Usually—in typical U.S. building wiring, green or green with yellow stripes identifies the equipment grounding conductor, and bare copper may serve the same purpose. But color is not proof that a wire is correctly connected, de-energized, or safe to touch. Treat the color as a clue, not a safety test.

What a green wire is supposed to do

An equipment grounding conductor (often called an equipment ground) connects exposed, non-current-carrying metal—such as an appliance chassis, metal box, or receptacle yoke—to the grounding and bonding path. In ordinary operation it should not carry the load current. If a hot conductor contacts the metal, the grounding path is intended to carry fault current so a protective device can disconnect power.

OSHA training material identifies equipment grounding conductors as green, green with one or more yellow stripes, or bare; it identifies the branch-circuit grounded conductor as continuously white or natural gray. OSHA electrical safety training material gives these common U.S. identifications. Applicable rules and exceptions depend on the installation, equipment standard, and jurisdiction; local authorities may adopt different National Electrical Code editions.

A grounding conductor can be present but loose, interrupted, damaged, incorrectly connected, or unsuitable for the application. A green wire can also be energized by a fault or improper wiring. Never handle a conductor based on color alone.

Ground, neutral, and earth are different things

  • Ungrounded (hot) conductor: carries supply voltage to a load. Black and red are common colors in U.S. residential wiring, but not a complete or universal color code.
  • Grounded conductor: usually the neutral in ordinary U.S. circuits. It is intentionally connected to ground at a designated system bonding point and normally carries return current.
  • Equipment grounding conductor: usually green, green/yellow, or bare in typical U.S. building wiring. It bonds exposed metal into a fault-current path and should not be used as a neutral or hot conductor.
  • Grounding electrode conductor and electrode: the conductor connects the system to the grounding electrode system; an electrode may be a ground rod, building steel, or another qualifying element. These are not simply interchangeable with the green wire in a branch-circuit cable.

Grounding and bonding are related but not synonymous: bonding joins conductive parts so they remain at substantially the same potential and provides a low-impedance fault path. A ground rod alone is not a substitute for a properly installed equipment grounding and bonding path. OSHA terminology is described in 29 CFR 1910.399, and construction grounding concepts are summarized in OSHA’s construction grounding guidance.

Common U.S. wire colors—and what they do not prove

Color or appearance Typical U.S. identification Qualification
Green Equipment grounding conductor Intended for grounding in ordinary applications; verify connections and condition.
Green with yellow stripe(s) Equipment grounding conductor Protective-earth identification; exact application may depend on the governing code or equipment standard.
Bare copper or, where permitted, bare aluminum May serve as equipment grounding conductor Bare does not mean safe to touch or properly connected.
White or natural gray Usually grounded conductor, commonly called neutral May be subject to limited permitted reidentification; do not assume it is de-energized.
Black Common ungrounded (hot) conductor Common convention, not the only possible hot-conductor identification.
Red Often another ungrounded conductor in 120/240-volt systems Common convention; function depends on the circuit.
Blue, brown, orange, yellow, purple, or other colors May identify ungrounded, phase, control, or signal conductors Meaning varies by system, equipment, and jurisdiction; consult the diagram and qualified documentation.

OSHA requires grounded and equipment grounding conductors to be identifiable and distinguishable, but that does not create one universal color for every ungrounded conductor. See 29 CFR 1910.304 and the construction requirements in 29 CFR 1926.405. The familiar black-hot, white-neutral, green-ground shorthand is a starting point for typical residential wiring, not a complete code chart for commercial, industrial, control, solar, generator, marine, automotive, or imported equipment.

Why a green wire may not be a safe ground

  • Miswiring: It may be attached to the wrong terminal, left disconnected, or improperly joined elsewhere.
  • Open ground: A green or bare conductor may be visible in the box yet fail to connect through the wiring method to the equipment grounding path.
  • Bootleg ground: Someone may have improperly connected neutral and ground at a receptacle. A basic plug-in tester may not reveal every such defect or prove a proper fault-current path.
  • Damage or poor connections: Corrosion, loose terminals, breaks, or unsuitable conductor size can undermine protection.
  • Multiple circuits or another source: A box can contain conductors from multiple circuits, shared-neutral wiring, or a backfeed. Turning off one expected breaker may not make every conductor dead.
  • Legacy or altered wiring: Older buildings may have ungrounded two-wire cable, knob-and-tube wiring, metal raceways, or later alterations that do not match modern expectations.
  • Induced voltage: A non-contact voltage detector can respond to nearby energized wiring or induced voltage; it is a screening tool, not conclusive proof either way.
  • Different application: Low-voltage, communications, signaling, and machine-control wiring may follow other rules or exceptions. NFPA material discusses limited exceptions for certain power-limited and communications circuits: NEC-related NFPA material.

