process is distortion-free or that a weld is fit for a load-bearing application without appropriate inspection and qualification.

What can the X1 Pro weld, and how thick?
RyanPhotonics specifies a welding thickness range of 0.5–3 mm and a welding speed of 0–120 mm/s. These are published machine specifications, not a guarantee that every joint, alloy or position can be welded successfully at the maximum thickness. Xlaserlab describes the machine as a 3-in-1 system for welding, cutting and cleaning; its product page lists 0.5–3 mm processing thickness, which is broader wording than a welding-only rating.
RyanPhotonics lists stainless steel, carbon steel, iron, galvanized sheet, aluminum, brass, copper, zinc alloy and other metals as supported materials. The exact workable combination depends on the joint and setup. The X1 Pro supports continuous-wave and pulsed output, but those modes do not eliminate the need to adjust for the material and job.

For cutting, RyanPhotonics recommends a cutting-gas flow of 15–20 L/min. That figure applies to the listed cutting recommendation, not welding generally. Its specification page recommends nitrogen or argon for the machine; select shielding gas and process settings for the specific material and operation.

The power, thickness, speed and weight figures are from RyanPhotonics’ specification page. The Pro is the heavier choice with greater listed welding capacity; the smaller X1 is lighter. Choose based on the work you actually expect to do and whether cutting and cleaning matter—not on the maximum thickness alone.

What comes with the machine, and what must you supply?
Package contents vary by listing or kit. Xlaserlab and RyanPhotonics package descriptions include the X1 Pro unit, welding gun, wire feeder, gun holder, power and signal cables, gas adapter and hose, focusing and protective lenses, emergency stop, helmet, safety goggles, apron, safety clip and nozzle accessories. Confirm the exact contents of the specific kit before ordering; a listed accessory should not be assumed to be included in every regional bundle.
Shielding gas and filler wire are separate purchases, according to the product FAQ. RyanPhotonics identifies welding wire, protective lenses and contact copper nozzles as consumables, so include replacements in the operating budget. The included gas hardware does not mean the gas itself is supplied.

What do you need to prepare before the first weld?
- Read the machine instructions and setup guidance. Xlaserlab’s support center provides manual, unboxing and installation material, parameter guidance, focus adjustment, lens replacement, emergency-stop, cutting, cleaning and wire-feed troubleshooting tutorials.
- Set up the work area and safety controls. Xlaserlab identifies the machine as Class 4. Treat it as an industrial laser, not as a handheld hobby tool: follow the manufacturer’s safety procedures, control access to the work area, and use the specified protective equipment. Verify that eyewear is appropriate for the laser system; ordinary welding glasses are not a substitute for laser-rated protection.
- Check power and gas availability. RyanPhotonics lists 100–240 V AC input, while Xlaserlab’s page lists 100–250 V input. Because the published ranges differ, check the manual and the label on the exact unit, then confirm that your shop supply is suitable. Arrange nitrogen or argon and the relevant gas hardware before welding; the gas is not included.
- Prepare material and consumables. Obtain compatible filler wire if the joint requires it, and check the protective lens and contact copper nozzle. Prepare clean, well-fitted test pieces of the same material and thickness as the intended work.
- Start with the official parameter guidance and test carefully. Use the supplied guidance as a starting point, then evaluate the bead on scrap before moving to a finished piece. Change settings to suit alloy, thickness, joint geometry and travel speed rather than assuming one preset suits every job.
Is it easy to operate safely?
No machine in this class should be treated like a glue gun from a safety standpoint. Xlaserlab identifies the X1 Pro as Class 4, and the kit descriptions list protective equipment. The support center’s emergency-stop and protective-lens procedures are useful parts of setup and maintenance, but having a helmet and goggles in a package does not by itself establish that the work area or protection is suitable for every installation.
Before powering on, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for protective equipment, access control, operation and emergency stop. If you cannot verify that your workspace and protection meet the machine’s requirements, do not operate it there. For safety-critical construction work, ease of making a bead is not evidence that the joint is correctly designed, adequately penetrated or acceptable for its intended load.

Is the X1 Pro worth the price for a garage or small shop?
The U.S. Xlaserlab product page displayed $3,499.99, reduced from $3,999.99, when checked; the check date is not stated, and regional listings or promotions may differ. Treat those amounts as a listing snapshot, not a current quote. The purchase makes most sense if you will regularly use its combination of welding, cutting and cleaning and can support the safety, gas and consumable requirements.
For occasional repairs, a lower-cost process or outsourcing may be more sensible than buying a Class 4 machine and setting up a suitable work area. For a small shop, compare the total cost and workflow—not only the machine price.