NFPA material on industrial machinery likewise identifies equipment grounding conductors as green or green with yellow stripes, subject to stated exceptions: NFPA 79 material. That identification does not make color a substitute for a diagram, measurements, or inspection.

Can the green wire carry electricity?

It should not carry a circuit’s normal load current in ordinary operation, but it can carry substantial current during a fault. Improper neutral-to-ground connections can also put normal return current onto grounding paths. Leakage, filtering components, static discharge, induced voltage, or equipment faults may produce measurable voltage or current. “Normally not a current-carrying conductor” does not mean safe to touch.

How to verify safely

Electrical testing is hazardous, and a color chart cannot make exposed wiring safe. OSHA’s electrical requirements address conductor identification and grounding; its construction guidance also describes testing programs for certain cord sets, receptacles, and cord-connected equipment: OSHA electrical hazards and assured equipment grounding conductor program.

  1. Do not touch exposed conductors. Identify the circuit and switch off the relevant breaker or disconnect; do not rely solely on the panel label.
  2. Prevent someone from restoring power while work is underway. Remember that another circuit, shared neutral, or alternate source may still be present.
  3. Use a properly rated tester suited to the circuit, with intact leads and the correct settings. Confirm it works on a known live source before testing.
  4. Test the relevant conductors and nearby metalwork using a method appropriate to the system. Confirm the tester still works on the known live source afterward.
  5. If you cannot confidently identify the circuit, choose and use the tester correctly, or interpret the result, stop and call a qualified electrician.

A non-contact voltage pen should not be the sole check before handling conductors. Do not use your body, a screwdriver, or an improvised lamp as a tester; do not touch green to hot to see what happens; and do not join neutral and ground at a downstream outlet or subpanel. Do not remove a grounding conductor because equipment appears to work without it.

What each tester can and cannot tell you

Tool Useful for Cannot establish by itself
Non-contact voltage tester Quick initial indication of nearby AC voltage. De-energization in every condition, continuity, polarity, or grounding quality.
Plug-in receptacle tester Checking common wiring patterns at standard North American receptacles; some models indicate open ground, open neutral, open hot, and polarity faults. The quality of the complete grounding path, every possible defect, or safety of hardwired equipment.
Two-pole voltage tester Checking voltage between selected conductors when used correctly. Complete installation compliance or grounding integrity.
Multimeter Measuring voltage and, on an isolated circuit, resistance or continuity when correctly configured. Safe diagnosis if the meter is misconfigured or used beyond the operator’s competence.
Qualified electrician Diagnosing complex, damaged, old, or inconsistent wiring and correcting it appropriately. Not applicable; professional assessment is the alternative when the situation exceeds basic identification.

For example, Klein says its NCVT1PKIT combines a non-contact tester and a receptacle tester that identifies common faults; that capability does not certify an entire grounding system. Klein lists the 69149P kit multimeter as measuring up to 600 V AC/DC, 10 A DC, and 2 MΩ resistance. Southwire’s 10037K catalog listing specifies a 90–1,000 V AC non-contact detector and CAT III 300 V for the multimeter. Specifications describe tools, not permission to work beyond your training.

When to stop and call an electrician

  • The wire color conflicts with its measured behavior or the equipment diagram.
  • A conductor remains energized after the expected breaker is off, or you find multiple circuits, shared neutrals, or an unknown supply.
  • You are working at a service panel, meter, generator, inverter, solar system, transfer switch, or high-voltage or three-phase equipment.
  • The installation has aluminum branch wiring, knob-and-tube wiring, ungrounded two-slot receptacles, damaged insulation, or signs of heat or corrosion.
  • The work is outdoors, in a wet location, or involves industrial machinery or unfamiliar control wiring.
  • You cannot confirm the grounding path or safely interpret your test results.

What changes outside typical U.S. building wiring?

Wire colors differ internationally and across equipment standards. In many IEC-influenced systems, green/yellow is protective earth, blue is commonly neutral, and brown, black, or gray may identify line conductors. Older installations and local rules can differ. Do not apply a U.S. color chart in another country without checking the electrical standard adopted there. The same caution applies to automotive, marine, recreational-vehicle, low-voltage, and imported equipment.
